Heritage Auction Galleries new NYC location

Heritage Auction Galleries of Dallas, Texas, opened a new gallery in NYC on September 1, 2010. It is located at 445 Park Ave. and 57th St. — a prestigious location. The location will feature a rotating window featuring selections from upcoming auctions.

Heritage is now the third largest auction house in the world with total sales of more than $600 million, behind only Sotheby’s and Christie’s. Heritage started their auction business solely with coins, but has gradually expanded into many other categories. Rather than compete toe to toe with their larger rivals, they have cultivated specialty auctions such as illustration art, comic books and sports collectibles. This strategy allows them to compete in areas where the major auction houses are deficient.

I requested comment from Heritage regarding the opening of their new gallery and received this response from Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auction Galleries.

We certainly don’t expect to be compared with Christie’s or Sotheby’s; that’s not our business model. We have a large headquarters building in Dallas, but our New York showroom is small, and was carefully designed to be a convenience for our consignors and clients. It’s centrally located on Park Avenue, near the corner of 57th Street, one of the top demographic foot traffic locations anywhere in the world. Visitors who come to our Manhattan “jewel box” with an advance appointment will be able to show their items to, and converse with, any of our experts in Dallas or Beverly Hills via video satellite. We also plan to introduce “simulcast“ auctions in New York, Dallas and Beverly Hills. We are first and foremost an auction house utilizing cutting edge technology, as we always have. Our web site, HA.com, has over 500,000 registered bidder members, and gets significantly more traffic than Christies.com and Sothebys.com combined. That’s why over 70% of the lots we sell at auction sell to non-dealers – the highest percentage of any auction house.

We expect our New York location to operate more like a boutique, even though we are by far the largest auctioneer of vintage collectibles in the world. In many categories, such as Illustration Art, Coins, Comics, Currency, and Movie Posters, we outsell all other auction houses combined. Of course one of the most talked-about features of Heritage’s new Manhattan venue isn’t high tech at all: It’s the Heritage Window on Park Avenue, which will feature a continually rotating million-dollar exhibition of highlights from upcoming Heritage auctions, across all of our categories. The items are on display 24/7.

Heritage’s first NYC auction will be an illustration art auction. It will take place in a rented location at The Ukrainian Institute, 2 E. 79th St. and Fifth Ave., NYC on October 15, 2010. The auction will include a fine assortment of art from the best known illustrators including Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, J.C. Leyendecker and Gil Elvgren.

Excellent results at Rago’s early 20th Century/Arts & Crafts auction, October 1, 2010, including a few lottery winners

The results at Rago Auctions on October 1, 2010, showed just how much the public appreciated the assembled variety of pottery, glass, lamps and furniture. Many of the items were high quality and fresh to the market — a combination that’s hard to beat. Talk of recession is finished. Now buyers have to compete strongly for the best merchandise.

Rare Marblehead decorated vase by Arthur Hennessey, Rago lot #131, October 1, 2010

The top lot of the sale was a rare 7″ Marblehead vase, decorated by Arthur Hennessey. Even with a 1½” hairline crack (usually the kiss of death), the vase soared to $134,200, against a pre-sale estimate of $25,000-35,000. Bidding was fierce as this was only one of four known to exist.

The Martin Brothers of London and Southall were nicely represented with nine lots, six of which were the very desirable bird tobacco jars. Four of these birds were among the top ten lots of the sale. Lot 209 was estimated to sell for $17,500-22,500. It doubled its estimate to sell for $39,040. Again damage didn’t seem to be much of an issue. The public was looking for excellent examples and they weren’t going to be deterred by a few chips or hairline cracks. Ceramics buyers are much more tolerant of condition issues than glass buyers.

There were more than a couple of lottery winners at this auction. Lot #463 was a rare Tiffany Studios pottery bowl with fern decoration, the only example known. It was recently purchased at an estate auction in Pennsylvania for $115. It sold for $25,620, against a pre-sale estimate of $15,000-20,000. Not a bad day’s pay.

I emailed David for his impressions of the sale. Here is his reply.

