The results of the Original Miami Beach Antique Show, January 30 – February 3, 2014

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday. There will be no Thursday post this week because this post was published on Tuesday.

There was a good crowd on line at the opening on Thursday

The Original Miami Beach Antique Show ended yesterday, after a five-day run from January 30 – February 3, 2014. Opening day attendance was up 20% over last year and overall attendance improved.

Personally our show was mediocre, compared to last year. We sold plenty of items, but the average selling price was down, resulting in lower gross sales. Of all of our categories, French glass sold best.

In asking around, I got the following comments from dealers. “Much better than last year” from a southern dealer in general antiques; “As good or better than last year” from a dealer in Asian antiques; “I’m very pleased” from a dealer specializing in Austrian Art Nouveau and Deco; from a dealer in 19th Century decorative arts “7 on a 1-10 scale, but happy with what we did”; from a California decorative arts dealer, “Business was brisk, but off 20% from last year. It’s still twice as good as any California show.”; a perfume bottle and Art Deco dealer commented “Just OK. I’m seriously thinking of not coming back next year.”; from a dealer in painted lamps “OK. Not a bang-up show”; “Not over the top, but OK” was the comment from a dealer in minerals and Lalique glass; “I had a good show, better than last year” from a dealer in silver; and finally “Better than last year” from an Argentine decorative arts dealer.

Next year’s show will start on a Saturday and run through Wednesday. Not sure why, but that’s what’s planned as of now. The show will close at 10 PM on opening day, instead of the usual 8 PM, to give religious Jewish vendors a chance to sell on Saturday after the Sabbath ends. The new days and hours will be strange, but I don’t think they will hurt business. The following year, 2016, the show returns to the normal Thursday opening.

We’re off to the Naples area for a few days of R&R before we get to Palm Beach for the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show, starting on February 15. While we’re in Naples, we’ll check out the Naples Art, Antique and Jewelry Show. If we like what we see, we’ll exhibit there next year. We’ll end our southern swing with the wonderful Grove Park Inn Arts & Crafts Conference, February 21 – 23, 2014. We last exhibited there a few years ago but couldn’t exhibit again because of scheduling conflicts. This year there were no conflicts, so we’re happy to return.

Setting up at the Original Miami Beach Antique Show, January 28-29, 2014

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday. Tune in next Tuesday for the results of the Original Miami Beach Antique Show. There will be no Monday blog because the show ends on Monday.

This huge boom barely fits down the aisle

This huge boom barely fits down the aisle

I wish I could say set-up was uneventful, but unfortunately it wasn’t. A dealer in my aisle needed a chandelier hung when setup for the show was almost complete. To accomplish that, EXPO, the company responsible for everything physical at the show, decided to move their gigantic boom down our aisle. In the process, they hit my Tiffany glass case with their tire and broke a vase worth at least $2,500. It could have been much worse. What I don’t understand it why they would accommodate such a request so late in the set-up. They could have broken hundreds of thousands of dollars of merchandise in the attempt. Makes no sense to me. Now I have to deal with an insurance claim. Ugh!! I’m lucky my neighbor across the aisle recorded the entire event, so EXPO can’t deny they were the cause of the damage.

I just purchased this beautiful Tiffany Favrile vase with applications the day before

To make things worse, the management did not turn on the air conditioning for the entire set-up. It was dreadfully hot and humid in the hall, with many people sweating bullets. I know this may fall on deaf ears to those experiencing -5°, but it wasn’t pleasant.

It may look disorganized, but it will look great when the show opens

The show opens today at noon and continues until Monday at 6 PM. I always look forward to it as one of the two best and most important shows of the year. I’ve got a lot riding on the results, so I’m going into the show with butterflies in my stomach. Wish me luck!

The Miami National Antiques Show begins this Friday, January 24, 2014

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday. This Thursday’s blog will be from Miami, after we’ve finished setting up the show.

It’s hard to believe, but the Miami shows are about to begin. It seemed they were so far away and now they’re here. The Miami National Antiques Show is first, beginning this Friday, January 24th, at noon and continuing until Sunday, January 26th, at 5 PM. The show is located at the Doubletree Expo Centre, Miami Merchandise Mart, near the southwest corner of Miami International Airport.

This is the warm-up show for the big Original Miami Beach Antique Show to be held the following week at the Miami Beach Convention Center. However, this year the show is under new management — U.S. Antique Shows, the same management as next week’s Original Miami Beach Antique Show. New show promoters generally mean a show will be better because of increased advertising, new dealers and better attendance. Here’s hoping it will be true this time.

We’ve been buying for the last several weeks, with great success. We’re bringing wonderful Tiffany Studios glass, lamps and candlesticks we’ve purchased from fantastic private collections. We’ll have it all on display at our four shows down south, starting with the Miami National Antiques Show.

