Some results from Doyle New York’s Belle Epoque auction, June 5, 2013

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Doyle New York held its Belle Epoque auction yesterday, June 5, 2013. There weren’t many exciting lots, so the results were unremarkable.

Tiffany Studios 12-light lily table lamp, Doyle lot #512

Tiffany Studios 12-light lily table lamp, Doyle lot #512

Top lot in the art glass and lamps section of the sale went to #512, a Tiffany Studios 12-light lily lamp, which sold for $25,000, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-sale estimate of $12,000-18,000. The price was strong, considering that four of the shades were reproduction and one of the shades was broken and glued. In addition, the switch was replaced, several of the sockets were replaced, several arms were loose and the lamp needed rewiring. It was not in “ready for primetime” shape. My guess is it sold to a dealer who has the wherewithal to put it back into tiptop shape. The patina was excellent, so it will be a primo lamp when it’s ready.

Monumental Galle dragonfly vase, Doyle lot #539.

Monumental Galle dragonfly vase, Doyle lot #539.

Top lot of the French cameo glass section of the sale went to #539, a huge, 23¼”, Galle dragonfly vase. It sold within the estimate to reach $10,000, including buyer’s premium. Personally I didn’t bid aggressively because the size was too large for me, even though the subject matter was very good. I find it difficult to sell very large vases, as there are fewer collectors who have the room to display them.

Daum Nancy winter scenic table lamp, Doyle lot #544

Daum Nancy winter scenic table lamp, Doyle lot #544

Lot #544 was interesting. It was a very desirable Daum Nancy winter scenic table lamp. Ordinarily I would have been all over it, but there was significant damage to the lower rim of the shade (which you can see in the photo, on the right). I didn’t bid at all because of the problems. That didn’t stop other buyers who bid the lamp to $8,125, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-sale estimate of $5,000 – $7,000.

No shows until late July, when we will be in Denver. A fellow dealer convinced me to try the show again. She said the new promoters are good and filled the hall with buyers the last time, so we’ll give it one more shot. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to call or write if you would like to buy, sell or trade.

The almost complete results for The Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair, April 26-29, 2013

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

We received many compliments

We received many compliments

It’s Sunday afternoon as I write this blog. The show continues today until 6 PM, and then finishes tomorrow, Monday, at 3 PM. Monday is usually a complete washout, so I don’t see any reason to delay my post until Tuesday. If anything significant happens on Monday, you’ll hear about it on Thursday.

The show started last Thursday with a very well attended preview party. Amazingly, business was good at the party, but only to my existing clients. If there were no party, they would have made the same purchases the next day. Attendance was fairly light on Friday, as the party stole much of the thunder of opening day. It continued only at a moderate pace for the entire show.

Personally, my show went well, but not as I would have guessed. My best client, who I had hoped would be a substantial buyer, bought nothing. Luckily, other clients stepped up to the plate, so we’re pleased with our results. As expected, most of the action was in French glass and Tiffany lamps and glass.

In asking around to a handful of dealers, I heard the following comments. An Art Nouveau dealer, new to the show, was very pleased with his results and is looking forward to next year’s show, while a Tiffany dealer, not new to the show, reported disappointing results. A majolica dealer said she had a good show. Among general dealers, one was very happy and another unhappy. A dealer in general merchandise and jewelry said he brought less this year, but sold more jewelry. An art dealer told he made only two sales and broke even. A silver dealer was pleased that his results were much better than last year, and finally a furniture/Americana dealer was very unhappy with his results. Overall I heard more good reports than bad.

Many of the dealers at the show are up in arms about the proposed Navy Pier show by the Palm Beach Show Group. PBSG intends to hold a show the same weekend as the April, 2014, Merchandise Mart show. Not sure why PBSG wants to do that, as there isn’t enough buying power in Chicago to support two major antique shows at the same time. We’ll see what shakes out.

No shows until late July, but we’re still very much in business. Please don’t hesitate to call or write. We’re always interested in buying, selling or trading.

It’s been six months since we last exhibited in Chicago. We love the city and have many friends, so we’re excited to be coming back this week to exhibit at two shows, back to back. The first, the Chicago Botanic Garden Antiques and Garden Fair, starts setting up on Wednesday and opens to the public on Friday, at 10 AM. It continues until Sunday, April 21st, at 5 PM. It’s located at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, in the beautiful village of Glencoe.

It seems a little strange to exhibit at a Garden Fair, but I’ve been assured that there are enough antiques dealers to call it an “Antiques and Garden Fair”. I hope it works out, especially because the Arlington Racetrack Antiques Show was cancelled. This show could be the perfect replacement. Stella Show Management always does a good job, so we’re confident the show well be well run. Now all we need is for the public to do their part. It would be our pleasure to make the show a permanent addition to our schedule. Click here for more information about the show.