“We were surprised by how strong the Tiffany and Lalique performed in the sale. I knew the material well enough to understand it was unusual, but not nearly enough to think it could take off. The first Tiffany glass lot, the early blue vase (lot #473, $23,180), both the consignor and I thought wasn’t even Tiffany. That collection of glass (and including the large jeweled desk set) did more than double what we told the consignor to expect. The Tiffany pottery fern bowl was recently purchased by the consignor at a local auction for $115 and I knew it would do well, but the $25k was above our expectations. And the Tiffany sketch book, from his trip up the Nile in 1908, passed but sold after the sale. That was a surprise because there were like 28 sketches in the book which, individually, had to be worth $1500 – 2k each on the average and the reserve was $35k. And I’m thinking that the book, as a whole, is worth more than the sum of its parts.

I’m still not sure about the Lalique and why the prices, especially for the jewelry, were so high. There must be a new buyer or three out there focusing on that niche and driving the prices. In any case, we had most of them in for $1000 – 1500 and many brought from about $4k to 11k including premium. The only sour note was again the non sales of tired dealer merchandise (lamps mostly) that were taken in at fair prices but didn’t sell for the same reasons the dealers who consigned them couldn’t sell them. Estate lamps, like our daffodil? It’s like buyers have a sixth sense for what’s new to the market and there to be sold (that brought 40k…) on top of that, we ended up having to pull the Tiffany parasol lamp because the base was doctored. We had a buyer in Europe who left a covering bid and a serious buyer on the phone from the east coast, so it was more than sold. But we have no interest in getting behind a piece with problems. The auction as a whole was over 80% sold for the weekend and hammered in estimate range, totaling (with bp) over 5.5 mil.”

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention another wonderful story from the next day’s auction. A picker had found a Cowan Jazz bowl and brought it to a Rago Monday appraisal day. It had been used as a planter, so it was very dirty, with mineral deposits to the interior glaze at the bottom and two hairline cracks to the rim. The picker wanted a $5,000 reserve. He was advised to permit Rago Auctions to clean and professionally restore the bowl. The bowl was presented at auction with all the details of the restoration. It carried a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-30,000 and sold for $158,600 — a fantastic price, but below the more than $200,000 for another example that previously sold in perfect condition. According to David, the result will make an important impact on the quality of the consignor’s life.

A stunning result for a Tiffany Studios loving cup at Leland Little Auctions, September 18, 2010

Leland Little Auction & Estate Sales, of Hillsborough, NC, held their September auction on the 18th. Included in the sale were three Tiffany objects, of which two were from the estate of James & Lois Bower of Bement, Illinois. Lot #438 was described as “Tiffany & Co. Favrile Glass Three Handled Vase early 20th century, the organic baluster form with three applied handles, with rich gold overlaid on a bluish-purple body, with paper label and etched “5685 C” and “Favrile.” 6 7/8 in. Purchased from Tiffany’s in New York and thence by descent in the family.” What Leland Little Auctions did not know was that the loving cup was a very desirable example of Tiffany Lava glass. Tiffany Lava glass is quite rare and highly sought after by collectors. Even the best collections have very few examples. The loving cup carried a pre-sale estimate of $1,000-2,000 and soared to an incredible $62,100, including buyer’s premium. Well, not that incredible, because Lava glass commands a premium price and this was a superb example, fresh to the market. As Leland Little Auctions did not know the true value of this item, they did not properly advertise it. That didn’t stop the cognoscenti from finding it. It may even have helped. Everyone thought they were in the game, so the vase had lots of action.

The second item from the Bower estate, lot #439, was very nice, but not important. Additionally it had an original flaw on the interior of the vase that looked like a crack, but was not. It sold for $7,475, against a pre-sale estimate of $1,000-2,000. Still an excellent result, but not dramatic.

The final Tiffany lot of the sale was #440. It was another example of Tiffany Lava glass, correctly catalogued by Leland Little Auctions. The shape was not nearly as nice as the loving cup, and it was in flawed condition with an internal 2½” crack. This cup was not from the Bower estate, which made for a very rare event. Two of the three Tiffany items offered for sale at that auction were Lava glass. What were the odds? This item did not fare as well. It carried a pre-sale estimate of $2,000-4,000, and sold for $2,300, at the low end of the estimate.

