The market for Tiffany Studios lamps and glass is alive and well

I am now publishing once a week, on Monday.

December is Design month, with every major and not-so-major auction house in the entire world holding a Design sale. My desk gets piled high with all the catalogs. It’s tough to keep track, but trends do appear. The most obvious is that the market for Tiffany Studios’ lamps, glass and objects is alive and well. Today I’ll only focus on the recent sale at Sotheby’s New York. I’ll write about other sales in the weeks to come.

Sotheby’s held a Dreaming in Glass: Masterworks by Tiffany and La Farge
sale on December 12, 2018, with total sales of $9,060,000. The majority of the 48 lots sold above their high estimates, with 100% selling.

Tiffany Trumpet Creeper table lamp, Sotheby’s lot #327

The top banana of the sale was lot #327, an important Trumper Creeper table lamp. It almost doubled its high estimate of $1,200,000, realizing $2,295,000, including buyer’s premium.

Tiffany Cypriote vase, Sotheby’s lot #319

Lot #319 was the top lot of the glass vases. It sold for $87,500, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-sale estimate of $30,000 – $50,000. The paperweight-technique vase had a thin layer of Cypriote decoration over clear glass.

John LaFarge window Dawn Comes on the Edge of Night

The one lot in the sale by John LaFarge was an important window entitled Dawn Comes on the Edge of Night. It sold near its high estimate of $700,000, realizing $765,000, including buyer’s premium.

No shows until January 18, 2019, when we’ll exhibit at the Miami Antiques + Art + Design Show at the Miami Airport Convention Center (MACC). It precedes the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show.

I just listed some of the new items on my website and will list more every week. Click Philip Chasen Antiques to take a look. I will make every effort to actively list new items as often as time permits. I always strive to offer the finest objects for sale on my website and at every show. There are many items for sale, sold items with prices and free lessons about glass and lamps. And remember to keep reading my blog.

Tiffany Studios lamps were alive and well at Cottone Auctions Art, Antiques & Modern Design sale, March 25, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Cottone Auctions, Geneseo, NY, held its Art, Antiques & Modern Design sale on March 25, 2017. Included in the sale were several good Tiffany Studios lamps, which performed very well.

Tiffany Studios Dragonfly table lamp, Cottone lot #56

The first of the group, lot #56, was a very nice quality 20″ diameter Dragonfly with beautiful mottled glass and green jeweled eyes. Estimated to sell for $40,000 – $60,000, it sold for a very healthy $80,500, including buyer’s premium.

Tiffany Studios Greek Key table lamp, Cottone lot #61

Much more surprising than the result for the Dragonfly was the result for lot #61, a 22″ diameter Greek Key lamp with superior mottled glass. It sold for an astonishing $89,125, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-sale estimate of $25,000 – $35,000. There was no way I could have predicted that.

More modest results were obtained by other lamps, including a Tiffany Studios Daffodil chandelier @ $51,750. The group also included lamps by Duffner & Kimberly, Handel and Wilkinson. For the complete results, click here.

We haven’t exhibited in the greater Detroit area in over 10 years, but at the encouragement of a fellow dealer, we’ve decided to give it another shot. I enjoyed doing the show years ago and hope that business is good so we can add it to our regular schedule. The show opens with a preview party on Friday, April 21st and continues until Sunday, April 23rd at 5 PM.

I recently listed about 15 new items on my website and I’ll be listing more in the near future. Please check my site as often as you can.

We’re still very much in business between shows, so please don’t hesitate to email or call. I always strive to offer the finest objects for sale on my website and at every show. The Arlington Racetrack Antiques Show opens this Friday, October 14, 2011

I have less time to write about the interesting things happening in the antiques world since the fall shows started, so I am posting new blog entries once or twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. If you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Rare Galle box with 2 dragonflies

The Arlington Park Racetrack Antiques Show opens this Friday, October 14th at 11:00 AM and runs until 5:00 PM on Sunday, October 16th. The show is not as big as it once was, but that’s the case for most shows nowadays. The quality is still very good and worth a trip from anywhere in the Greater Chicago area.

Tiffany 14 inch diameter Dragonfly table lamp with great color

We went on a successful buying trip to France in early September, so we have some very fine French cameo glass by Daum and Gallé that is fresh to the market. Additionally, we were able to purchase a small collection of Tiffany lamps, so we’ll have some new ones that you haven’t seen before. Sales of Tiffany lamps have been strong in the last few weeks, so I’m glad to be able to offer some fresh ones.

The promoter of the show, Shawn Hastings, has been quite ill for a month now. His wife and staff will be running the show. Let’s all pray for a speedy and full recovery for him.

Very fine color on this beautiful and rare Galle blue floral vase

In the meantime, check the listings on my website, which I will update as often as I can. I’ll be photographing all my new Gallé and Daum purchases and listing them on my website. Recently I listed quite a few Tiffany, Handel and Pairpoint lamps and some very rare Louis Icart etchings including Melody Hour and Mardi Gras. There are also several fine Daum vases; a Daum lamp; several Galle vases; and several more Tiffany Favrile vases. Coming soon will be several wonderful European ceramic items by Clement Massier, Zsolnay and Amphora. Here’s the link. chasenantiques.com
