The Chicago Botanic Garden Antiques and Garden Fair opens this Friday, April 19, 2013

It’s been six months since we last exhibited in Chicago. We love the city and have many friends, so we’re excited to be coming back this week to exhibit at two shows, back to back. The first, the Chicago Botanic Garden Antiques and Garden Fair, starts setting up on Wednesday and opens to the public on Friday, at 10 AM. It continues until Sunday, April 21st, at 5 PM. It’s located at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, in the beautiful village of Glencoe.

It seems a little strange to exhibit at a Garden Fair, but I’ve been assured that there are enough antiques dealers to call it an “Antiques and Garden Fair”. I hope it works out, especially because the Arlington Racetrack Antiques Show was cancelled. This show could be the perfect replacement. Stella Show Management always does a good job, so we’re confident the show well be well run. Now all we need is for the public to do their part. We’ve been busy lately, buying up a storm for our upcoming shows in the Greater Chicago area, starting next week. Some of our superb purchases came from a very successful European buying trip last week. We’ve pumped up our already fine collection of Tiffany glass and lamps and French cameo glass. I photographed all of our newest treasures, but it’s time-consuming to put them on my website, so they’ll get added day by day. Please check frequently for additions. Killer Gallé hyacinth blownout vase

New additions of Gallé, Daum and Argy-Rousseau glass will be on the site soon, including a Gallé hyacinth blownout vase with exceptional color. I was offered four different Gallé hyacinth blownout vases and chose to purchase only this one, because it was hands-down the best. Also coming are Gallé scenic and floral vases, Daum spider web vases and a fine Argy-Rousseau pate-de-verre geometric vase.

Tiffany Favrile glass vases are well-represented in the newest selection. Two of them are deep blue with green hearts and vines decoration — both small and wonderful. Several green decorated Favrile vases are also in the newest group.

Excellent results for Tiffany Studios and French cameo glass at Cottone Auctions, March 23, 2013

Cottone Auctions held a big, diverse, 861-lot sale March 22-23, 2013, with very successful results. Included in the sale were some excellent, fresh-to-the-market lamps and art glass.

Fine Tiffany Studios Pomegranate table lamp, Cottone lot #496

Lot #496 was a Tiffany Studios Pomegranate table lamp, which usually makes everyone yawn. This example, however, was special, with great glass — heavily mottled and dichroic (color-changing from unlit to lit). It easily exceeded its pre-sale estimate of $8,000 – $12,000, to sell for $20,125, including buyer’s premium.

Tiffany Favrile paperweight vase, Cottone lot #500

The best Tiffany Favrile vase in the sale was a vivid paperweight, 11½” tall. It handily exceeded its estimate of $5,000 – $8,000, to sell for $11,960.

Gallé fire-polished vase, Cottone lot #501

The best French cameo glass vase in the sale was an unusual fire-polished, footed Gallé vase, with an interesting bulbous knop above the foot. It sold for $8,510, toward the high end of the pre-sale estimate of $5,000 – $8,000.

As any good auction house should, Cottone estimated most lots very conservatively. That should be the golden rule for auction houses, as it creates a virtuous circle. 1. The public know the items are there to be sold. 2. Everyone thinks they’re in the game, so they participate. 3. The results are strong, so the high estimate is often exceeded. 4. Everyone is happy, including the buyer, the seller and the auction house. How can you beat that?

The NYC Pier Antiques Show opens to the public this Saturday, March 15, 2013

The fantastic NYC Pier Antiques Show opens to the public this coming Saturday, March 16th, at 10 AM and continues until Sunday, March 17th, at 6 PM. This is an exciting show, with an incredibly diverse group of dealers. There will be $25 items, as well as $100,000 items, from vintage clothing, jewelry, collectibles, silver, Asian, and of course, the best French and American art glass and lamps.

The show is only two days long, so it’s more action-packed than most longer shows. People have to make up their minds quickly or risk losing the items they were considering. I’m always surprised (and pleased) with the distance attendees travel to visit the show. Japanese buyers attend regularly, as well as Europeans, Canadians, and of course, Americans from many states. Not many shows are worth the trip from almost anywhere, but this one is. My booth is near the entrance, so you can’t miss me. Please stop in and introduce yourself.