That leads me back to my theme of auction estimating, which I have repeated on numerous occasions. If the auction estimates are low, even extraordinarily low, the results will be best. It tells the bidding public that the items basically have no reserve and are there to be sold. The items will garner exceptional attention and active bidding, usually with very fine results.

Mixed results at Heritage’s Illustration Art Auction, August 17-18, 2010

Heritage Auctions of Dallas, TX, held an Illustration Art Auction on August 17-18, 2010, with mixed results. Prices were strong for the best known artists and fairly weak for lesser known artists.

HUGH JOSEPH WARD, The Evil Flame, Spicy Mystery Stories pulp cover, August, 1936, Heritage lot 78330, 8/17/2010

The top lot of the sale was #78330, a wonderful pulp fiction oil on canvas illustration by Hugh Joseph Ward, for the cover of Spicy Mystery Stories in August 1936, entitled
The Evil Flame. It nearly tripled its pre-sale estimate of $30-50,000, realizing $143,400.

Gil Elvgren, A Fast Takeoff (A Speedy Takeoff), 1954, Heritage lot 78097, August 17, 2010

Gil Elvgren was well represented in the sale, with superb results for many of the thirteen items. Prices ranged from $1,314.50 for a portrait of a dog to $95,600 for a painting of a sexy woman in a motorboat (lot 78097). Five of the thirteen paintings of beautiful, sexy women sold in the $47,800 – $95,600 price range.

Another big name in American illustration is Alberto Vargas. Six original paintings were offered, with results from $10,157.50 – $77,675. The top Vargas lot was #78321, a watercolor on board Esquire calendar illustration of a Varga Girl, February, 1946. It sold for $77,675, against a pre-sale estimate of $20-30,000, 2½ times the high estimate.

There were also bargains to be had. Almost half of all the lots offered (352 out of 723) sold for less than $1,000.

You can buy some of Lee Marvin’s personal items at Julia’s Auction on August 27, 2010

Remember Lee Marvin, winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for Cat Ballou in 1965? Marvin was the tough guy in many movies, of which “The Dirty Dozen” is probably his most famous. His widow, Pamela Marvin, has decided to sell many of his personal items at auction, including awards, scripts, movie posters, clothing and gear from his favorite sport, fishing.

James D. Julia, Inc. will hold its annual summer sale in Fairfield, ME, August 25-27, 2010. The sale is very large with an eclectic mix of paintings, furniture, silver and decorative objects. On the final day, approximately sixty lots of Marvin’s items will conclude the sale. The lot with the highest estimate is the Best Actor Award from the Foreign Press Association for Cat Ballou in 1965. Marvin’s Academy award for the same film will not be sold at auction as the Academy requires modern winners (post 1950) to sign an agreement that does not permit them to sell the Oscar to anyone but the Academy, and then for $1.

The Marvin items are a diverse grouping, with some very interesting items. Lot #3418 contains three of Marvin’s US Passports from the 1970s and 1980s ($500-1,500). Another, #3428, includes ten handwritten and typed letters from famous people, including invitations to the White House and a note from the Duke & Dutchess of Argyll ($3-500). Lot #3421 contains three movie posters from films in which he starred ($3-500). How about some of the suits and coats he wore in various movies? You can buy those too.

Many of the lots in the sale are estimated well below $1,000, so if you’re ever wanted to own a piece of Hollywood history, here’s your opportunity.

Remember Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger? Well, you just missed buying him!

I’m old enough to remember the Roy Rogers Show on Saturday mornings in the 1950s. It was a great show for kids. I enjoyed listening to Roy and Dale (Evans) singing “Happy Trails To You” to end their show each week. And don’t forget Roy Rogers’ trusty steed, Trigger. Well, guess what? You could have bought the taxidermic remains of Trigger at Christie’s New York sale of the Roy Rogers & Dale Evans Museum Collection on July 14-15, 2010. Sounds awfully creepy to me. Do you know anyone who has had his favorite dog or cat stuffed by a taxidermist and put on display in his or her home? I certainly don’t. I’m sure it’s been done, but by nobody I want to be close friends with.