We’ve been busy lately, buying up a storm for our upcoming shows in the Greater Chicago area, starting next week. Some of our superb purchases came from a very successful European buying trip last week. We’ve pumped up our already fine collection of Tiffany glass and lamps and French cameo glass. I photographed all of our newest treasures, but it’s time-consuming to put them on my website, so they’ll get added day by day. Please check frequently for additions. New additions of Gallé, Daum and Argy-Rousseau glass will be on the site soon, including a Gallé hyacinth blownout vase with exceptional color. I was offered four different Gallé hyacinth blownout vases and chose to purchase only this one, because it was hands-down the best. Also coming are Gallé scenic and floral vases, Daum spider web vases and a fine Argy-Rousseau pate-de-verre geometric vase.

Know your French Cameo Glass flowers!

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

I’ve addressed this topic in a previous blog post, but I thought it relevant enough to address again.

An important Daum Nancy lamp with violets

An important Daum Nancy lamp with violets

When I first started dealing in French cameo glass almost forty years ago, I referred to the vases as having red flowers or blue flowers, for example. Then a Japanese client asked me “What flower”? I was perplexed. I clearly remember thinking that no one had ever asked me that question before. What difference did it make? Apparently a big difference.

Fine, rare Gallé chrysanthemum blownout vase

Fine, rare Gallé chrysanthemum blownout vase

Japanese buyers virtually took over the French cameo glass market in the late 1980s. They had very specific likes and dislikes and were willing to put their money where their mouths were. Violets were so desirable that a serious premium was put on the vases. It still exists today, even though most of the buyers are not Japanese. Chrysanthemums were flowers for Japanese funerals, so it was very difficult to sell a vase with chrysanthemums, especially white or yellow, to a Japanese buyer. Americans have no such aversion to chrysanthemums, in fact quite the opposite, making it easy to sell a vase in the US.

A lovely Gallé red magnolia vase

So which are the best flowers? Violets, roses, and magnolias, to name a few. Generic-looking flowers, tiny flowers, tobacco flowers and any flowers with weak colors are the worst.

Great color on this Daum bottle with fuchsia flowers

Great color on this Daum bottle with fuchsia flowers

Collectors like color, so good color and contrast are important. Red, blue, purple, and pink are desirable colors. Brown, green, and orange are less desirable, unless strong. Muted color is not an asset. These are observations from a dealer’s point of view — I know what sells and what doesn’t. Most people can agree when they see a pretty vase. If you like it, chances are others will too. That’s the one you should buy.

Excellent results for Tiffany Studios and French cameo glass at Cottone Auctions, March 23, 2013

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Cottone Auctions held a big, diverse, 861-lot sale March 22-23, 2013, with very successful results. Included in the sale were some excellent, fresh-to-the-market lamps and art glass.

Fine Tiffany Studios Pomegranate table lamp, Cottone lot #496

Fine Tiffany Studios Pomegranate table lamp, Cottone lot #496

Lot #496 was a Tiffany Studios Pomegranate table lamp, which usually makes everyone yawn. This example, however, was special, with great glass — heavily mottled and dichroic (color-changing from unlit to lit). It easily exceeded its pre-sale estimate of $8,000 – $12,000, to sell for $20,125, including buyer’s premium.

Tiffany Favrile paperweight vase, Cottone lot #500

Tiffany Favrile paperweight vase, Cottone lot #500

The best Tiffany Favrile vase in the sale was a vivid paperweight, 11½” tall. It handily exceeded its estimate of $5,000 – $8,000, to sell for $11,960.

Gallé fire-polished vase, Cottone lot #501

Gallé fire-polished vase, Cottone lot #501

The best French cameo glass vase in the sale was an unusual fire-polished, footed Gallé vase, with an interesting bulbous knop above the foot. It sold for $8,510, toward the high end of the pre-sale estimate of $5,000 – $8,000.

As any good auction house should, Cottone estimated most lots very conservatively. That should be the golden rule for auction houses, as it creates a virtuous circle. 1. The public know the items are there to be sold. 2. Everyone thinks they’re in the game, so they participate. 3. The results are strong, so the high estimate is often exceeded. 4. Everyone is happy, including the buyer, the seller and the auction house. How can you beat that?

The fantastic NYC Pier Antiques Show opens to the public this coming Saturday, March 16th, at 10 AM and continues until Sunday, March 17th, at 6 PM. This is an exciting show, with an incredibly diverse group of dealers. There will be $25 items, as well as $100,000 items, from vintage clothing, jewelry, collectibles, silver, Asian, and of course, the best French and American art glass and lamps.

The line was long before the start of a previous Pier show

The show is only two days long, so it’s more action-packed than most longer shows. People have to make up their minds quickly or risk losing the items they were considering. I’m always surprised (and pleased) with the distance attendees travel to visit the show. Japanese buyers attend regularly, as well as Europeans, Canadians, and of course, Americans from many states. Not many shows are worth the trip from almost anywhere, but this one is. My booth is near the entrance, so you can’t miss me. Please stop in and introduce yourself.

