Some superb results at Sotheby’s Important Design sale, December 13, 2017

I was leafing through my catalogs when I noticed one from Sotheby’s Important Design sale on December 13, 2017. There were some great results that tie into the Arts & Crafts Conference we just finished last week. My post is a little late, but I hope you find it interesting and worth reading.

The top lot of the sale was #54, a Claude Lalanne Bureau Crocodile
that realized $2,175,000

Sales totaled $13,948,625 for the 165 lots offered. Three Crocodile lots, #s 52-54, by Claude Lalanne, topped the sale. However my interest is with the Arts & Crafts and the Art Deco lots in the sale.

Greene & Greene lantern from the Robert R. Blacker house in Pasadena, CA, Sotheby’s lot #83

Lot #83 was a beautiful Greene & Greene lantern with iridescent glass from the Robert R. Blacker house in Pasadena, California. It sold near its low estimate of $250,000, realizing $287,500, including buyer’s premium.

Frank Lloyd Wright Tree of Life window from the Darwin D. Martin House, Buffalo, New York, Sotheby’s lot #90

Seven lots of windows by Frank Lloyd Wright were included in the sale. Three lots, #s 88-90, all achieved the same result of $435,000 versus estimates of $200,000 – $300,000.

A rare R. Lalique Luxembourg vase, Sotheby’s lot #107, sold for $150,000, including buyer’s premium

Two good pâte-de-verre vases by Argy-Rousseau, #s 105-106, failed to sell, with identical estimates of $30,000 – $50,000, while five lots of R. Lalique glass all sold mostly at or above their high estimates.

Our next show is not until May 18-20, 2018, when we’ll exhibit at the 2nd edition of the resurrected Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show at the Chicago Merchandise Mart. It’s a wonderful venue for a show that deserved to be restored from purgatory.

Lalique vases are made in molds, as opposed to French cameo vases that are usually hand-blown. That means that a sculptor first has to hand-sculpt an original, usually of clay. From there several molds are cast until the final iron version is ready. Molten glass is injected into the mold and then cooled very slowly, usually over 24 hours or more. The process is called annealing and its purpose is to remove stress from the glass, so it doesn’t crack. After the cold vase is removed from the mold, it goes to a glass finisher who grinds the rim, the base and any irregularities until the vase is smooth and sits flat. Finally the vase is signed and ready for sale.

Different glass can be injected into the same mold to create variations, which may include different colors or opalescence. Many modern collectors look to obtain colored variations of the same vase, which always command premium prices over their colorless cousins. Certain rarer colors, like red, are the most sought after.

Some exceptional results at Christie’s South Kensington Lalique auction, May 22, 2013

Christie’s South Kensington held a Lalique auction on May 22, 2013, with some rare items selling for very strong prices. Total sales for the 185-lot auction were a very respectable £799,812 ($1,244,307).

Top lot of the sale was #99, a very rare car mascot entitled Comète (Comet), No. 1123. It sold for approximately double its low estimate of £35,000, realizing £79,875 ($120,851), including buyer’s premium.

Christie’s expected the final lot of the sale to take top honors, but it took second place. Lot #185 was a very rare red Hirondelles (Swallows) vase. It exceeded its high estimate of £50,000 to sell for £73,875 ($111,773).

Third place went to lot #181, a rare green cased vase entitled Gros Scarabées (Large Scarabs). It easily exceeded its pre-sale estimate of £25,000 – £35,000, to sell for £49,875($75,461). The same model, in a rarer red color, selling as lot #180, sold for less money, £33,750($51,064), because of a condition problem (grinding of the rim exterior).

No shows until July 19-21, when we’ll be in Denver. A fellow dealer convinced me to try the show again. She said the show has new promoters, who filled the hall with buyers the last time. Art Deco bronze and ivory figures lead the way at Hindman’s 20th Century Decorative Arts sale, May 1, 2013

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, of Chicago, held a 20th Century Decorative Arts sale yesterday, May 1, 2013, with some excellent results. 507 lots crossed the block, with the pottery section of the sale scheduled for today, May 2, 2013.

