When I have the time to write a contemporaneous account of a show, I do. Unfortunately this is one of those shows. I’ve got plenty of time to write.

Thursday 8:45 PM If you read my blog regularly, you know that I’m going to complain about the preview party. They’re always awful, but sometimes better if the food and drink are good. So this one had good food and drink, so it wasn’t as bad as some others. And I think I made a sale. A lady said she’s buying a Tiffany clock for her husband’s birthday tomorrow and she’ll be back at noon. But I don’t know her and nothing is sold until it’s paid for. We’ll see. Attendance has been lighter than usual. The party is usually packed, but at 8:45 PM our ballroom is empty. Most of the attendees are young women who are here to socialize and have no interest in making any purchases.

Friday 3:30 PM There was quite a bit of interest earlier in the day when some of my clients showed up. I made a couple of very good sales, so the show is off to a good start. I’ve got my fingers crossed that it will also end well, but it’s impossible to predict. My best clients emailed me that they’re unable to attend.

Oh and that lady who said she’s buying a Tiffany clock for her husband showed up and decided not to buy the clock. That’s beyond rude, after she told me it was sold.

Saturday 12:00 PM The show was dead from midday yesterday until now. There’s no reason the show should have opened at 10 AM. 11 AM would have been kind to all concerned. Still haven’t had any serious inquiries, but attendance is picking up and we’re expecting some of our clients later in the day. Hopefully it will be a good day.

Saturday 5:00 PM After a slow start, we made a small sale in the morning and then nothing till later in the afternoon when we made a nice sale. That was followed by a very good sale to one of our best clients. So the day was a good one. Thank you. You know who you are.

Sunday 4:00 PM Sundays are frequently duds, but not this one. New clients came to show today and purchased two Gallé vases, including an important blownout Apple vase. Then we made another couple of sales, including a Tiffany counterbalance desk lamp. That makes three lamps sold at the show, which is a great result. We’re extremely pleased and look forward to both our next show (in Miami) and our next show in Chicago.

No shows until January 18, 2019, when we’ll exhibit at the Miami Antiques + Art + Design Show at the Miami Airport Convention Center (MACC). It precedes the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show which is finally moving back into the newly renovated Miami Beach Convention Center.

I’ll be listing new items soon, especially Tiffany desk set items, which make great Christmas gifts. Look for them soon.

Sat: 10 AM – 5 PM
Sun: 11 AM – 5 PM

We’ll be traveling to Chicago this week to exhibit at the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show at the Winnetka Community Center. It’s one of two shows we have left in the greater Chicago area. The only other one is the Chicago Antiques, Art & Design Show at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago in May.

It’s an interesting show with high quality, diverse exhibitors from around the US, selling everything from paintings to furniture to art to jewelry to glass and lamps (me). We’re coming loaded for bear with a fantastic collection of French and American glass and lamps. You will not be disappointed with the show. Banksy painting self-destructs after selling for $1.4 Million at Sotheby’s London

This past weekend, in a delicious bit of black humor, a painting by the renowned street artist, Banksy, self-destructed immediately after selling at a Sotheby’s London auction for £1,000,000 (approximately $1,400,000). My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. The weather is getting colder and my show schedule is picking up, so I have gone back to publishing twice weekly.

After two disappointing shows in a row, we finished our show circuit with a big success in Winnetka, IL. We didn’t make many sales, but they were all good, including three Tiffany lamps.

The show started off on Thursday evening with the usual excruciating preview party, with no sales, of course. Attendance was light throughout most of the show, but that wasn’t important to us, as the right people showed up. All of our sales were to existing clients, to whom we are eternally grateful. Not one single sale to a new client, which is unfortunate.

No more shows until February 2, 2018, when we’ll exhibit at the Miami Airport show. That gives us time to beat the bushes to find new treasures and take some time to smell the figurative roses. November is usually a good month for business. Then business dies in December because most people are looking for less expensive Christmas gifts than we offer. Occasionally we make a Christmas sale, but that’s the exception, not the rule. Cold weather and the New Year bring a new wave of enthusiasm.

Thursday, 6:30 PM. The preview party has started and as many of you know, I’m not a fan. I suffer through, although good food and drink make them more palatable. The food and drink at this preview party are good, so I’m suffering slightly less, but suffering nonetheless.

The setup went reasonably well, except we were constantly stepping over one another in our small booth. Additionally we had to wait several hours to get electricity. Annoying, but it didn’t prevent us from finishing with plenty of time left over. If I say so myself, the final product is a beautiful booth.

Thursday, 9:30 PM. The party is over and I can’t wait to get to the room and watch Thursday night football. I’m rooting for the Jets.

