What a difference a day makes!

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Tiffany Studios 22″ diameter Greek Key table lamp, Cottone lot #61

Tiffany Studios 22″ diameter Greek Key floor lamp, Sotheby’s lot #31

Two Tiffany Studios 22″ diameter Greek Key table lamps sold within one week, one at Cottone’s in upstate New York on March 25th and the other at Sotheby’s in New York City on March 29th. What a difference a day makes!

Cottone sold lot #61 for $89,125, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-sale estimate of $25,000 – $35,000, while Sotheby’s sold lot #31 for $47,500, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-sale estimate of $20,000 — $30,000. So how do you explain that? Cottone’s lamp had excellent orange mottled glass while Sotheby’s lamp had more common green striated glass with light mottling. Cottone’s was a table lamp, while Sotheby’s was a floor lamp, but Cottone’s sold for almost twice as much.

I’m sure those factors played a role, but there’s more. Cottone’s lamp was a big fish in a small pond, while Sotheby’s was the opposite. That makes a difference. Two bidders with big egos and fat wallets duked it out at Cottone’s while the fighting at Sotheby’s was accompanied by a yawn. Every good auction result requires a bidder and an underbidder. Congrats to Cottone for corralling the right players.

We haven’t exhibited in the greater Detroit area in over 10 years, but at the encouragement of a fellow dealer, we’ve decided to give it another shot. I enjoyed doing the show years ago and hope that business is good so we can add it to our regular schedule. The show opens with a preview party on Friday, April 21st and continues until Sunday, April 23rd at 5 PM.

I recently listed over 15 new items on my website and I’ll be listing more in the near future. Please check my site as often as you can.

Tiffany Studios lamps were alive and well at Cottone Auctions Art, Antiques & Modern Design sale, March 25, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Cottone Auctions, Geneseo, NY, held its Art, Antiques & Modern Design sale on March 25, 2017. Included in the sale were several good Tiffany Studios lamps, which performed very well.

Tiffany Studios Dragonfly table lamp, Cottone lot #56

The first of the group, lot #56, was a very nice quality 20″ diameter Dragonfly with beautiful mottled glass and green jeweled eyes. Estimated to sell for $40,000 – $60,000, it sold for a very healthy $80,500, including buyer’s premium.

Tiffany Studios Greek Key table lamp, Cottone lot #61

Much more surprising than the result for the Dragonfly was the result for lot #61, a 22″ diameter Greek Key lamp with superior mottled glass. It sold for an astonishing $89,125, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-sale estimate of $25,000 – $35,000. There was no way I could have predicted that.

More modest results were obtained by other lamps, including a Tiffany Studios Daffodil chandelier @ $51,750. The group also included lamps by Duffner & Kimberly, Handel and Wilkinson. For the complete results, click here.

Cottone Auctions offered Tiffany Studios lamps for sale on March 19, 2016

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Cottone Auctions held a 30 Year Anniversary Fine Art & Antique Auction on Mar 19, 2016. Included in the sale were four Tiffany Studios leaded lamps.

Tiffany Studios 20″ diameter Daffodil table lamp, Cottone lot #260

Our next show is only two weeks away. We’ll be in Glencoe, IL, for the Garden, Antique & Design Show, at the Chicago Botanic Garden, starting April 15th. It’s a beautiful show, with both antiques and gardening, that you’ll absolutely enjoy. We only have two remaining shows in the greater Chicago area, so come and say hi!

If you’re selling, please let me know. If you have what I’m looking for, I’m paying the highest prices. My decisions are quick and my payments just as quick. Just snap a photo and email it to me.

I always strive to offer the finest objects for sale on my website and at every show. I will continue to list more as often as possible. Some good results at Cottone’s Fine Art & Antique auction, September 26-27, 2014

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Tiffany Studios Angel of Resurrection window, Cottone lot #504

Tiffany Studios Angel of Resurrection window, Cottone lot #504

Cottone’s held their Fine Art & Antique auction this past weekend, September 26-27, 2014, with some good results. Top lot of the sale was a Tiffany Studios memorial window, Angel of Resurrection from the Church of the Redeemer in upstate Newark, NY. It exceeded its high estimate of $60,000 to realize $71,300, including buyer’s premium.