Leading the way were Art Deco bronze & ivory figures by the likes of Preiss, Chiparus and Colinet. Two lots tied for top honors — #333, a Preiss group entitled The Bathers and #337, a Colinet figure entitled Ankara Dancer, both selling for $50,000, including buyer’s premium. Even though the prices were the same, the Preiss had a much better result, selling for almost 10 times its high estimate, while the Colinet sold below its low estimate. The market in Art Deco bronze & ivory figures has been strong for decades and has legs (no pun intended).

Top lot of the Tiffany Studios glass section of the sale went to #130, a fine-quality blue Favrile wheel-carved vase. It easily exceeded its pre-sale estimate of $2,000-4,000, to realize $11,875, including buyer’s premium — a handsome price for a 9″ vase.

There weren’t many R. Lalique lots in the sale, but a couple were special. Lot #301 was a rare, green cased Perruches vase. Estimated to sell for $10,000-15,000, it realized $27,500, including buyer’s premium. An even more rare object, an opalescent Tresor de la Mer perfume, sold for more money, $57,500, but below its low estimate.

Demetre Chiparus was the star of Bonham’s Chiparus, Lalique & The Decorative Arts auction of November, 14, 2012

Bonham’s held its Chiparus, Lalique & The Decorative Arts auction in London on November, 14, 2012, with mixed results. Demetre Chiparus bronze and ivory figures sold well, but Rene Lalique items did not.

The top lot of the sale was #78, a bronze and ivory grouping entitled The Dolly Sisters. Estimated to sell for £150,000 – £200,000, it realized £277,250 ($444,136) — slightly above the high estimate, including buyer’s premium.

Others Chiparus bronze & ivory figurines also did well, with Starfish selling for £91,250 ($146,165) — near its high estimate of £85,000.

R. Lalique blue vase, Escargot, Bonham’s lot #192

The top R. Lalique vase in the sale was lot #192, an electric blue Escargot vase. It sold for £49,250 ($78,879), near the low estimate, including buyer’s premium. Many Lalique vases did not sell, probably because the estimates were too aggressive. Conservative estimates almost always achieve the best results.

Coyle’s Auction gets good results for Grueby and R. Lalique glass, June 10, 2012

Coyle’s Auction Gallery of Bellingham, MA, held their summer auction on June 10, 2012. Many of the items were estate fresh, including a fine Grueby two color vase and an R. Lalique bowl and plate. They both did quite well.

The Grueby vase was two-color, with yellow flowers and leaves on a standard Grueby green ground, repeating three times around the vase. The vase was in “as found” condition, which meant that it was filthy, but in otherwise perfect condition. That’s when you know an item is really estate fresh. It sold for $10,250 + buyer’s premium, for a total of $11,787.50 — impressive!

An opalescent R. Lalique bowl and plate with mermaids were sold together as one lot. Continuing the strength for good or better R. Lalique at auctions everywhere, the lot sold for $3,565, including the buyer’s premium.

Tiffany Studios Favrile red vase soars at Pook & Pook auction, June 28, 2012

Wonderful Tiffany Studios Favrile vase, Pook & Pook lot #696

Pook & Pook held their Decorative Arts Sale on June 28, 2012. Most of the glass in the sale was from the collection of Charlene Sussel of Garrett Park, Maryland. Included in her collection was a fabulous red and yellow decorated Tiffany Favrile vase. Though diminutive in size at 4″, it was not in rarity or quality. The very low estimate of $400 – $600 showed that it was there to be sold. There is nothing better than fresh-to-the-market, top quality merchandise at bargain basement estimates — it’s like mice to cheese. As a result, the price soared to $28,440 — not bad for a 4″ vase. I thought it was a $15,000 vase, so even I was surprised, but not shocked.

Good R. Lalique vases continue to show strength, no matter the auction. Pook & Pook sold a nice opalescent Ceylan vase for close to retail value. It realized $4,740, against a pre-sale estimate of $2,000 – $3,000.

A few good results at Bonham’s New York 20th Century Decorative Arts sale, June 12, 2012

Bonham’s New York held their 20th Century Decorative Arts sale on June 12, 2012, with fair results. There were a few good sales, but more than a few items went unsold. Sotheby’s and Christie’s held their 20th Century sales in the two days following Bonham’s, with considerably better results.

Top lot of the Bonham’s sale was #4061, a Tiffany Studios Lotus table lamp. Estimated to sell for $80,000 – $100,000, it squeaked by to sell near the low estimate, reaching $92,500, including buyer’s premium.