Solid results for Tiffany Studios items at Sotheby’s 20th Century Design sale, March 6, 2013

Sotheby’s held a 20th Century Design sale on March 6, 2013, with very good results for Tiffany Studios lamps, glass and desk sets. The sale totaled over $3.6 million, led by a strange Ron Arad experimental “Rietveld Chair” from 1996, which sold for $194,500. Since I don’t know understand why, I’ll stick to a subject I do know about, namely Tiffany Studios.

Fine Tiffany Studios Dragonfly table lamp, Sotheby’s lot #28

Top lot of the Tiffany Studios section of the sale went to #28, a fine 20″ diameter Dragonfly table lamp, with red jeweled eyes and beautiful wings, in excellent condition. Estimated to sell for $50,000 – $70,000, it realized $98,500, including buyer’s premium. I had a lovely spot in my home for the lamp, but it wasn’t meant to be.

It’s not every day one gets to bid on a rare and unusual item, like a set of four original Tiffany Studios door knobs. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve ever seen them for sale. The bidders agreed, sending the final price to $8,125, against a pre-sale estimate of $1,000 – $1,500. That’s over $2,000 per knob. Not bad.

Daum Nancy Dragon vase, Sotheby’s lot #101

There were very few French cameo glass lots in the sale, and they all did very well. Lot #101 was a rare, large (12″) vase with a stylized dragon, in the German manner. Crossing the block with an estimate of $6,000 – $8,000, it soared to $28,125. It wasn’t for me, as it appeared that the dragon had been repainted at a later date.

The Palm Springs Modernism Show opens to the public this Saturday, February 16, 2013

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday. This Monday’s blog will be postponed until Tuesday, as the Palm Beach Modernism show ends on Monday.

The Palm Springs Modernism Show will run from February 16-18, 2013

The Palm Springs Modernism Show opens to the public this Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 10 AM and continues until Monday at 4 PM. Don’t understand why the show ends on a Monday, but it is what it is. I prefer a show to end on a Sunday, but I don’t have much say in the matter.

We decided to exhibit in Palm Springs, CA, this year. We had a choice of three shows that run the same week — one in Palm Beach, FL, one in Asheville, NC, and the one we chose, in Palm Springs, CA. We exhibited previously in Palm Beach and Asheville, both with mixed results. So we gambled that a show in Palm Springs might be the right choice. Don’t have a clue if it will go well or not, so tune in on Tuesday for the results. If the results are fair to moderate, we won’t be back, as the expenses to cross the country are considerable. If the show goes really well, we’ll be back. If you’re from Southern California, you can directly affect our decision. Please visit the show and consider a purchase. I’d much prefer to write a glowing review, than not.

I’m bringing a fantastic selection of Tiffany lamps and glass, French cameo glass by Gallé and Daum, and a great selection of original Louis Icart etchings. My large selection of original Tiffany Studios lamps includes three Dragonfly lamps.

I will be posting videos on YouTube of my lecture on French Cameo Glass to the Metropolitan Glass Club. I need some time to edit the videos. When they’re ready, I’ll put the link on my website and here in my blog.

The Original Miami Beach Antique Show opens today, Thursday, January 31, 2013

The Original Miami Beach Antique Show opens to the public today, Thursday, January 31, 2013, at noon, and continues until Monday, February 4, 2013, at 6 PM. Not sure why the show ends on a Monday, but it’s not my decision. Makes more sense to begin on a Wednesday and end on a Sunday.

The show is looking great, with amazing quantity and quality. Many dealers exhibit at this show who rarely exhibit at other shows. I can’t think of another show that attracts dealers and collectors from so many countries. I’ve seen dealers from England, France, Argentina, Italy, Germany and of course, all over the US. Dealers and collectors fly in from all over the entire globe to shop this show. It’s a real happening.

