Setting up at the Denver Antiques Show, July, 2014

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

July 25-27, 2014

Setup at the Denver Antiques Show was a 2-day affair, starting on Wednesday, July 23rd and finishing today, Thursday, July 24th.  It’s gone smoothly, with easy access to the show floor.  This time we have an unusual through-booth that is open on two sides, to two different aisles.  We’ve had to change our setup to accommodate this new space, but it seems to work nicely.

The booth will look great when we're finished setting up

The show opens to the public tomorrow, Friday, July 25th, at 10 AM and runs until Sunday, July 27th, at 5 PM.  Hopefully attendance, interest and sales will be good so we can return.  Tune in on Monday for the results of the show.

We’ve got lots of new items, so our display is substantially different. It includes a great assortment of Tiffany glass and lamps, Tiffany and French cameo glass, and assorted paintings, bronzes, etchings and other treasures.

If you’re anywhere in the greater Denver area, come and visit the show! There are plenty of fine exhibitors with high-quality displays that cover the range from silver, to paintings, to art, to glass and lamps (me!).

Next week we’ll be in Kansas City for the Kansas City Antiques Expo at the KCI Expo Center, which will open to the public on Friday, August 1st. The show will only be two days, so it will close on Saturday, August 2nd at 6 PM and not be open on Sunday — very unusual, so mark it on your calendar. Make sure to come and visit if you’re in the area.

The Denver Antiques Show opens to the public this Friday, July 25th, at 10 AM and runs until Sunday, July 27th, at 5 PM. It will be our third time there and hopefully will be the charm. It it goes poorly, we won’t return to Denver. It’s quite a trip from New York and will only be worthwhile if we can turn a decent profit. If you want the show to continue, please visit and consider making a purchase from anyone. Shows fail if they don’t attract enough dealers and exhibitors. The Chicago Summer Antique Show in Rosemont, IL, just failed and closed.

The results of the Denver World Wide Antique & Vintage Show, July 19-21, 2013

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Saturday afternoon, in front of my booth

Saturday afternoon, in front of my booth

I never meant to ruffle any feathers when I last wrote about the Denver Antiques show in July of 2010, but apparently I did. I got word that several people were angry with me and wanted to know why I was exhibiting again in Denver, when they thought I wrote disparagingly about the show three years ago. First and foremost, I write honestly about shows, whether the news is good or bad. I never intend to harm other dealers or show promoters, but it’s possible the truth may hurt. Sorry, but I won’t do it another way.

Saturday afternoon in my booth

Now for the show at hand. The Denver World Wide Antique & Vintage Show was held this past weekend, July 19-21, 2013. Attendance was light on Friday and Saturday, with a few small sales to the public and a few sales to dealers on the floor. Sales to other dealers exceeded sales to the public, which was a rarity in my booth.

Sunday afternoon in front of my booth

Sunday afternoon in front of my booth

Sunday continued with light attendance and no sales to the public. I did make one sale to another dealer on the floor of the show, making this the first time in 40 years where I sold more to dealers on the floor than the public.

In asking around at the show, I got the following responses from other dealers to the question “How did you do?”. “Killer” was the response from a dealer in jewelry and assorted items; “Great” from a dealer in bronzes, china and assorted; “AOK” from a dealer in art glass; “Terrible” from a dealer in silver and cut glass; “Mediocre” from a dealer in art pottery; “Quite well” from a dealer in bronze, 19th century and assorted; “Horrible” from a dealer in furniture; “OK” from a dealer in art glass and watches; “Pretty good” from a jewelry dealer who’s done the show for years; and finally “Fair” from me.

The jury is still out as to whether we’ll exhibit again in Denver. If we can work it out geographically with another show the week before or after, we might try it again.

We haven’t exhibited in Denver for the last three years, as we didn’t sell enough to justify the expenses of traveling from New York. A fellow dealer, Loretta Gosse, encouraged me to try the show again, as the show was sold to new owners. Most shows improve under new owners, usually with better promotion. Loretta told me the last show, under the new promoters, was excellent, so we decided to exhibit in Denver one more time. Hopefully we’ll do well and return next year. Tune in Monday for the results.

Most dealers seemed quite upbeat. They told me of good results at recent shows, both in Denver, Kansas City and elsewhere. Good advertising and promotion can do the trick of attracting more and better buyers to a show, so everyone benefits. It creates a virtuous circle, where a show gets better each year. The show is already larger than three years ago, and that’s a very good sign.

