I just bought a great collection of French cameo glass

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Last Thursday I flew out of town to purchase a collection of French cameo glass that I helped assemble in the 1980s and 1990s. There were some really great items, so I was very pleased to repurchase them.

Rare and beautiful Daum vase with applied snails and grapes

Rare and beautiful Daum vase with applied snails and grapes

It’s hard to put them in order of importance, but I’ll try. First would have to be a 10¼” Daum vase with two applied snails and eight applied grapes. What can I say about this vase except that it’s really great and important!

Rare Daum Nancy Weeping Willow vase

Rare Daum Nancy Weeping Willow vase

Second place is probably a multiple tie, but I sure like a Daum scenic vase with willow trees, a canoe and a mallard. It’s not only extremely rare, but gorgeous too, with incredible color and detail. I’ve only seen the tri-lobed shape a few times ever, making it equally rare to the decoration. Nice size at 5½” tall x 5″ diameter.

Rare Daum Wheat vase

Rare Daum Wheat vase

Wheat is one of Daum’s rarest and most desirable decorations. What’s especially nice and unusual is that the wheat sheaves were gilded first and then the detail was hand-painted on top — a real rarity. Most of the time gilding was used for fine detail, as well as decoration on the bases and rims of vases. This 11″ vase also has highly intricate gilded decoration on the foot.

There’s more, including a Daum Farm vase, a monumental Daum vase with wild orchids and four bees, a super rare early Gallé Crystallerie box with original sterling silver fitted tray, etc. By the time you read this, some of the vases may already be sold, so they won’t even make it to my website, but others will, so please take a look.

baltimore-8-2015The Baltimore Summer Antiques Show is just around the corner. It opens to the public on Thursday, August 20th, at noon and continues until Sunday, August 23 at 6 PM. If you haven’t made plans yet, there’s still time. I just checked hotwire.com and unbelievably there are 4½-star rooms in the Inner Harbor available for $85/night. Wow! The show is the best summer antique show in the entire United States, so it’s worth a trip from anywhere. Hope to see you there!

Important Daum Nancy Impressionist vase

Important Daum Nancy Impressionist vase

We haven’t exhibited at any shows since the Chicago Botanic Garden in mid-April, so I’ve directed a lot of my energy to buying for the summer shows, the Denver World Wide Antique Show, July 24-26, 2015, and the Baltimore Summer Antiques Fair, August 20-23, 2015. We were successful both in France and in the US, so here are a few of the newest and most interesting purchases. I’ll be spending time this week and next adding as many new items to my website as possible. Keep checking back.

Fine, rare Tiffany Favrile red vase

Fine, rare Tiffany Favrile red vase

I bought a pair of rare and very desirable 7″ Tiffany red vases. I’ve known where they were for the last couple of years, but the dealer who owned them couldn’t sell them, because he insisted on selling them as a pair. The Tiffany numbers are very close to each other, indicating they were probably made on the same day. I have no problem selling them individually or as a pair. It’s not like a pair of candlesticks that were meant to stay together. On any given day, Tiffany produced a run of consecutively numbered vases that were meant to be sold individually. These red vases are no different.

Fantastic Austrian bronze novelty lamp

Fantastic Austrian bronze novelty lamp

I just bought this incredible Austrian bronze novelty lamp, 11½” tall. It was probably designed by Bergman, because this is the quality he created. The condition is superb, with original colored glass windows. Haven’t had anything this wonderful in Austrian bronze in quite some time.

Fine Daum Nancy Peacock Feather vase

Fine Daum Nancy Peacock Feather vase

Daum Peacock Feather vases are deceptively sophisticated. Most of the work on the vase is standard acid-etching, but not the centers of the feathers. The light blue and dark blue glass was applied when the glass was molten, then pressed into the vase on the marver. The process is called padding, which makes for special vases. I get one or two Peacock Feather vases yearly and they sell very quickly. This example is almost 12″ tall. (The vase is not in yet, so please excuse the quality of the photo. I’ll post a better one after the vase has arrived).

There’s lots more coming in in the next couple of weeks, including two important Daum Nancy Blackbird vases, two large Tiffany Favrile Jack-in-the-Pulpit vases, two Gallé Magnolia vases and lots more. Keep checking my site, as I will be updating it daily.