You still have time to make plans to come to Miami early to see the Miami National Antiques Show and then the Original Miami Beach Antique Show the following week. According to the weather report, the temperature will be in the 60s and 70s every day for the next 10 days. With another polar vortex coming to the center of the country and moving east, this is a great time to visit Miami. You’ll be able to see two great antique shows, enjoy the weather and eat at many great restaurants.

U.S. Antique Shows buys three New York City antique shows from Stella Show Management

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

The Pier show on a recent opening day

The Pier show on a recent opening day

Irene Stella of Stella Show Management conceived of the idea of holding an antique show on New York City’s Hudson River, in a passenger ship terminal. The first few shows were so successful that management expanded the show to include two additional adjacent piers, and changed the name to the Triple Pier Antique Show. The demand from dealers to exhibit at the show was so great, that management further expanded the show to two consecutive weeks, twice a year. That went on for quite a while, until it was ultimately scaled back to one weekend, twice a year. Construction to some of the piers forced the show to be moved to the much larger Pier 94, just north of the original three piers, where it’s been successfully held for the last several years.

Fast forward to May 20, 2013, with simultaneous announcements from both Stella Show Management and U.S. Antique Shows, of the sale of three Stella New York antiques shows to U.S. Antique Shows, the promoter of the highly successful Original Miami Beach Antique Show. It marks the end of one era and the beginning of another in New York City antique shows.

I’ve got mixed emotions. I’ve enjoyed working with the Stellas over the years, but also look forward to the changes new management will undoubtedly make. New blood is usually good for a show, e.g. the purchase of the Baltimore Summer Antiques Show by the Palm Beach Show Group. They bought a good show and made it into one of the best shows in the country. Promotion of the show became job #1, which included a significant increase in the advertising budget. That was the start of a virtuous cycle where new buyers attended and new dealers were attracted. I wish U.S. Antique Shows, and its Director of Business Development, Andrea Canady, the same success with their new New York shows.

We’re back from our vacation/business trip, so that means two things. First, we have some great new French glass, which I’ve started to list on my website. The rest will be up within the next few days, so please check often. Second, I should have enough time to publish my blog twice a week, so check Mondays and Thursdays. We have no shows until late July, but please don’t hesitate to call or write. We’re always interested in buying, selling or trading.

Attendance was good on Friday afternoon

Attendance was good on Friday afternoon

The Original Miami Beach Antique Show ended on February 4, 2013, after a fairly successful run of five days. In asking around, most dealers replied “OK”, when asked “How was your show?”. One dealer from the West Coast told me “great”, but he was the only one. The consensus of the dealers I spoke to was good, but not exceptional. The overall impression I got was the results were acceptable, but nothing to write home about.

Fabulous Daum Nancy wheel-carved poppy jar

Personally, business was significantly better than the last couple of years. French glass was at the forefront of sales, with Tiffany glass just behind. Lamps were soft at the entire show. There were enough Tiffany lamps to choke an elephant — just too many for the number of buyers. Anyone who came to the show looking for an authentic Tiffany Studios lamp had a bewildering selection to choose from.

Attendance was good on Saturday, but sales weren't

Attendance was good on Saturday, but sales weren’t

Attendance was good most days, with the best sales happening on opening day, as expected. After all, the most motivated buyers come the first day. Business on the second day was good too, but then tailed off as the stragglers wandered in over the weekend. Monday was hit or miss for most dealers (and a hit for me).

Next year will be interesting, because the promoters of the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show purchased the Miami National Antiques Show (The Airport Show). Next year they will be promoting both shows, back to back. We’ll exhibit at the Airport Show one more time. If the new promoters can get more buyers through the door, we’ll do it again. If not, unfortunately we’ll be finished with the show.

The Palm Springs Modernism Show will run from February 16-18, 2013

The Palm Springs Modernism Show will run from February 16-18, 2013

Now we get to rest for a week and then on to California to exhibit at the Palm Springs Modernism Show for the first time. We haven’t had good luck in California in recent years, so we’re hoping the show will be good. If it isn’t, we’ll give up the entire state. That would be a shame, but we can’t afford to exhibit at shows where the buyers don’t show up. May I suggest that you come visit us? The dates for the show are February 16-18, at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

I will be posting videos on YouTube of my lecture on French Cameo Glass to the Metropolitan Glass Club. I need some time to edit the videos. When they’re ready, I’ll put the link on my website and here in my blog.

The show is looking great, with amazing quantity and quality. Many dealers exhibit at this show who rarely exhibit at other shows. I can’t think of another show that attracts dealers and collectors from so many countries. I’ve seen dealers from England, France, Argentina, Italy, Germany and of course, all over the US. Dealers and collectors fly in from all over the entire globe to shop this show. It’s a real happening.