Second best lot of the sale was an Art Deco 24½” bronze and ivory statue by Demetre Chiparus, entitled Dourga. It soared past its pre-sale estimate of $25,000 – $35,000 to sell for $88,900. That continued the decade-long strength by important Art Deco bronze and ivory artists like Chiparus and Preiss.

René Lalique glass sold well, also showing continued strength. Top Lalique lot was #4195, a rare frosted glass two-handled vase, Deux Anneaux Lizards. It was sold privately after the auction for $20,000, against an aggressive estimate of $20,000 – $30,000.

Noguchi table leads the way at Christie’s New York Important 20th Century Decorative Art & Design sale, June 14, 2012

Important and unique marble table by Isamu Noguchi, Christie's lot #175

Christie’s New York held their Important 20th Century Decorative Art & Design sale on June 14, 2012. A unique marble table by Isamu Noguchi, lot #175, commissioned for the Chappaqua, NY home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Dretzin, 1948-49, led the sale with an impressive result. Estimated to sell for $800,000 – $1,200,000, it more than doubled its high estimate to sell for $2,882,500, including buyer’s premium.

Important R. Lalique cire perdue vase, Rondes D'Enfants, Christie's lot #153

Top lot of the glass section of the sale was #153, an R. Lalique cire perdue vase from 1930, entitled Ronde D’Enfants, #5/5 from a small edition of five. It sold within its estimate of $200,000 – $300,000, realizing $290,500. The Lalique market, in general, appears solid, with good results worldwide for better vases.

Rare Tiffany Studios Dragonfly lamp on blownout crab base, Christie's lot #111

A wonderful Tiffany Studios 20″ diameter Dragonfly table lamp, lot #111, with a rare blownout crab base, was the lamp leader, selling for $266,500, against a pre-sale estimate of $100,000 – $150,000.

Total sales were $8,821,337, roughly twice as much as Sotheby’s the day before, helped in no small part by the sale of the Noguchi table. For the complete results of the sale, click on the following link. Christie’s 20th Century sale results.

Just prior to the Important 20th Century Decorative Art & Design sale, Christie’s conducted a one-owner sale of seven Tiffany Studios lamps. Results were less than stellar, with four of the seven lamps selling, including a very fine Wisteria lamp for $602,500. For the results of this sale, click on the following link. James D. Julia’s Important Lamp and Glass auction is happening today, Thursday, June 21, while Skinner’s 20th Century Design sale will happen this Saturday. After that we can expect a calmer July.

Rare Le Verre Francais vases - Poissons and Palmiers Bleus

December is always a very busy month for antiques, mostly for buying, and not as much for selling. People get busy with their Christmas shopping and that doesn’t usually include a valuable antique. But sometimes it does, so I’m always ready to provide emergency service. If you still need a fine antique gift, I can work very quickly and so can UPS or FedEx.

I’ve been buying out of control, and that’s good. Business is usually best in winter, especially at the Florida shows, so I’m loaded for bear. I was lucky enough to be able to buy some incredible items by Tiffany Studios, Daum Nancy, Emile Gallé, R. Lalique, Le Verre Francais and others. I’ll illustrate a few of them in this blog. Fantastic Tiffany Studios Art Nouveau smoker stand with original enameling

Among the many Tiffany Studios items I bought are vases — red, red decorated, Cypriote, millifiori, etc. For lamps, I purchased a 20″ Arrowroot, a 10-light lily and a 7-light lily. For miscellaneous, I have a Tiffany Studios pottery vase, lots of desk items, and an incredible Art Nouveau smoker stand with original enameling, unlike any I’ve owned before.

One of the best Daum Nancy vases I've acquired in years

The French cameo glass market, especially Daum Nancy, has been solid for years, and shows no signs of slowing. I recently acquired some fabulous items, including a very rare and beautiful farm scene, two rain scenes and an unbelievable collection of about 25 miniature vases.

You can see everything I have for sale if you visit me at one of my winter shows. The first will be at Birchwood Manor in Whippany, NJ, the weekend of January 7-8, 2012. Then a week’s break and off to Florida for the start of our Florida circuit, first in Palm Beach (Jan. 20-22), then two in Miami (Jan. 27-29 and Feb. 2-6), and then back to W.
