The Chicago Merchandise Mart International Antiques Show will be open from April 29 – May 2, 2011

The Merchandise Mart International Antiques Show, April 29 - May 2, 2011

The Chicago Merchandise Mart International Antiques Show will open to the public on Friday, April 29 and remain open until Monday, May 2, 2011. If you only attend one antique show a year, this is the one you were waiting for.

The show is everything you would want from an antique show — it’s elegant, it’s moderately large, it has world-class exhibitors. What else? It’s in downtown Chicago, conveniently located a few blocks west of Michigan Ave, right on the river. It’s spring, so the weather will be near perfect, with fabulous floral displays around the city, especially the tulips on Michigan Ave. You can eat at some of the best restaurants in the world and shop in some of the best stores.

A superb Daum winter ewer that I'll be showing for the first time

Convinced yet? Some of the exhibitors exhibit at very few shows, so you’ll have one of the rare chances to see them. For example, M.S. Rau of New Orleans exhibits at this show and usually bring incredible items, including paintings by Norman Rockwell and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Many of the exhibitors are international, from England, France, Italy and Turkey.

Fantastic bronze grouping in the booth of Greenwald Antiques

Greenwald Antiques has one of the most fantastic items I’ve ever seen at a show. It’s an amazing 6 feet long, gilded bronze grouping of horses and a chariot by the French sculptor E. Picault, given as a gift by the citizens of a town to the local sheriff in England in 1880, with the original presentation plaque, marble base and hand-carved furniture base. It’s a show-stopper.

The show begins on Thursday evening with a preview party. I’m not a fan of preview parties, but the last one in LA was good. Maybe one day I’ll change my mind about preview parties. In the meantime, I’ll appreciate the good food and drink.

Another of the fabulous Daum vases from my buying trip

Personally, I’m bringing some of the finest items I’ve ever shown. We will have an incredible 18″ Tiffany Studios Peony table lamp with superb red flowers plus another dozen Tiffany lamps, including four floor lamps. We’re just back from a European buying trip, so we’ll have some great Daum & Gallé glass that will exhibited for the first time.

I’ll post results on Tuesday, because the show ends on Monday.

Check out my new Tiffany, Daum, and Gallé acquisitions. I just listed a couple of important Tiffany vases, straight from a private home. I also listed about ten Daum and Gallé vases plus about 10 Tiffany Pine Needle and Grapevine desk pieces. I’ll be listing even more Pine and Grapevine pieces within the next few days. Results of the Arlington Park Racetrack Antiques Show, April 1-3, 2011

Setup is just beginning on Wednesday, March 30, 2011

The Arlington Park Racetrack Antiques Show ended yesterday, April 3, 2011. Most of the dealers I spoke to were quite pleased with their results. One dealer who sells furniture sold quite a few pieces. Another who sells jewelry and diverse objects told me he sold a bracelet for $100,000. (I can’t verify that information, so my best guess is that he sold an expensive bracelet, but who knows the price.) I didn’t hear a single complaint from any dealer, except one, and it wasn’t really a complaint. He was just disappointed. The problem was that he’s too specialized and very few buyers showed up for his specialty.

A few of the lamps on display in my booth

Personally, the show went well for me, but with few sales. Based on the number of bona fide buyers who showed up, I should have had a really great show. Too many potential buyers were right on the fence and decided not to make a purchase. It could easily have gone the other way and then I would be raving about my great show. Oh well! I really would like to rave about my great show, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Some of the Daum Nancy glass on display in my booth.

Interest and sales was greatest in Tiffany lamps and glass. French glass was quiet at this show, but not otherwise. The French glass market, mainly Gallé and Daum Nancy glass, is quite active. Each show has a personality, depending on who shows up. This time the Tiffany buyers showed up.

It’s sad to see that the show is shrinking. There was the bare minimum number of dealers for a show. Unfortunately, if the show shrinks any more, there won’t be a show. I’m hoping that the dealers who did well will tell their friends to exhibit there the next time and the show will expand. There are so many good buyers in the area, it would be a serious shame if the show were to close. Are you dealers reading this? Call Shawn Hastings and sign up for the next Arlington Park Racetrack Antiques Show in October. (618) 444-2803. Unfortunately I won’t be at Arlington this coming October because it conflicts with the Fall edition of the Merchandise Mart Antiques Show in downtown Chicago. They’re the same weekend. Bummer! I would love to exhibit at one show and then do the other show the following week. I hope that Shawn can change his dates.