Back to the auction. Trigger was lot 38 and estimated to sell for $100,000-200,000. The final price was $266,500, exceeding the high estimate and proving that some people were not as creeped out as I was. I wouldn’t have taken him home if they gave him to me for free.

Roy Rogers' show saddle by Edward Bohlin, Christie's New York, lot 37, July 14, 2010

The top lot of the sale was the previous lot, #37, Roy Rogers’ saddle, custom-made by Edward Bohlin, at a price of almost $1,000 in the early 1940s. Roy posed with this saddle for many famous photographs, including some shots in front of the Alamo to help sell war bonds. It carried a pre-sale estimate of $100,000-150,000 and more than doubled the high estimate, realizing $386,500.

Other lots that did very well were Roy’s personal Pontiac Bonneville ($254,500) and another Bohlin saddle (for Trigger, Jr., $242,500). And to continue the creepiness, you could have also bought his dog, Bullet, for $35,000, Trigger, Jr. for $18,750, and another horse, Buttermilk, for $25,000. Close to fifty lots sold for under $1,000, starting with a group of autographed golf memorabilia that sold for $313.

Christie’s New York held another of their Interior sales on July 22, 2010, with some noteworthy results for French cameo glass.

The French cameo glass section of the sale began with lot 204 and ended with lot 236. A nice selection of Daum Nancy and Emile Galle glass passed the block during that time. The top lot of the group was #217, a Daum Nancy winter scenic footed bowl, estimated to sell for $1,500-2,000. It sold for 10 times the high estimate for the extraordinary price of $20,000. It was a hair taller than 3″ and in my opinion should have sold in the $3-4,000 range.

A larger 9½” Daum Nancy winter scenic vase, lot 216, was the second highest lot of the French cameo glass. It was estimated to sell for $2-3,000 and sold for $18,750, again many times the high estimate.

Another superb price was achieved by lot 225, a Daum Nancy floral vase with purple bellflowers. It sold for over 8 times the high estimate of $1,800, realizing $15,000.

Gallé vases also performed well, but not as well as Daum. The top Gallé lot of the sale was #207. Estimated at $2-3,000, it sold for $8,125, almost three times the high estimate.

You could have bought a piece of history at Sotheby’s New York sale of the Mark Twain Collection, June 17, 2010

Sotheby’s New York sold the Mark Twain Collection of original letters, manuscripts and photographs, as part of a larger sale of the James S. Copley Library, June 17, 2010. The Mark Twain Collection consisted of about 200 items, valued pre-sale at approximately $1 million and realizing $1,367,268.

The top item of the sale was lot 520, an unpublished 65-page manuscript, written in his own hand, and titled “A Family Sketch”. It’s a rambling narrative of his youth, including incidents and stories of people he met growing up. It carried a pre-sale estimate of $120-160,000 and sold for $242,500, including buyer’s premium. You didn’t have to be a millionaire to participate in this auction. Many Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) items sold for less than $5,000. Lot 471 was a lot of two items regarding the publication of his book, Roughing It, and sold for only $500.

If Mark Twain didn’t interest you, the rest of the Copley Library may have. Some of the historical figures represented included George Gershwin, Albert Einstein, Mohandas Gandhi, Charles Lindbergh, and Isaac Newton, to name a few. Lots ranged in price from $500 for several items, up to $68,500 for a letter by Charlotte Brontë. An amusing typewritten letter by Amelia Earhart, Sotheby’s lot 310, was estimated to sell for $2,500-3,500 and only brought $1,250.

James D. Julia, Inc. held their annual June Important Lamps and Glass Auction on June 22-23, 2010. I asked Jim to write some comments about his sale. His response appears in its entirety at the end of this blog post.

The sale was divided into many categories, some of which were soft, including Lalique, Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre, KPM plaques and French cameo glass, while others fared better, including Tiffany Studios items. Individual items excelled, even within weak categories. Many of the items that failed to reach reserve, and therefore did not sell, were a result of estimates that were too aggressive. I’ve repeated this point time after time — low estimates create interest and encourage bidding. The problem occurs when consignors insist on aggressive estimates and high reserves. What should an auctioneer do? He’s caught between a rock and a hard place. Should he accept the consignment and risk that the items won’t sell? There’s a lot of time, effort and money invested in items that don’t sell. Or should he not accept the consignment and possibly lose out on commissions? Tough choice. The correct answer depends on market conditions that change regularly. It would be wonderful for all involved if an entire auction had low estimates and no reserves. That rarely happens today, as most consignors are not willing to gamble.