Setting up at the Baltimore Summer Antiques Fair, August 19-20, 2014

We can drive right up to our booths in Baltimore

We can drive right up to our booths in Baltimore

The Baltimore Summer Antiques Fair will be open today, Thursday, August 21, as you read my blog. We’ve spent the last couple of days setting up the show. It was hard work, but worth the effort — the booth looks great. It’s filled with lots of new goodies that we’ve been buying both from private homes and other dealers. During setup, all the dealers shop from each other, including me. I was able to buy some lovely items.

The show is fabulous. Just like in the winter for Miami Beach, dealers save their best items to bring to this show. It’s worth the effort because many of the attendees travel great distances to attend. Only motivated people are willing to do that, so the crowd includes serious buyers. People travel to this show from all over the world, not just the USA. They come to see the dealers who exhibit at very few shows and the vast assortment of great merchandise.

What other city offers this? Jimmy John's is next door to the Convention Center

What other city offers this? Jimmy John’s is next door to the Convention Center

You’ll not only enjoy the fabulous show, but also Baltimore. It’s changed greatly since we started exhibiting there over 30 years ago, all for the better. Entire neighborhoods have been transformed, which include really great restaurants. If you’re a foodie, like I am, you’ll love the choice. Then take advantage of the Inner Harbor and its activities, including a world-class aquarium.

See you at the show! We’re in the extreme right-hand corner as you enter the show, in booth #2100. Come and say hello!! The show runs until this Sunday, August 24th, at 6 PM. Then tune in on Monday for the results of the show.

The Baltimore Summer Antiques Fair opens next Thursday, August 21, 2014

This was our booth at the Baltimore show

The important Baltimore Summer Antiques Fair opens next Thursday, August 21, 2014 at noon and continues until Sunday, August 24, 2014 at 6 PM. This is one of the two most important and exciting shows of the year, together with the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show in the winter. The show is really big, so the selection is vast. Some of the dealers exhibit at very few shows, so it’s an opportunity to see some very exciting, high-quality merchandise. Think of something you want to see and chances are good you’ll find it at the show.

We'll have this important Gallé Lake Como vase at the show

We’ll have this important Gallé Lake Como vase at the show

We’ve been shopping and shopping since late spring, so we’re going to have a fresh selection of merchandise, including some real rarities in Tiffany Favrile glass and lamps, as well as French cameo glass by Gallé and Daum. I’ve got an appointment this week to buy some Tiffany glass and lamps from an important private collection. I’ll bring those items to the show.

Billy Rau of M.S. Rau is one of the important dealers at the show

There’s still plenty of time to make arrangements to visit the show. I like to use Hotwire for the best deals on hotels. I just checked for a 4-day stay in the Baltimore Inner Harbor area (right by the show), starting on Wednesday and departing on Sunday. Here’s what I found. A 3½-star hotel is $87/night (my guess is the Sheraton next door) and a 4-star boutique hotel for $122/night (my guess is the Kimpton Hotel Monaco) and a 3-star hotel for $75/night (my guess is the Holiday Inn).

Inside the National Aquarium

Inside the National Aquarium

I promise you, you’ll enjoy the show and the Baltimore Inner Harbor. Are you a foodie? There are lots of great restaurants. Like the water? There are ferries, street performers, and lots of stores at the Inner Harbor, plus the National Aquarium. Come to the show and let me know what you think. Monday I’ll post the results, which I trust will be good.

The results of the Kansas City Antiques Expo, August 1-2, 2014

Monday’s post will be up by 10 AM.

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Saturday afternoon in my booth

Saturday afternoon in my booth

The Kansas City Antiques Expo began on Friday at 10 AM and continued until 6 PM Saturday. This was my first time at the new exhibition facility at the Holiday Inn KCI. Last year, the show was in Overland Park, KS. Our show was going poorly until we made a couple of sales on Saturday afternoon, including a Tiffany Favrile floor lamp to clients who drove all the way from Dallas (500 miles) to see us. (Thank you!!)

This Tiffany lamp is similar to the one we sold at the show

This Tiffany lamp is similar to the one we sold at the show

Attendance was very light the entire two days, making it difficult to make sales. Chris Miller, the promoter, is a nice guy who’s trying hard to build the show back up, but is obviously having a tough time of it. I think part of the problem is that it was the summer edition of the show. Colder weather is almost always better for attendance, interest and sales. We’ll probably try the show again in November, as the dates coordinate with our shows in Winnetka, IL and New York, NY.