My booth is bursting with not only the most I’ve ever brought, but the best quality I’ve ever brought. For instance, take a look at the big, fabulous Gallé Lake Como vase that I bought yesterday. It’s truly spectacular. The two 14″ Tiffany Studios Dragonfly lamps look great next to the new Handels, Pairpoints and other Tiffany lamps. I’ve got way more than I can describe in this blog. It’s not too late to make plans to come to the show. Come on down, enjoy the weather, eat in the great restaurants and shop the best antique show of the entire year!

2012 was an exceptionally good year. Period. End of blog. OK, OK, just kidding, about the end of the blog, not the year.

French glass was especially strong, with excellent sales for better examples of Gallé, Daum and pâte-de-verre. Collecting interest was primarily American, but with good international participation.

The Tiffany glass and lamp market was also in top form. Sales were excellent both privately and at auction, with more than a few record prices.

In some areas that had been weak, interest (and sales) strengthened. Specifically, I’m referring to Le Verre Francais and Schneider glass, Pairpoint puffy lamps and Handel reverse-painted lamps. Better examples showed life, with good sales privately and at auction. Pairpoint puffy sales were especially good at various shows around the country.

Here’s hoping that 2013 will continue the strong trend. This weekend we will be exhibiting at our first show of 2013, at the Birchwood Manor, in Whippany, NJ, Saturday and Sunday, January 5-6. We will be bringing all of our new and exciting purchases. We’ll have them all on display. Then on to the all-important Miami shows at the end of the month. If you can’t see us in New Jersey, don’t miss us in Miami.

I will be posting videos on YouTube of my lecture on French Cameo Glass to the Metropolitan Glass Club. I need some time to edit the videos. When they’re ready, I’ll put the link on my website and here in my blog.

There was action at the NYC Pier Antiques Show, March 17-18, 2012

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Big crowds lined up on Saturday morning for the opening of the show

Stella Show Management held their semi-annual NYC Pier Antiques Show this past weekend, March 17-18, 2012, with generally excellent results.

Some of the Saturday crowd

Attendance was excellent on opening day, Saturday. Interest was heavy and sales commensurate. My booth was the busiest it’s been at any show I can think of in the last 10 years. At one point in the morning, there were six bona fide buyers in my booth, all wanting my attention at the same time. My friend Tony and I could not handle the questions fast enough. I didn’t even realize I hadn’t eaten lunch until about 3:15 PM, when there was a break of five minutes. It was a good day by the time it ended at 6 PM, but I was frazzled and needed a drink.

My booth

Sunday was another story. The show opened at 10 AM (a big mistake). Nobody gets to a show early on Sunday, so it would have made good business sense to open at 11 AM. The number of attendees would have been the same by the end of the day. Everyone would have sold the same. The only difference would have been that the dealers (and the staff) would have gotten a needed extra hour of rest. (Irene. Are you listening? Please open the next show at 11 AM on Sunday. Everyone will thank you. I promise.)

One of the fine Tiffany Studios items sold at the show

Where was I before my rant? Oh, Sunday. Attendance was lighter on Sunday, but still pretty decent. The pace of the day was much more manageable and sales continued for me. How’s this comparison? The Original Miami Beach Antiques Show in February was a good show. It had a two-day setup and five-day public opening. For significantly lower expenses and a much smaller time commitment, I did 85% of the business at the Pier show that I did at the Miami Beach show. That’s quite an accomplishment. For me, it was the best show I’ve had at the Pier in many years. (And that was with two of my best NYC clients not buying anything from me.) Sales were diverse, from Tiffany glass and a lamp and an inkwell, to French cameo glass, to Icart etchings.

The Fashion Alley section of the show

In asking around to many dealers, I got the following responses. A dealer in Art Deco furnishings, jewelry and furniture, told me she had the best Pier show in many years. (Sound familiar?) A dealer in furniture and bronze exhibited at the Pier show for the first time. Many, many items in his booth were marked sold, and this was after a fabulous show in Miami Beach. He told the show promoter, Irene Stella, that he’s looking forward to the next Pier show. A couple of dealers in art glass said they had decent, but not exceptional, shows. A dealer in lamps said his show was good with sales of both lamps and glass. Two other glass dealers told me they had good shows. Most responses were favorable.

But no one show has all winners. One new dealer in lamps told me his total sales were zero (ouch!). Another dealer told me that most of the dealers he had spoken to had poor shows. Who did he speak to? They definitely weren’t the ones I spoke to.

If I add up all of the anecdotal information I’ve been gathering at antique shows, auctions, and general scuttlebutt, the market in antiques is really heating up. For example, my friend, Jim Julia, just had a gun and knife auction last week. He’s had some great sales, averaging about $10 million. His best gun sale to date grossed $12 million. Last week’s sale hit $18 million. According to Dudley Browne, the lamp and glass coordinator, people were throwing money at some of the items. Bidding was wild and wooly. It just warms the cockles of my heart.

