Unfortunately I missed Doyle Auction’s Doyle + Design sale, November 21, 2017

We’re back from vacation, so I’ll begin posting new blogs twice weekly, starting Monday, Christmas Day. It will be a good one on an important and unexpected merger in the auction business. You won’t want to miss it.

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. Now that the weather is colder, I have gone back to publishing twice weekly, as often as possible.

November 21, 2017 was a busy day for auctions, with four auction houses holding simultaneous sales, including Leslie Hindman, Bonham’s LA, Heritage and Doyle New York. I had catalogs from all of them, but I was (and still am) so busy I didn’t realize it until the sales were over. I did manage to buy some nice items at two of the sales, but I should have paid more attention to the sale at Doyle’s. It was a disaster for them, but a gold mine for buyers.

Daum Nancy floral vase, Doyle lot #169

Lot 168 was a beautiful 11″ Daum Nancy vase, estimated to sell for $2,000 – $4,000 — a fair, but low estimate. The vase actually sold for $1,250, including buyer’s premium. It’s a vase that I could have easily sold in the $6,000 – $8,000 price range. Ouch! That hurts.

Handel floor lamp with Tiffany 10″ Favrile shade, Doyle lot #174

Lot #174 was more of a dealer lot. By that I mean it was a marriage of a 10″ Tiffany Favrile shade and a Handel base that a lamp dealer could make into two proper lamps. Namely you would need a suitable Tiffany Studios base for the shade and a 10″ Handel or Steuben shade for the base. It sold for the low estimate of $3,000 ($3,750 including buyer’s premium). It wasn’t the greatest of lamps, but it was well worth the money, especially to a dealer.

One more example was lot # 170, a beautiful French hand-carved and marquetry game table. It sold for only $1,875, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-auction estimate of $3,000 – $5,000.

No more shows until February 2, 2018, when we’ll exhibit at the Miami Airport show. That gives us time to beat the bushes to find new treasures and take some time to smell the figurative roses. November is usually a good month for business. Then business dies in December because most people are looking for less expensive Christmas gifts than we offer. Occasionally we make a Christmas sale, but that’s the exception, not the rule. Cold weather and the New Year bring a new wave of enthusiasm.

Doyle New York held its Doyle at Home sale yesterday, March 8, 2017. Included in the sale was a small selection of mostly mediocre French, Austrian and American art glass and lamps. Doyle used to include this type of merchandise in its 2-3 times yearly Belle Epoque sales, but all of the auction houses have moved to Design sales instead.

Loetz Phänomen vase, Doyle lot #229

Lot #229 was a standout Loetz 7¾” Phänomen vase with drip decoration, on a salmon-colored ground. Estimated to sell for $800 – $1,200, it realized $5,312, including buyer’s premium.

Gallé Crystallerie vase, Doyle lot #226

Lot #226 was a nice 19th century example of Gallé Crystallerie production, which was usually clear glass with enameling. This smallish 5½” example also had applied cabochon flower centers, improving its beauty and sophistication. It sold above its high estimate of $1,500, realizing $2,125, including buyer’s premium.

The Tiffany Studios offerings were mostly low quality, reflected in their middling results. Lot #526, a Tiffany 3-light lily piano lamp, did OK, considering that one of the three shades was badly damaged and held together with tape. It sold for $4,375, against a pre-sale estimate of $1,500 – $2,500.

Next week we’ll be exhibiting at the Charleston Antique Show in Charleston, SC, March 17-19, 2017. I have no idea what to expect since I’ve never exhibited there, but I figure it’s worth a shot. I have low expectations and am hoping for a nice surprise.

Doyle New York sold some interesting Tiffany Studios objects at its 20th Century Art and Design sale, November 9, 2016

Doyle New York held its 20th Century Art and Design sale yesterday, November 9, 2016. Their sales used to be called Belle Epoque, but the times they are a changing. Most auction houses have switched to newer titles that include the word Design. Included in the sale were several interesting lots by Tiffany Studios.

The top lot of the Tiffany Studios section of the sale was #227, a very rare gilded bronze and mosaic inkstand and letter opener. The design was not Tiffany Studios, but rather Marshall Fields. That made sense because the original owner of the set was Potter Palmer II, the son of Potter Palmer, the Chicago business magnate and business partner of Marshall Field. It certainly was a unique special order item. I wanted to buy it, but it zoomed past my top bid, selling for $34,375, including buyer’s premium — an impressive multiple of the pre-sale estimate of $6,000 – $8,000.