This will be our first show since the spring, when we exhibited at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. In the meantime, we’ve been traveling and buying everywhere. There are so many new items in our inventory, you’ll have trouble recognizing our booth (not really). If you’re in the area, please try to visit the show. It’s much improved and worth your while.

The summer antique show season is about to begin

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

The summer antiques shows are almost upon us, with Denver first. We gave up on Denver a few years ago, but were convinced to try it again, since the show is under new management. Hopefully it will be better this time around, so we can look forward to returning the following year. The show will be held at the Denver Mart, beginning on Friday, July 19 at 10 AM and ending on Sunday, July 21, at 5 PM. Please visit us in booth 107 and take a look at our spectacular new purchases, accumulated from around the world.

The following week, we will exhibit locally in the New York area, at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany, NJ. It’s a short, weekend show, July 27-28. The quality is very good for a small show. Some years it’s gone very well and others not. We’ll see what’s in store for us this year.

August’s shows have a better track record. First we’ll be in Rosemont, IL, for the Chicago Summer Antiques Show at the Rosemont Convention Center, August 16-18. It’s a small, but good quality show. We always look forward to Chicago, as we have many good friends and clients in the area. We’ll no longer exhibit at Arlington Racetrack, if there is another show there (and that’s in doubt). That increases the importance of our other shows in the greater Chicago area.

The last show of the summer is also the best. The Baltimore Summer Antiques Show has been slowly evolving, first under the stewardship of the former promoter, Frank Farbenbloom, and now under the ownership of the Palm Beach Show Group. Every year, incrementally, the show has gotten better, with higher quality exhibitors, increased attendance, and stronger sales. In my opinion, it’s now one of the two best antiques shows of the year, competing only with the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show in January. Make your travel plans now and join buyers who drive and fly in from all over the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. Then stop by my booth to say hi.

We're starting to set-up at the Redondo Beach Antiques Show, 7/21/10

Apparently I ruffled a few feathers when I posted my last blog entry about the results of the Denver Antiques Show last weekend. I want to make a few things perfectly clear. I did not predict, nor do I desire, the failure of the show. Just the opposite. I wish for the show to get better and succeed. I stated that I personally did not do well and will not return. It is my strong contention that it is important for attendees of a show to buy from their favorite dealers in order for the show to remain viable. I wish the Denver Merchandise people the best of luck for their future success.

At the moment, we’re in Los Angeles, setting up the Redondo Beach Antiques Show. It will be held this coming weekend, Friday-Sunday, July 23-25, 2010. The show is smaller this year, with mostly indoor exhibitors and a few outdoor ones. What is nice is that the show has many good quality dealers. Many of the lesser dealers have dropped out, but the ones that remain are solid. It’s definitely worth a trip to the show from the greater Los Angeles area. You’ll be very pleased with the dealers and the selection of fine items for sale.

The mood here in LA is very good, so I’m cautiously optimistic that the results will be an improvement from the previous week. I’ll be reporting on the results this coming Monday or Tuesday. In the meantime, come visit me at the show to see the great items I’ve brought and take home something you like. You have personal control of the results.

I recently added over 10 Galle vases to my website, 7 Tiffany lamps, 1 Grueby vase, 1 Newcomb vase, Daum Nancy glass and a fabulous Burgun & Schverer internally decorated vase. This coming week, I’ll be adding many new items. Please take a look. Click on this link chasenantiques.com.

Results of the Denver Antiques Show, July 16-18, 2010

My booth at the Denver Antiques Show, 2:20 PM, Sunday afternoon

My booth at the Denver Antiques Show, 2:20 PM, Sunday afternoon

2:20 PM Sunday. Although attendance has been decent throughout the show, sales have been poor (read non-existent) since Friday afternoon. So based on the results to this minute, we will not be returning to exhibit in Denver. Should something dramatic happen in the last few hours of the show, I will be pleased to change my mind. It’s too bad that the locals don’t buy enough to support the show. Denver is a nice city and Colorado is a beautiful state, but business is business.

5:00 PM, Sunday. The show just closed and sales for the day were $30. Two out of the three shows in Denver were not good, so we have decided not to return to Denver.

I spoke to several dealers and each and every one told me the show didn’t go well. That’s how shows fail. A vicious cycle begins when the dealers can’t sell enough to warrant returning. The show gets smaller, the public is disappointed, and round and round it goes until the show fails. Cleveland used to be a wonderful city to exhibit many years ago, especially at the Cleveland Coliseum, halfway between Cleveland and Akron. Now all of the shows there have failed and there is no decent antique show in the area.