Merchandise Mart Antiques Show, April 29 - May 2, 2011

We’ll be back soon in the Chicago area for the Spring edition of the Merchandise Mart Antiques Show. It will start on Friday, April 29, 2011 and end on Monday, May 2, 2011. Before then we’ll be exhibiting at the Los Angeles Antiques Show at the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Air Center, April 14 to April 17. Then we’re going on a buying trip, so we should have some very fine new items for the Merchandise Mart Show, especially French Cameo Glass. Make the time to come and visit the show. It’s one of the best in the entire United States, so it’s worth a trip from anywhere.

Setting up at the Chicago Merchandise Mart Fall Antiques Show, September 29, 2010

My booth at the Chicago Merchandise Mart Fall Antiques Show, September 29, 2010

The first time I was to exhibit at the Chicago Merchandise Mart Antiques Show, I was concerned. I was familiar with Chicago unions so I was ready for the worst. Much to my surprise, the union was not my enemy, but my friend. Whenever I needed to have something done, I didn’t have to look far to find a carpenter, porter, electrician, painter or whomever. Everything that needed to get done, got done. It’s such a pleasant alternative to many other shows where setting up can be much more difficult.

Wellesley House, Ltd. of Lake Forest, IL is exhibiting at the show

The show is almost all set up and it’s beautiful. I’m always surprised by the quality. It looks great and it’s elegant. The quality and diversity of the exhibitors is special. Many shows are struggling to attract both enough exhibitors and high quality exhibitors. This fall, the Mart had extra difficulty because the Avenue Show in NYC changed their date from December to the same week as the Mart. As a result, several of the Mart’s exhibitors opted to exhibit in NY, rather than Chicago. The show is a little smaller than last year, but still the best quality. Attendees will not be disappointed.

Another of the show's exhibitors

Make the time to visit the show and you will be pleased. The show is open Friday, October 1, 11 am–7 pm; Saturday, October 2, 11 am–7 pm; Sunday, October 3, 11 am–6 pm; and Monday, October 4, 11 am–3 pm. I’m looking forward to seeing my old friends and making new ones. The weather in Chicago in early October is great, the city is vibrant, and the restaurants are superb. Introduce yourself to me and let me know what you’d like to buy, sell or trade.

I’ll post results for the show on Tuesday, as the show ends on Monday.

If you like my blog, please let your friends know by sending them a link. Then check out my new Daum, Gallé and R. Lalique acquisitions. I’ve listed them all on my website. Here’s the link chasenantiques.com.

The Chicago Merchandise Mart Fall Antiques Show runs from October 1-4, 2010

The Merchandise Mart in Chicago runs a very successful antiques show in the late April to early May every year. The success of the show led the Mart to create a fall version, which will open with a preview party on Thursday evening, September 30, 2010. This will be the third time the Mart has run the fall show and it’s getting better every year. It doesn’t have some of the international exhibitors who exhibit there in the spring, but nonetheless it’s an A-1 show that deserves a visit, even if you have to travel some distance.

The Merchandise Mart Fall Antiques Show, October 1-4, 2010

I recently returned from a successful buying trip, so I’ll be bringing some very fine items that you haven’t seen before, especially glass by Daum Nancy, Gallé and R. Lalique.

A superb Daum Nancy ewer with poppies and gilding, 9¾ in. tall

The show hours are Friday, October 1, 11 am–7 pm; Saturday, October 2, 11 am–7 pm; Sunday, October 3, 11 am–6 pm; and Monday, October 4, 11 am–3 pm. Not many shows end on a Monday. I can’t say I’m fond of it, but as this promoter insists on it, we’ll be there until Monday, October 4th.

Make your plans to visit the show. The weather in Chicago in early October is great, the city is vibrant and the restaurants are superb. Introduce yourself to me and let me know what you’d like to buy, sell or trade.

Results of the Denver Antiques Show, July 16-18, 2010

My booth at the Denver Antiques Show, 2:20 PM, Sunday afternoon

My booth at the Denver Antiques Show, 2:20 PM, Sunday afternoon

2:20 PM Sunday. Although attendance has been decent throughout the show, sales have been poor (read non-existent) since Friday afternoon. So based on the results to this minute, we will not be returning to exhibit in Denver. Should something dramatic happen in the last few hours of the show, I will be pleased to change my mind. It’s too bad that the locals don’t buy enough to support the show. Denver is a nice city and Colorado is a beautiful state, but business is business.

5:00 PM, Sunday. The show just closed and sales for the day were $30. Two out of the three shows in Denver were not good, so we have decided not to return to Denver.