A fine Tiffany Studios pottery vase with bird nest decoration, lot #224, sold for $7,500, including buyer’s premium, well above its pre-sale estimate of $2,500 – $3,500. This was another lot I tried to buy, but couldn’t justify paying the price, which was good for a collector, but not a dealer.

No more shows in 2016. Our next show will probably be the NYC Big Flea, the weekend of January 21, at the Lexington Avenue Armory. If not, we’ll be in Miami for the Miami Antiques + Art + Design Show, February 3 – 5, 2017. This is the airport show, which will be new and improved, with many additional exhibitors. It’s all happening because the Miami Beach Antiques Show will not be at the beach, instead moving to a new location in southwest Miami. It will all make for an interesting winter season.

Some nice Tiffany Studios objects sold at Doyle New York’s Belle Epoque sale, June 8, 2016

Doyle New York held its Belle Epoque sale on June 8, 2016, with total sales of $970,913, of which 80% sold by lot and 95% sold by value. Most of the Tiffany Studios objects came from the collection of Julien Cuny, a decorator at Tiffany Studios beginning at age 12 in 1903.

The top lot of the sale was #478, a Tiffany Studios 18″ diameter Peony shade only. It was in excellent, but filthy condition, with an improvised cap. Eventually this shade will be cleaned and reunited with a proper Tiffany Studios base, returning it to the beautiful table lamp it once was. It sold in the middle of its pre-sale estimate of $25,000 – $35,000, realizing $37,500, including buyer’s premium.

A beautiful and rare Tiffany Favrile Agate vase sold above its high estimate of $15,000, realizing $23,750, including buyer’s premium.

An authentic pair of Tiffany Studios windows from the First Presbyterian Church of Hoboken, NJ, failed to garner any interest whatsoever and, of course, did not sell. This was even with a relatively low estimate of $20,000 – $30,000 for the pair. The present owner had paid $101,575 for them at a Christie’s auction in 2004. It wasn’t much of a surprise that they didn’t sell, as they were quite boring. What was more amazing was that the buyer paid $101,575 for them in the first place. There also had to be an underbidder on that day in 2004, proving they both had more cents than sense. (One of my favorite lines.)

French glass sells well at Doyle New York’s Belle Epoque sale, February 18, 2015

Doyle New York held its Belle Epoque sale on February 18, 2015. Included in the sale were two interesting collections of French glass — Schneider glass from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and Gallé glass from the estate of Erica Lemle Amsterdam. Both groups of glass sold well.

Top lot of the museum’s Schneider glass collection was #302, an important applied floral vase. Estimated very conservatively at $1,000 – $1,500, it soared to $5,938, including buyer’s premium.

An early Gallé Crystallerie decanter depicting a Renaissance Queen was the best performing lot of the Erica Lemle Amsterdam estate collection. It realized $12,500, five times its pre-sale high estimate of $2,500.

Doyle New York held its Belle Epoque sale on September 23, 2014. Included in the sale were several Tiffany Studios lamps, which performed well as a group.

Top lot of the sale was a Tiffany Studios 20″ diameter Dragonfly table lamp, deaccessioned by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. With impeccable provenance, and a beautiful shade, the lamp did not disappoint. Selling as lot #533, it realized $87,500 (including buyer’s premium), against a pre-sale estimate of $50,000-$70,000.

While the result for lot #533 could have easily been predicted, the result for lot #525 was completely unexpected. It was a small Tiffany Studios table lamp with a rare Fern base and a 10″ diameter Pine Needle shade, totally damaged. It was expected to sell in the $1,200-$1,800 range, but sold for $31,250 — about 14 times the high estimate. So what was the deal? I spoke to the successful bidder, a collector/dealer, who answered, “When was the last time you saw this base for sale?” It was very rare and he was determined to buy it, no matter what. I imagine he’ll replace the shade with a top-notch Favrile glass shade.

Doyle New York held its Belle Epoque 19th & 20th Century Decorative Arts sale on June 4, 2014 with unremarkable results.  Every auction house is dependent on what it gets offered to sell.  This time around, Doyle was unable to obtain any exceptional merchandise, which showed in the results.

Only one item exceeded $15,000 — lot #85, a polychromed and gilded wood sculpture entitled The Temptress of the King, which sold for $21,250, against a pre-sale estimate of $3,000 – $5,000. Personally I wouldn’t have bought it for any price, but luckily for the consignor, my opinion does not count.

Only a handful of items exceeded $10,000, with many selling for under $2,000.  I was able to scoop up one of the bargains of the sale, a gorgeous Handel reverse-painted Bird lamp on a black background.  It sold for $8,125, against a pre-sale estimate of $5,000 – $7,000.