In asking around, I mostly heard grumbling about the attendance. A few people did well enough to come back, including a dealer from Minnesota who especially wanted to support Chris Miller. Some people told me they won’t be returning.

baltimore-8-2014Now we’re off for a couple of weeks before the big, important Baltimore Summer Antiques Show. It’s the biggest and best show of the summer, and one of the best of the year. It’s to the summer what the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show is to the winter. Buyers fly in from all over the world, including as far away as Japan. There are still great rooms available on Hotwire.com. Here are some hints. A 4-star hotel is available for $101/night. It’s probably the Hilton next door. A 4-star boutique hotel is available @ $114/night. That’s probably the Monaco Baltimore Hotel, a Kimpton hotel. A 3½-star hotel is available for $80/night. That’s probably the Sheraton, also next door. (I make no guarantees, just educated guesses.) Make your plans now to come to the show.  You’ll love the show and you’ll love Baltimore.

Wonderful Tiffany floriform vase, sold after the Baltimore show

Wonderful Tiffany floriform vase, sold after the Baltimore show

First a short follow-up to the Baltimore Summer Antiques Fair. Not only was the show a success, but it got even better afterward. I made a sale to a gentleman who was considering purchasing a major Tiffany vase at the show, but didn’t make up his mind until a couple of days afterward. Another gentleman, who had seen a French dueling gun set in my booth, called to buy it. Unfortunately for him (and for me), I had already sold it at the show. Follow-up show sales are few and far between, so it was very gratifying to hear from these two gentlemen.

I had some good luck buying recently, including several Tiffany Favrile, Daum and Gallé vases. Of the Tiffany vases, a 5¾” red example, with a great shape, was one of the better buys. It’s really red, not orange, like some of the less desirable examples.

One of my fine Daum Nancy purchases was a fall scenic tumbler. I love Daum fall scenic vases because of their great color and detail. This 4¾” square tumbler has vivid color.

A fine blownout vase with blue berries was one of my better Galle purchases. Galle blownout vases are rarer than standard cameo vases and as such are very desirable and easy to sell. Collectors from all over the world enjoy them.

Don’t have any shows for several weeks, so I’m devoting more time to updating my site. I’ve already listed about 10 new Tiffany, Daum, and Gallé vases. Click here to take a look. Then look for my totally redesigned website, with many changes and improvements, coming sooner than later. Can’t wait to show you and get your reaction!

There was a pretty good crowd forming 15 minutes before the show opened on Thursday

The Baltimore Summer Antiques Fair was held this past weekend, August 22-25, 2013, with generally good results. Attendance was moderate to good and relatively consistent over the four days of the show. No earthquakes or hurricanes this year, although that was a great year for sales.

My booth was crowded on Saturday afternoon

It’s been a few years since the Palm Beach Show Group took over ownership and promotion of the Baltimore Summer Antiques Fair from the previous owner. In that time, the quality of the show has gone up, as well as attendance and sales. Kudos to them for a job well done. They also own and promote the Palm Beach Antiques Show, so we added it to our winter schedule.

In asking around, the majority of dealer’s comments were favorable. Here they are, in no special order. A dealer in general antiques commented “OK, disappointing, but I’ll do it again.”; from another dealer in general antiques, “Very strong, with an enthusiastic audience”; a dealer in Art Nouveau ceramics said “We had a good show, the best first two days in a long time.”; and from a California dealer in general antiques, “Very solid. We should have this kind of show everywhere”. Not all California dealers fared as well — one who deals in general antiques commented “Not good.” A Midwest dealer in general antiques told me, “Great. I’m thrilled.”, while another general dealer from the Midwest commented “Excellent”. A Southern art glass dealer told me “Sold over 50 pieces. Best show we ever had.”; from a general dealer “Very mediocre.”; from a dealer in French and Asian antiques, “Excellent, exceeding last year. Many sales to Chinese and Russian clients.”; from a dealer in Austrian glass, ceramics and design, “Very good show. Pleasantly surprised. Strong sales.”, and finally an English dealer specializing in Chinese export porcelain didn’t make a single sale. Ugh! My heart goes out to him.

Personally our show was very strong, with sales best in, you guessed it if you read my blog, French glass. Other categories that were selling were American art glass, American art pottery, paintings, and Icart etchings. We did business every day, making the show enjoyable and interesting. We sold to buyers from everywhere, including Brazil, Japan, Russia and many US states. That makes two wonderful shows in a row and a great end to the summer. Business usually gets better the colder the weather, so here’s looking forward to a good autumn.