I spoke to several dealers and each and every one told me the show didn’t go well. That’s how shows fail. A vicious cycle begins when the dealers can’t sell enough to warrant returning. The show gets smaller, the public is disappointed, and round and round it goes until the show fails. Cleveland used to be a wonderful city to exhibit many years ago, especially at the Cleveland Coliseum, halfway between Cleveland and Akron. Now all of the shows there have failed and there is no decent antique show in the area.

Now we’re on to the Redondo Beach Antiques Show, just south of Los Angeles, this coming weekend, July 23-25, 2010. That show has been shrinking every year, but business is usually decent. I’ve met some of my best clients there, so I hope it doesn’t fail. Apparently that isn’t the case for the other dealers, as many have dropped out. The antiques show business has become tough, with only the best shows surviving in major cities like Miami, New York, Chicago and Baltimore.

Tiffany Studios 12-light lily floor lamp

Tiffany Studios 12-light lily floor lamp

I’m bringing some amazing items to the Redondo Beach show, including a Tiffany 12-light lily floor lamp. Tiffany lily lamps are not rare, but lily floor lamps are. It’s only the second one that I’ve had for sale in the last 35 years. I’ve got another six Tiffany floor lamps, as well as a superb collection of table lamps that I’ve recently acquired. In addition, I’m bringing a wonderful selection of Tiffany, Galle and Daum Nancy glass, and American art pottery, including some great examples of Grueby, Newcomb College, Marblehead, and George Ohr.

Please come and visit me at the Redondo Beach Antiques Show and introduce yourself.

I recently added over 10 Galle vases to my website, 7 Tiffany lamps, 1 Grueby vase, 1 Newcomb vase, Daum Nancy glass and a fabulous Burgun & Schverer internally decorated vase. This coming week, I’ll be adding many new items. Please take a look. Click on this link chasenantiques.com.

Results for the Chicago Merchandise Mart Antique Show, April 30-May 3, 2010

My booth at the Merchandise Mart Antiques Show

My booth at the Merchandise Mart Antiques Show

The Chicago Merchandise Mart Antique Show was held this past weekend, April 30-May 3, 2010. Attendance was very good, but appeared to be down a bit from previous years. Dealer results were mixed, after having spoken to more than a few dealers. Many dealers did well, but more than a few had less than favorable results. One dealer was more upset that he had lost two weeks of his time than with his poor sales. Several dealers did not cover their expenses. One major dealer said that he had an important painting in a client’s home on approval. If the client buys the painting, he will turn a profit. Otherwise, he will probably break even.

On a personal note, my show was good, with interest strongest in French glass. I wish to thank all of my clients who buy from me year after year. Without their loyal support, this would have been a rough show, as sales to new clients were few and far between.

No shows until mid-July, when I kick off the summer season in Denver. This will be my third (and hopefully not last) time there, if business is good. I’ve had mixed results there, so we’ll see if the locals come out and support me. Then on to Redondo Beach, CA, Pasadena, CA, Chicago O’Hare and finally Baltimore over the Labor Day weekend. I will still be actively buying and selling during this break, mostly from my website, so email or call and let’s do some business!

I’m taking a lot of time to add new items to my website. In the last few days I’ve added to the Gallé glass and Icart etchings listings. Please take a look, as every day I’m adding more. Click on this link chasenantiques.com.

The Merchandise Mart Antiques Show preview party, April 29, 2010

My booth at the Merchandise Mart Show, April 29, 2010

My booth at the Merchandise Mart Show, April 29, 2010

The Merchandise Mart Antiques Show opened tonight with a preview party. Attendance was good, with well-dressed attendees, many dressed to the nines. As is usual, preview parties are not for business, but rather for socializing. Tonight was no different. The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago was the charity that was the beneficiary of the evening’s giving. There seemed to be little interest in antiques, except from a couple of serious clients, who would have made purchases even if there were no preview party. (A big thank you to them.)

The Merchandise Mart Antiques Show preview party, April 29, 2010

If you read my blog regularly, you know that I’m not a fan of preview parties. But since I have to attend many of them, I know the good ones. So how does the Merchandise Mart preview compare? Very well, thank you. The food was generous and very tasty, the bars well-stocked and unlimited. So, if I must attend a preview party, at least let it be a good one.