Julia’s auction is located in central Maine in the town of Fairfield. It’s a bit off the beaten path, about halfway between Portland and Bangor, just off exit 133 on I-95. Jim bends over backwards to encourage bidders to make the trip to Fairfield to attend the auction in person. He understands that live, in person, bidders are more valuable to the success of an auction than phone, Internet or left bidders. Julia’s offers incentives like free hotel rooms, free dinners, and free food at the auction. Even with those incentives, the crowd averaged only about 30-40 each day. The slack was taken up mainly by interest from the phones and the Internet.

Tiffany Studios items were well represented in the sale, with the top seven lots all being Tiffany lamps. A pretty Tiffany 17″ Geranium lamp, lot #2315, was estimated conservatively at $30-40,000. As a result, there was considerable interest from many telephone bidders and the audience. A dealer, bidding on the telephone, was the winner, paying $63,250, including buyer’s premium — a result that easily exceeded the high estimate.

Lot #2020 was the second highest French cameo glass lot of the auction. It was a rare and very desirable Daum 6¼” Prairie scenic pitcher. It sold near the high end of its pre-sale estimate of $10-15,000, reaching $16,675.

For the past few weeks leading up to our auction we have been filled with pride, anticipation, and trepidation. Pride because we had been told on numerous occasions that our upcoming glass and lamp auction was probably the largest, finest and most diverse grouping of this type that has been offered at any one auction anywhere in the world for the last couple of years. Anticipation because we had a considerable amount of monetary value and thus had the potential for doing well. Trepidation because this is a different world today the economies of the world’s and the collecting fraternities of the world’s are no longer what they were three years ago. This is a buyer’s market not a seller’s market and its exceedingly difficult to predict what is going to happen. We of course knew that because this was such a high-profile auction a great number of collectors would be watching its performance. If we were successful it would bode well for our company and for the glass and lamp collecting fraternity as a whole. Healthy prices create a sense of assurance and confidence for collectors to buy. Very poor sales results would serve as a depressing factor for the collecting fraternity as a whole. It’s important to note that our auction was not a huge accumulation of modernism, art nouveau and art deco that happened to include a few highly select and rare lamps and/or glass objects (truly rare, highly important and very valuable collectibles still tend to bring very strong prices). Our auction was a true cross-section of the art glass and lamp marketplace. It consisted of objects that would normally be found in the booths or shops of leading art glass and lamp dealers throughout the world. As such, the value ranged from a few hundred dollars to a hundred thousand dollars plus and included art nouveau, 20th century American art glass, paperweights, KPM plaques, lamps of all types, miniature lamps, French and English cameo glass, Fairyland Lustre, etc.

We are proud and pleased to report that our auction was a success. Gross sales were just under $2 million and with the normal post-sale buying that takes place the week following an auction, the total gross should exceed $2 million. In addition there were some healthy prices; the most exciting of which were for desirable items that carried very realistic and/or conservative estimates. One of the most critical factors at auction in a down economy is not only the importance of quality offerings but more importantly realistic and conservative estimates. The more conservative the estimates the greater the interest in the object and the more likely it would do well when sold. Just as prices on the stock market readjust in new economies the same thing happens in collectible markets. One of the most difficult things in a down economy for an auctioneer is to try to figure out what the new market level is for various collectibles. Just because the consignor bought the object three years ago for a lot of money or because they were offered a lot of money for it four years ago or because someone sold a similar one five years ago for a lot of money, has nothing to do with the value of land in Florida, Handel lamps or G.E. stock today. The value of any object today is what the current market will bear, which in many cases is less. If G.E. stock (which used to trade at $38 but now is trading at $16) is offered at the former value of $38, it will not sell. It is no different for a Handel lamp or a KPM plaque; these things sell but only at current market value, not the old market value. Those consignors who insisted on aggressive reserves and/or high estimates in economies such as this will frequently be dismayed with the financial results. High reserves (and thus high estimates) simply disparage bidding participation and thus garner a low rate of return. Conservative estimates and reserves result in maximum participation, which in turn results in the greatest amount of the competition which therefore will result in the greatest rate of return.