The inside cover lot, #430, was a beautiful 14½” Amphora portrait vase, decorated by Reissner, Stellmacher & Kessel.  It sold for the low estimate of $6,000 ($7,500 with buyer’s premium).  I suspect the big chip on the foot rim was responsible for the relatively low price. Doyle New York held its Belle Epoque auction yesterday, June 5, 2013. There weren’t many exciting lots, so the results were unremarkable.

Top lot in the art glass and lamps section of the sale went to #512, a Tiffany Studios 12-light lily lamp, which sold for $25,000, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-sale estimate of $12,000-18,000. The price was strong, considering that four of the shades were reproduction and one of the shades was broken and glued. In addition, the switch was replaced, several of the sockets were replaced, several arms were loose and the lamp needed rewiring. It was not in “ready for primetime” shape. My guess is it sold to a dealer who has the wherewithal to put it back into tiptop shape. The patina was excellent, so it will be a primo lamp when it’s ready.

Top lot of the French cameo glass section of the sale went to #539, a huge, 23¼”, Galle dragonfly vase. It sold within the estimate to reach $10,000, including buyer’s premium. Personally I didn’t bid aggressively because the size was too large for me, even though the subject matter was very good. I find it difficult to sell very large vases, as there are fewer collectors who have the room to display them.

Lot #544 was interesting. It was a very desirable Daum Nancy winter scenic table lamp. Ordinarily I would have been all over it, but there was significant damage to the lower rim of the shade (which you can see in the photo, on the right). I didn’t bid at all because of the problems. That didn’t stop other buyers who bid the lamp to $8,125, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-sale estimate of $5,000 – $7,000.

No shows until late July, when we will be in Denver. A fellow dealer convinced me to try the show again. She said the new promoters are good and filled the hall with buyers the last time, so we’ll give it one more shot. Loetz sells well at Doyle New York’s Belle Epoque sale, June 6, 2012

Doyle New York held its Belle Epoque sale on June 6, 2012, with Loetz glass leading the way. The art glass section of the auction was fairly weak, except for Loetz, which was well represented with a great collection that appeared to be from a single owner. The Loetz was estimated very conservatively, so the results easily surpassed their estimates for many lots. I tried to get a statement from the head of the department at Doyle, but unfortunately received no answer.

Top results for the Loetz were shared by two lots, #s 581 and 583. Lot 581 was a rare black bottom vase that could have been estimated much higher than $1,000-1,500. It soared past its estimate to sell for $17,500 (including buyer’s premium).

Two lots later, a gorgeous Loetz vase with very busy decoration of drips and zippers shared the spotlight with #581. It sold for the identical price of $17,500, against the same pre-sale estimate of $1,000 – $1,500.

Setup for the important Palm Beach Jewelry, Art and Antique Show starts on Thursday, February 16th, so I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to post this Thursday, but I’ll try.

Doyle New York held their Belle Epoque sale on Wednesday, February 8th, 2012. There were some fine items in the sale, including Daum vases, a Gallé lamp, Tiffany vases and a rare Tiffany Studios settee. They all did well, but the settee was on fire (well, not literally). The sale totaled $1,775,439, against a pre-sale estimate of $964,100 – $1,456,900, with 86% sold by lot and 95% sold by value.

Top lot of the sale was #439, a Tiffany Studios settee, circa 1890-91, from the music room of the Louisine and Henry Osborne Havemeyer mansion in New York. Estimated to sell for $125,000 – $175,000, it soared to $422,500, including buyer’s premium. All you need to get similar results is to consign your rare Tiffany Studios objects that descended in your family from the 19th century. (Good luck with that!)

The most important Tiffany Favrile vase in the auction, lot #437, was a calla lily paperweight vase, 16½” tall, that sold for $40,625, four times its $10,000-15,000 low estimate.

A fine Daum vase, lot #391, also had a great day. The vase was decorated with vivid blue cornflowers, wheel-carved and with an elaborate silver floral foot (probably original). Against a conservative estimate of $3,500 – $4,500, it shot to $22,500, including buyer’s premium.

Gallé was well represented with a gorgeous purple and yellow clematis lamp, lot #413. It more than doubled its pre-sale estimate of $12,000 – $18,000, to sell for $37,500.

There’s only one more show for us in Florida and that’s the important Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show this coming weekend. It opens to the public this Saturday, February 18th, at 11 AM and continues until Tuesday, February 21st at 6 PM. It has some of the best dealers in the world exhibiting.