I’m optimistic that business will be good at this show. The antiques market is quite solid at the moment, based on business at shows, but more importantly at auctions. The auction business has been really solid for quite a while. The Mart show ends on Monday, so I’ll post results on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

I’ve taken a lot of time to add new items to my website. Please take a look, as every day I’m adding more. Click on this link chasenantiques.com.

Changes at Stella Shows and Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc.

The Modern Show, 7 West 34th St., NYC, October 16-18, 2009

The Modern Show, 7 West 34th St., NYC, October 16-18, 2009

Good changes are happening in the antique show world. Irene Stella’s company, Stella Show Mgmt. Co., has been promoting shows in the greater NY area for quite a few years. They have many successful shows under their belt, including the Pier Show in Piers 92 and 94, on the Hudson River in NYC. (The fall edition will be held November 14-15.) Stella Shows also manages Antiques at the Armory in the 69th Regiment Armory in NYC, the Chicago Botanic Garden Antiques & Garden Fair and the Modern Show, also in NYC.

Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc., (MMPI) of Chicago, manages the huge Merchandise Mart building in Chicago, which hosts the Chicago Merchandise Mart Antique Show twice yearly in the fall and spring. These two shows are the best in Chicago and amongst the best in the entire US.

Both promoters are heavy hitters in the antiques show promotion world, so it’s nice to hear of cooperation between the two. It’s my understanding that there will be major reconstruction of Piers 92 and 94, which will transform the two piers into one huge exhibition facility, and that MMPI is now in charge of Piers 92 & 94, and will be in charge of the combined facility. MMPI also operates a new facility for exhibitions at 7 West 34th St., in NYC, opposite the Empire State Building. Stella Shows will be holding their next Modern Show at this facility, October 16-18.

A collaboration of two top-notch promoters should bring about some nice changes to their shows. I wish them both good luck!

My booth at the Chicago Merchandise Mart Show

My booth at the Chicago Merchandise Mart Show

We last exhibited at the Chicago Merchandise Mart in May. The spring show is considered the better of the two shows because it’s more established and gets better attendance. But for us the results were the reverse. We were disappointed in the spring and thankful for a very fine show this time around.

Tiffany 14 inch diameter Acorn floor lamp with drink tray, ashtray and magazine rack

Tiffany 14 inch diameter Acorn floor lamp with drink tray, ashtray and magazine rack

I asked a handful of dealers about their results and as always, there was a diversity of opinion. One dealer who is not a specialist and sells fine items from many different categories had one of the best shows ever in Chicago. Another dealer specializing in majolica didn’t do well. Two mid-west dealers said their shows were ok, but not better. Then there’s me. I’d like to thank all of my clients who made purchases. My clients are very loyal and as a result, I’m sincerely appreciative.

Tiffany glass and lamps garnered the most interest this time, with Art Nouveau French cameo glass by Gallé and Daum Nancy a close second. This time there was less interest in Art Deco glass by Le Verre Francais, etchings by Louis Icart and pottery by Rookwood.

Now it’s time for a short break and then back to the greater Chicago area for the Arlington Park Racetrack Show, October 16-18, and then on to Denver the following week.

Please send me your suggestions or questions about art glass, lamps, Louis Icart, shows, auctions, etc. If it’s interesting, I’ll answer your question in a future blog entry.

The Chicago Merchandise Mart Preview Party

Preview night at the Chicago Merchandise Mart Show

Preview night at the Chicago Merchandise Mart Show

The preview party is in full swing as I type this post. There are lots and lots of people walking around, probably hundreds. What I don’t understand is why are we here?? I guess it benefits some charity, so the promoters feel it’s a good thing, but from a dealer’s point of view — GET ME OUTTA HERE! Most of the time, the attendees are just here for a good time. It’s a social event. See and be seen. Well, that’s great for everyone who attends, but not for the dealers. Remember, antique shows are a business. The dealers are here to sell. The cost to dealers to exhibit at a show is a few thousand to many thousands of dollars, not even counting the investment in time. If we don’t sell, we go out of business. If the show promoters would pay us just to exhibit and not sell, that would be another story, but unfortunately, that’s not the case.

My spacious booth at the show, #339

My spacious booth at the show, #339

On this particular evening, one of my loyal Chicago clients came to my booth and purchased a couple of fine items, so the evening was not a complete loss, but this client would have bought from us during regular show hours, if there hadn’t been a preview party.

On the positive side, there was complimentary red and white wine and a few hors d’oeuvres, so that’s not bad. The hors d’oeuvres were even tasty.

So if I may sum up my feelings and speak directly to the show promoters. NO PREVIEW PARTIES, PLEASE!