One of the more interesting booths at the show that make it so eclectic

The next NYC Pier Antiques Show is scheduled for November 17-18, 2012. If I were you, I’d starting making my plans now. You won’t want to miss it.

Our next show is the The Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo, at the Baltimore Convention Center this coming week, March 22-24. It’s an experiment that I hope will work. I’ll be the only antiques exhibitor at the show. If the dealers and the public are in a good mood, I may wind up making some sales. Keep your fingers crossed. I’ll keep you posted.

The results of the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show, February 2-6, 2012

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday. This coming Monday’s blog will be about some amazing results at Doyle’s Belle Epoque auction.

Monday afternoon in my aisle

The Original Miami Beach Antiques Show opened on Thursday, February 2nd, and ended yesterday, February 6th. After speaking to many dealers, I can report the results as good to excellent. One dealer I didn’t know visited my booth unsolicited. He told me he reads my blog regularly and wanted me to know that his results were already excellent and it was only Friday.

A dealer in furniture and bronze told me he finally hit his “magic” number. It was pretty easy to figure out the magic number was $1 million. Now that’s an eye-popping show. I’ve heard of other dealers selling $500,000 to $750,000, but never $1 million. Kudos for a great show!

My booth

Attendance at the opening on Thursday was very good. A dealer told me he thought there 1000 people waiting at the front door at noon (perhaps an exaggeration). First day sales are usually best, because that’s when the most motivated buyers come. Personally the first day was best. Attendance, interest and sales seem to drop on a daily basis, as the least motivated buyers come into the show at the end. Overall, my show was very good — I’ve had some better and many worse. Interest was best in Pairpoint puffy lamps, French cameo glass and Icart etchings (a result I couldn’t have predicted).

Back to the other dealers. Most were very satisfied with their results. A few said excellent, most said good, and very few said fair to poor.

Another view of my booth

The show ended on Monday, and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why. There are almost no buyers on Monday, and the few that were there could easily have made up their minds on Sunday. To make things worse, the show ended at 6 PM on Monday, instead of 5 PM, or better yet, 4 PM. Management made announcements not to pack early, but there was no one there, so why not? 75% of the dealers were packing early. Eliminate Monday from the show and everyone will be happier. The results will be the same — same attendance, same sales. The only difference is that everyone will be spared an unnecessary day at the show.

There’s only one more show for us in Florida and that’s the important Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show. It runs from February 18 to February 21 and has some of the best dealers in the world exhibiting.

We’re off this week and it couldn’t come at a better time. We’re still in business, so don’t be bashful. Call or write!

The Original Miami Beach Antiques Show opens on Thursday, February 2, 2012

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday. Since the Original Miami Beach Antique Show closes on Monday, Feb. 6th, I will post again on Tuesday, Feb. 7th, with the results of the show.

We're starting to get set up on Tuesday

The Original Miami Beach Antiques Show started setting up on Tuesday, January 31st and continued until Tuesday, February 1st. As the show is huge, it was quite an undertaking to get all the dealers in and ready for business. Lots of business was transacted during set-up — I would estimate millions of dollars before the first paying customer will walk in the door on Thursday, February 2, 2012. I personally saw tens of thousands of dollars in business transacted.

We're set up and ready for business

This show is one of the most exciting of the year for a variety of reasons. First, the show is huge. Second, many of the exhibitors exhibit at very few shows. Third, the quality of the exhibits is very high. Fourth, buyers fly in from all over the world. Fifth, the show is in Miami Beach in the middle of winter (whoo hoo!). I wouldn’t be surprised if the total of all the merchandise for sale totaled $1 billion. I would also guess that many tens of millions of dollars of business will be transacted over the course of the show.

Rare and important, large Le Verre Francais Palmiers Bleus vase

I was lucky to buy some superb items during the set-up. In no particular order, I bought a rare and important Le Verre Francais Palmiers Bleus vase; a superb Tiffany Favrile green-black millifiori vase; a Tiffany Studios green turtleback swivel desk lamp; an R. Lalique highly opalescent box, Houppes; a Handel boudoir Venice scenic lamp; and finally a large 19th plaque of a beautiful woman.

The show runs from Thursday, February 2nd at noon, until Monday, February 6th at 6 PM. If you haven’t made your plans to come, there’s still time. The weather is great and so are the restaurants. You’ll thank me.

There’s only one more show in Florida for us after this one and that’s the important Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show. It runs from February 18 to February 21 and has some of the best dealers in the world exhibiting. We have a week in-between to rest and we’re really looking forward to it.