Don’t have any shows for several weeks, so I’ll be able to devote more time to updating my site. I hope to get 10-15 new items listed in the next week or so, including some important Tiffany, Daum, and Gallé vases. Please take a look. Then look for my totally redesigned website, with many changes and improvements, coming in the next few weeks. Can’t wait to show you and get your reaction!

I’ve got two important shows coming up this week and next, the Chicago Summer Antiques Show and the Baltimore Summer Antiques Fair. I know important clients will be there, so I always try to come up with fresh delicacies (sounds delicious, no?). This week I was lucky enough to get into a private home with a wonderful collection of Tiffany Favrile glass. The owner has decided he’s gotten to the point in life where he’s now interested in selling. Good for me and good for you.

The summer antique show season is about to begin

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

The summer antiques shows are almost upon us, with Denver first. We gave up on Denver a few years ago, but were convinced to try it again, since the show is under new management. Hopefully it will be better this time around, so we can look forward to returning the following year. The show will be held at the Denver Mart, beginning on Friday, July 19 at 10 AM and ending on Sunday, July 21, at 5 PM. Please visit us in booth 107 and take a look at our spectacular new purchases, accumulated from around the world.

The following week, we will exhibit locally in the New York area, at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany, NJ. It’s a short, weekend show, July 27-28. The quality is very good for a small show. Some years it’s gone very well and others not. We’ll see what’s in store for us this year.

August’s shows have a better track record. First we’ll be in Rosemont, IL, for the Chicago Summer Antiques Show at the Rosemont Convention Center, August 16-18. It’s a small, but good quality show. We always look forward to Chicago, as we have many good friends and clients in the area. We’ll no longer exhibit at Arlington Racetrack, if there is another show there (and that’s in doubt). That increases the importance of our other shows in the greater Chicago area.

The last show of the summer is also the best. The Baltimore Summer Antiques Show has been slowly evolving, first under the stewardship of the former promoter, Frank Farbenbloom, and now under the ownership of the Palm Beach Show Group. Every year, incrementally, the show has gotten better, with higher quality exhibitors, increased attendance, and stronger sales. In my opinion, it’s now one of the two best antiques shows of the year, competing only with the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show in January. Make your travel plans now and join buyers who drive and fly in from all over the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. Then stop by my booth to say hi.

U.S. Antique Shows buys three New York City antique shows from Stella Show Management

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

The Pier show on a recent opening day

The Pier show on a recent opening day

Irene Stella of Stella Show Management conceived of the idea of holding an antique show on New York City’s Hudson River, in a passenger ship terminal. The first few shows were so successful that management expanded the show to include two additional adjacent piers, and changed the name to the Triple Pier Antique Show. The demand from dealers to exhibit at the show was so great, that management further expanded the show to two consecutive weeks, twice a year. That went on for quite a while, until it was ultimately scaled back to one weekend, twice a year. Construction to some of the piers forced the show to be moved to the much larger Pier 94, just north of the original three piers, where it’s been successfully held for the last several years.

The line to get in was huge before a recent opening of the Original Miami Beach Antique Show

The line to get in was huge before a recent opening of the Original Miami Beach Antique Show

Fast forward to May 20, 2013, with simultaneous announcements from both Stella Show Management and U.S. Antique Shows, of the sale of three Stella New York antiques shows to U.S. Antique Shows, the promoter of the highly successful Original Miami Beach Antique Show. It marks the end of one era and the beginning of another in New York City antique shows.

A view of a section of the Baltimore Summer Antiques Show

A view of a section of the Baltimore Summer Antiques Show

I’ve got mixed emotions. I’ve enjoyed working with the Stellas over the years, but also look forward to the changes new management will undoubtedly make. New blood is usually good for a show, e.g. the purchase of the Baltimore Summer Antiques Show by the Palm Beach Show Group. They bought a good show and made it into one of the best shows in the country. Promotion of the show became job #1, which included a significant increase in the advertising budget. That was the start of a virtuous cycle where new buyers attended and new dealers were attracted. I wish U.S. Antique Shows, and its Director of Business Development, Andrea Canady, the same success with their new New York shows.

We’re back from our vacation/business trip, so that means two things. First, we have some great new French glass, which I’ve started to list on my website. The rest will be up within the next few days, so please check often. Second, I should have enough time to publish my blog twice a week, so check Mondays and Thursdays. We have no shows until late July, but please don’t hesitate to call or write. We’re always interested in buying, selling or trading.