Attendance was fairly good and there were a few questions, but of course, no sales. As I sit here, the booth is empty and the hallway is filled with people having a grand old time. I’m sorry, but I’m here to do business, not to entertain the local socialites.

Here’s hoping the show goes better than the preview party.

I’ll try to add a few items to my website this weekend. The busier it is, the less time I’ll have, but I should be able. Check my website to see if I was successful.

Setting up at the Southfield Pavilion Antiques, Art, & Modernism Show, October 26, 2017

We didn’t start setup on the right foot. Our truck broke down en route from Denver to Southfield. $1,800 later we worked hard and got the show set up in one day. The result is a great booth.

There’s still a half day left today, Friday, to finish setting up, but we’re finished. The show opens to the public at 2 PM today and closes at 5 PM on Sunday. We have our fingers crossed the show will go well, but we have no illusions. Just like Denver, if the show doesn’t go well, we will not return.

The show is small, but the quality of the dealers is very good. If you’re anywhere in the greater Detroit area, I suggest you pay a visit. I think you’ll be very pleased.

Next week we’ll travel to Winnetka, Illinois for the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show. That’s one show we don’t have to worry about. We have great clients in the greater Chicago area, so we really look forward to it.

We are in Winnetka, IL, this week to exhibit at the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show at the Winnetka Community Center. Yesterday was the first day of setup. Today we’ll finish in time for the preview party this evening. I’m not a fan of preview parties (as those who read my blog already know), but at least this one comes with good food and drink. I hope to sell something this evening, but the odds of that are very low. I’ll let you know in Monday’s blog.

The show is high quality and very diverse, so if you like antique shows, you’ll like this one. This is the only show left in the greater Chicago area in the fall. The only other one left will be in May at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago. Please visit the show and show your support. Shows that don’t get support fail, so let’s try and prevent that. We’ll be traveling to Chicago this week to exhibit at the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show at the Winnetka Community Center. It’s one of two shows we have left in the greater Chicago area. The only other one will be the new Chicago Antiques, Art & Design Show at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago. As you may recall in a previous blog post, the spring show at the Chicago Botanic Garden has been canceled and the new show at the Merchandise Mart is being revived, May 18-21, 2017.

Dramatic changes are coming to Chicago antique shows. First came the good news. Rosemary Krieger, president of Dolphin Promotions, revived the antiques show at the Chicago Merchandise Mart, to be held May 18-21, 2017. Since this was my favorite show of the year, I was thrilled.

Then came the bad news out of nowhere. The Chicago Botanic Garden decided to cancel their spring show permanently. The excuse sounded like double-talk. Here it is verbatim.

As you know, the Antiques & Garden Fair was repositioned in 2015 to become the Antiques, Garden & Design Show in the hope of bringing in new audiences. As the Garden has evolved, so too has this event. After careful consideration, we have decided that now is the perfect time to turn our attention to creating new opportunities to grow the Garden, reach new audiences, and surprise and delight our loyal members and visitors.

With that, 2016 marked our last Antiques, Garden & Design Show.

Huh? Truly disappointing. This was a lovely show, with an excellent facility, good attendance and good business. I will miss this show.

It first appeared that we would increase the number of our shows in the greater Chicago area from two to three, when we suddenly got shot down. Now we’re back to two and thankful to Rosemary Krieger for that. She’ll be able to choose from a pool of previous dealers at the Merchandise Mart plus Chicago Botanic Garden dealers, who will now want to exhibit at her show. It will be a strong group by the time she’s finished. Her timing couldn’t have been better or luckier. Rosemary, time to go out and buy a lottery ticket!

We thought we would have a terrible show when we found out our three best clients couldn’t attend. Considering how few people attended the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show, we did reasonably well. It’s never how many people show up, but who. With factors working against us, I would have to call our results a modest success.

As usual the preview party on Thursday night was a bust. The food and drink were good, but I was truly crawling out of my skin. I couldn’t wait to leave. Of course we didn’t make a sale. I’m starting to resent having to attend preview parties. We really didn’t have to be there. If we had left the lights on and closed the booth, the attendees would have been just as happy. They were there to see and be seen and we were there to be the wallpaper.

The show hours are too long with 8-hour days on Friday and Saturday. Saturday was beyond dead for the first few hours, but then picked up a little in the afternoon. We sold items from the showcases, but nothing from the tables or the walls.

We’ll be back next year when hopefully all of our clients will be able to attend. This is our only fall Chicago area show. Our only other Chicago area show is the Garden, Antique & Design Show at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, IL, April 15 – April 17, 2016. We hope to see you there.

I promised to list many new items on my website and have already done that. I will continue to list many new (and great) items that I’ve recently purchased, both on our buying trip and elsewhere. We have a treasure trove of goodies, so please check my site often for updates.