Tiffany Studios Poppy table lamp, Cottone lot #502

Tiffany Studios Poppy table lamp, Cottone lot #502

The second highest lot of the sale was another Tiffany Studios item – a 17″ diameter Poppy table lamp. Fresh to the market, the estimate seemed fair, $60,000-$80,000, especially with an important blownout base. To my surprise, it sold for the low estimate of $60,000, plus buyer’s premium ($69,000). Sounded like a deal to me.

Martin Brothers bird, Cottone lot #539

Martin Brothers bird, Cottone lot #539

Martin Brothers birds continued on a decade’s-long flight up. A 10″ bird with lots of character (and some damage) soared past its pre-sale estimate of $7,000-$10,000 to realize $60,950.

There were bargains to be had, but unfortunately I was asleep at the switch. I was so preoccupied with the antique show this past weekend that the auction totally slipped my mind. Too bad, because I could have bought some fine items at reasonable prices. For the complete results of the sale, click here.

No shows until November, when we have four in a row. We’ll start in New Jersey at the Morristown Armory, then travel to Chicago for the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show, followed by the Kansas City Antiques Expo, ending up back at the Pier in NYC for the usual November show. Remember to check my website for the latest items and keep reading my blog. We’ll spend a lot of time finding some great new items for our November circuit.

Excellent results for Tiffany Studios and French cameo glass at Cottone Auctions, March 23, 2013

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Cottone Auctions held a big, diverse, 861-lot sale March 22-23, 2013, with very successful results. Included in the sale were some excellent, fresh-to-the-market lamps and art glass.

Fine Tiffany Studios Pomegranate table lamp, Cottone lot #496

Fine Tiffany Studios Pomegranate table lamp, Cottone lot #496

Lot #496 was a Tiffany Studios Pomegranate table lamp, which usually makes everyone yawn. This example, however, was special, with great glass — heavily mottled and dichroic (color-changing from unlit to lit). It easily exceeded its pre-sale estimate of $8,000 – $12,000, to sell for $20,125, including buyer’s premium.

Tiffany Favrile paperweight vase, Cottone lot #500

Tiffany Favrile paperweight vase, Cottone lot #500

The best Tiffany Favrile vase in the sale was a vivid paperweight, 11½” tall. It handily exceeded its estimate of $5,000 – $8,000, to sell for $11,960.

Gallé fire-polished vase, Cottone lot #501

Gallé fire-polished vase, Cottone lot #501

The best French cameo glass vase in the sale was an unusual fire-polished, footed Gallé vase, with an interesting bulbous knop above the foot. It sold for $8,510, toward the high end of the pre-sale estimate of $5,000 – $8,000.

As any good auction house should, Cottone estimated most lots very conservatively. That should be the golden rule for auction houses, as it creates a virtuous circle. 1. The public know the items are there to be sold. 2. Everyone thinks they’re in the game, so they participate. 3. The results are strong, so the high estimate is often exceeded. 4. Everyone is happy, including the buyer, the seller and the auction house. How can you beat that?

chicago-botanic-garden-3-2013

Our show schedule in April begins with the Chicago Antiques & Garden Fair at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe, IL. It will be our first time there. Hopefully the show will be good for us, so we can make it a regular show on our schedule. We have many clients in the greater Chicago area, so if a show fails, we need a replacement. We’re bringing an impressive group of items that will be shown for the first time in Chicago, including Tiffany lamps and glass and French cameo glass by Gallé and Daum. Please visit us at the show. It opens to the public on Friday, April 19th, at 10 AM, and continues until Sunday, April 21st, at 5 PM. Click here for more information about the show.