My booth is bursting with not only the most I’ve ever brought, but the best quality I’ve ever brought. For instance, take a look at the big, fabulous Gallé Lake Como vase that I bought yesterday. It’s truly spectacular. The two 14″ Tiffany Studios Dragonfly lamps look great next to the new Handels, Pairpoints and other Tiffany lamps. I’ve got way more than I can describe in this blog. It’s not too late to make plans to come to the show. Come on down, enjoy the weather, eat in the great restaurants and shop the best antique show of the entire year!

The Miami National Antiques Show begins this Friday, January 25, 2013

December is always a slow month. Some people are looking for a $1,000+ antique for a Christmas gift, but most people are looking for a sweater or an iPad. January and February in Miami is another story. Instead of slow, there’s the opposite — action. The world’s most interested buyers fly down for a week or two to enjoy the sun, the beach, the restaurants, and most of all, the concentration of great antiques. There’s no place else where so many important dealers congregate with their best offerings. It’s brilliant. Give everyone a warm, fun city to go to, in the middle of winter, and assemble the best dealers with the finest antiques — and you have the formula for success. That’s why we’re smiling before we head down to Miami.

The Miami National Antiques Show is first, starting this Friday, January 25, 2013, at noon. It will have some of the best dealers with great offerings, but your help is needed. Please attend the show and consider making a purchase. It will insure the show continues. It’s the same problem for most antique shows — they’ve all gotten smaller over the years and need more buyers.

If you come to Miami a few days early, you can accomplish a lot. First you’ll be in Miami, in the middle of winter. That should be enough of a motivation. Second, you can shop the Miami National Antiques Show and see the same antiques that will be on display the following week at the big, important, Original Miami Beach Antiques Show. Of course, there will more dealers and merchandise on display at the second show, but you can get first crack at a decent percentage of it.

I’ve been very busy since the November antique shows, adding to my already large inventory of fantastic French cameo glass and Tiffany glass and lamps. I guarantee you’ll like what you see. My 2012 year in review

2012 was an exceptionally good year. Period. End of blog. OK, OK, just kidding, about the end of the blog, not the year.

Incredible, sold, Gallé seagull vase — one of the best I’ve ever owned

French glass was especially strong, with excellent sales for better examples of Gallé, Daum and pâte-de-verre. Collecting interest was primarily American, but with good international participation.

The Tiffany glass and lamp market was also in top form. Sales were excellent both privately and at auction, with more than a few record prices.

In some areas that had been weak, interest (and sales) strengthened. Specifically, I’m referring to Le Verre Francais and Schneider glass, Pairpoint puffy lamps and Handel reverse-painted lamps. Better examples showed life, with good sales privately and at auction. Pairpoint puffy sales were especially good at various shows around the country.

Here’s hoping that 2013 will continue the strong trend. This weekend we will be exhibiting at our first show of 2013, at the Birchwood Manor, in Whippany, NJ, Saturday and Sunday, January 5-6. We will be bringing all of our new and exciting purchases. We’ll have them all on display. Then on to the all-important Miami shows at the end of the month. If you can’t see us in New Jersey, don’t miss us in Miami.

Some good results at Skinner’s 20th Century Design auction, December 15, 2012

First things first. Happy New Year! May the coming year be a good one, with the new Congress having more sense than the last one. (What are the odds?)

Skinner Boston was the last of the auction houses to hold a December 20th Century sale. Its 20th Century Design auction was held on December 15, 2012, with a few good results. The sale wasn’t terribly exciting, with only a few lots that could be called interesting or selling for $10,000 or more.

Tiffany Studios 17-inch diameter Poppy table lamp, Skinner lot #143

The top lot of the sale was a Tiffany Studios 17″ diameter Poppy table lamp, with decent color, but not in A-1 condition. Estimated fairly at $30,000 – $40,000, it realized $51,000, including buyer’s premium.

Two nice Tiffany Favrile floriform vases easily exceeded their estimates of $800 – $1,200 each, with one selling for $7,200 and the other for $9,000, including buyer’s premiums.

Alphonse Mucha Les Saisons screen, Skinner lot #110

The second highest price paid went to a Les Saisons (The Seasons) screen decorated by the celebrated Austrian Art Nouveau artist, Alphonse Mucha. It went on the auction block with an estimate of $20,000 – $25,000. The final price of $39,000 handily exceeded the high estimate.