Galle used mold-blowing to produce some great vases

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

It’s time for a change of pace from the usual posts about shows and auctions. Today’s post is informational on the topic of mold-blowing of French cameo glass. Blowing out the flower or animal makes the decoration three-dimensional and therefore more realistic. The technique raises the level of sophistication, making blownout vases much more desirable and valuable than those that are not mold-blown.

Mold-blown vases are sometimes called blownout vases or soufflé vases, all interchangeable terms. Gallé produced most of the known examples, while Daum produced a few. It’s possible other companies used the technique, but I’m not aware of any examples. My guess is that Gallé produced about 40-50 different models.

Two variations of Gallé's clematis blownout vase

Two variations of Gallé’s clematis blownout vase

The shape doesn’t change with different examples of the same model, but the colors can be quite variable. For instance, the clematis blownout vase may have blue flowers or red flowers (or other colors). After the vase was formed in a mold, it was covered with different layers of colored glass, at the discretion of the glassblower. Then when it was cold, hydroflouric acid was used to etch the final design.

Galle white and brown Elephant mold-blown vases

Galle white and brown Elephant mold-blown vases

Elephant blownout vases are rare and valuable. They come in two different models — the brown elephant with trees and the white elephant without.

Very rare Gallé mold-blown chandelier with fruit decoration

Very rare Gallé mold-blown chandelier with fruit decoration

The rarest example I’ve ever seen wasn’t even a vase, but a chandelier with fruit decoration. I once saw one with a blownout squirrel, but I can’t remember if this was the same one. Probably not, as that one would have had acorns or something similar. It would be nice to find one of them today.

If you collect French Cameo Glass, consider adding blownout vases to your collection. Well-chosen examples will benefit every collection. I’ve got a couple for sale at the moment, with three great examples arriving this week. Check with me for specifics.

We decided to exhibit in Palm Springs, CA, this year. We had a choice of three shows that run the same week — one in Palm Beach, FL, one in Asheville, NC, and the one we chose, in Palm Springs, CA. We exhibited previously in Palm Beach and Asheville, both with mixed results. So we gambled that a show in Palm Springs might be the right choice. Don’t have a clue if it will go well or not, so tune in on Tuesday for the results. If the results are fair to moderate, we won’t be back, as the expenses to cross the country are considerable. If the show goes really well, we’ll be back. If you’re from Southern California, you can directly affect our decision. Please visit the show and consider a purchase. I’d much prefer to write a glowing review, than not.

The results of the Original Miami Beach Antique Show, January 31 – February 4, 2013

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday. There will not be a Thursday post this week, as we’re on vacation. Please visit again on Monday.

Attendance was good on Friday afternoon

Attendance was good on Friday afternoon

The Original Miami Beach Antique Show ended on February 4, 2013, after a fairly successful run of five days. In asking around, most dealers replied “OK”, when asked “How was your show?”. One dealer from the West Coast told me “great”, but he was the only one. The consensus of the dealers I spoke to was good, but not exceptional. The overall impression I got was the results were acceptable, but nothing to write home about.

Fabulous Daum Nancy wheel-carved poppy jar

Fabulous Daum Nancy wheel-carved poppy jar, sold at the show

Personally, business was significantly better than the last couple of years. French glass was at the forefront of sales, with Tiffany glass just behind. Lamps were soft at the entire show. There were enough Tiffany lamps to choke an elephant — just too many for the number of buyers. Anyone who came to the show looking for an authentic Tiffany Studios lamp had a bewildering selection to choose from.

Attendance was good on Saturday, but sales weren't

Attendance was good on Saturday, but sales weren’t

Attendance was good most days, with the best sales happening on opening day, as expected. After all, the most motivated buyers come the first day. Business on the second day was good too, but then tailed off as the stragglers wandered in over the weekend. Monday was hit or miss for most dealers (and a hit for me).

Next year will be interesting, because the promoters of the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show purchased the Miami National Antiques Show (The Airport Show). Next year they will be promoting both shows, back to back. We’ll exhibit at the Airport Show one more time. If the new promoters can get more buyers through the door, we’ll do it again. If not, unfortunately we’ll be finished with the show.

The Palm Springs Modernism Show will run from February 16-18, 2013

The Palm Springs Modernism Show will run from February 16-18, 2013

Now we get to rest for a week and then on to California to exhibit at the Palm Springs Modernism Show for the first time. We haven’t had good luck in California in recent years, so we’re hoping the show will be good. If it isn’t, we’ll give up the entire state. That would be a shame, but we can’t afford to exhibit at shows where the buyers don’t show up. May I suggest that you come visit us? The dates for the show are February 16-18, at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

I will be posting videos on YouTube of my lecture on French Cameo Glass to the Metropolitan Glass Club. I need some time to edit the videos. When they’re ready, I’ll put the link on my website and here in my blog.