English cameo included a fabulous Junior lamp in shades of red and white estimated at $15,000-$25,000, it sold for $23,000! A beautiful 8 inch English three-color cameo vase conservatively estimated at $2,000-$2,500, went out at $6325. An outstanding offering of paperweights from an old collection carried strong reserves and thus prices were spotty. A beautiful cliché honeycomb estimated at a conservative $6,500-$8,500 saw lots of activity and finally sold for $10,350. There was a terrific offering of French cameo which performed adequately; not on 2007 standards but on 2010 standards. A beautiful Daum Nancy Prairie pitcher 6-1/4 inches high estimated at $10-$15,000, sold for $16,675. A Galle étude marquetry vase 7 inches high was estimated at $8,000-$10,000 and realized $12,075.

There are always surprises at every auction which include bargain prices as well as some items which over perform. A beautiful American contemporary leaded table lamp estimated at $8,000-$10,000 sold for just under $20,000.

Tiffany perhaps was in general one of the better performers (as it usually is). A beautiful geranium table lamp with a realistic but conservative $30,000-$40,000 estimate saw lots of bidding activity and finally sold for $63,250. A nice Tiffany drop head dragonfly table lamp was estimated at $120,000 -$150,000. Based on recent sales of dragonfly lamps, this estimate was probably a little more aggressive than it should have been but the lamp still sold for just under $110,000. Another dragonfly without the drop heads was estimated at $55,000-$65,000 and sold for $61,000. A great Tiffany Studios decorated senior floor lamp base estimated at $40,000-$60,000, finally sold for $47,150.

The total low estimate of everything sold in this two-day sale was $1,596,150 but the total realized including buyers premium was $1,883,095 or a total of $286,945 more than low estimate.

One last point about the collectibles fraternity today is that it doesn’t matter if you collect Galle, Tiffany lamps, rare toys, fine art or furniture; an important point to remember is this is a buyers’ market. Consequently, there are consistently great buys available at auctions, shows, and shops. This is the best time in a collector’s life to be adding to their collection. During a sellers market as we’ve experienced for a number of years there is so much competition that there are rarely any good buys. But in a buyers’ market, prices tend to be lower and there are consistently bargains available. This is a fabulous time for collectors to be expanding their collection. Smart buyers in the stock market such as Warren Buffett take advantage of buyers markets to expand their holdings. Smart collectors take advantage of buyers markets to expand their collections!

Good results at Christie’s Important 20th Century Decorative Art & Design sale in New York, June 17, 2010

June is 20th Century Decorative Arts Month, or so I’ve named it. Every June (and December), it seems every major (and minor) auction house has a 20th Century Decorative Arts sale. The June sales usually don’t have as powerful a selection as the December sales, but it’s still quite good. The June sale at Sotheby’s was strong, as I reported in my last blog entry. The overall results of the Christie’s sale the following day were good, with total sales of $5,853,100, but the Tiffany lamp sales were weaker, except for the best examples. Sotheby’s selection of Tiffany lamps was more select than Christie’s and the results showed. This time around, collectors were looking for superior examples and those excelled. Bargains were to be had for some of the less expensive lamps. For the most part, under $50,000 lamps suffered, while the over $100,000 lamps did well.

The top lot of Christie’s sale was #97, an Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann burl walnut and ivory commode, circa 1925. Estimated to sell for $150,000-200,000, it quadrupled the low estimate to sell for $614,500, including buyer’s premium.

A beautiful Tiffany Studios Grape chandelier, lot #45, was the second highest lot of the sale. It more than doubled the low estimate, selling for $398,500, against an estimate of $150,000-200,000. It continued the trend of strong results for the best examples.

At the other end of the spectrum, there were bargains to be had. Lot #29 was a 16″ diameter Tiffany Studios Linenfold table lamp. It was estimated very conservatively at $8-12,000 and sold for $9,375, including buyer’s premium, slightly below the low estimate. At retail, the lamp is estimated to sell for $15-20,000.