Now we’re on to the Redondo Beach Antiques Show, just south of Los Angeles, this coming weekend, July 23-25, 2010. That show has been shrinking every year, but business is usually decent. I’ve met some of my best clients there, so I hope it doesn’t fail. Apparently that isn’t the case for the other dealers, as many have dropped out. The antiques show business has become tough, with only the best shows surviving in major cities like Miami, New York, Chicago and Baltimore.

Tiffany Studios 12-light lily floor lamp

Tiffany Studios 12-light lily floor lamp

I’m bringing some amazing items to the Redondo Beach show, including a Tiffany 12-light lily floor lamp. Tiffany lily lamps are not rare, but lily floor lamps are. It’s only the second one that I’ve had for sale in the last 35 years. I’ve got another six Tiffany floor lamps, as well as a superb collection of table lamps that I’ve recently acquired. In addition, I’m bringing a wonderful selection of Tiffany, Galle and Daum Nancy glass, and American art pottery, including some great examples of Grueby, Newcomb College, Marblehead, and George Ohr.

Please come and visit me at the Redondo Beach Antiques Show and introduce yourself.

A view of some of the lamps in my booth at the Denver Antiques Show

I’m writing from the floor of the antique show in Denver. It’s the third time I’m exhibiting here and this will be the acid test of whether I’ll return to Denver. After the first few hours of the show, the early results are inconclusive.

In the meantime, let me first apologize for not updating my blog recently. Preparing to exhibit at my summer shows has been a time-consuming task and I just didn’t have the time. Now that the shows have started, I’ll try hard to update my blog regularly, twice weekly, usually on Monday and Thursday.

I’ve heard from several people that they’re received pop-up notices from Microsoft that my blog is not safe to view. I’ve had this thoroughly checked by my son (who is an expert on website design and safety), as well as Norton Antivirus. If you suspect that a site is not safe, enter the URL in the search box on the Norton site. Here’s the link. Norton Safeweb. You can check the safety of any website. I’ve entered my own blog URL and received the following notice.

I suggest that you ignore the unsafe notice from Microsoft or add my site address to your list of “trusted sites” and the issue will go away. Please write to me if you’ve experienced any similar problems.

Back to the Denver show. Setup went smoothly, but was a bigger deal than usual because so much of the merchandise was new. I spent a good part of the spring and early summer buying like a madman, so I could display many new and fine items. In that respect, I was highly successful. During setup, I sold a couple of large fantastic bronzes to another dealer. Pre-show sales are always nice and got the show off to a good start.

The show has now been open for a few hours. Attendance was pretty decent for the first few hours, but sales were slow. A great Quezal vase was one of the first items out the door. I’ll keep you posted with the final results on Monday or Tuesday, and a decision as to whether we’ll return to Denver the following July.

The summer antique show season is about to begin in Denver, July 16-18, 2010

Spring is always a slow time for antiques and antique shows. There just aren’t any good shows, so I redirect my attention elsewhere, but not too far astray. Mainly I spend the time trying to acquire wonderful new items for my summer show schedule of five shows — Denver, Redondo Beach, Pasadena, Chicago and finally Baltimore.

I’ve really succeeded this time. I’ve been lucky to find several fine Tiffany Studios floor lamps, including rare examples with unusual bases and fine Linenfold or Favrile glass shades. And how about a superb 18″ Tiffany Studios Belted Dogwood table lamp?

The Denver Antiques Show, July 16-18, 2010

My first show this summer will be in Denver, July 16-18. I hope everyone comes out to support the show. I exhibited there last summer for the first time and had a pretty good show — good enough to return in the fall. Unfortunately that didn’t go well. This third Denver show will be the test — best of three. Two good shows and I’ll be back. Two bad shows and goodbye to Denver. Over the years, I’ve had to eliminate many good cities from my schedule because I couldn’t do enough business to make them worth my while. Gone from my schedule are San Francisco, Indianapolis, Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, New Haven, Hartford, Sarasota, Houston and others. Too bad, because I really like some of those cities, especially San Francisco and Houston.

The week after Denver, we’ll be at the Redondo Beach Antiques Show, just south of LA. One week off and then back to the same general area — Pasadena. A couple of weeks off and then on to Chicago and finally Baltimore over the Labor Day weekend. Try to make the time to come and see us when we get to or near your city. Some of the shows are worth a trip from anywhere. For a complete list of my shows, please click on the following link. Philip Chasen Antiques show schedule.

No thank you, Denver

Sunday at the Denver Antiques Show

Sunday at the Denver Antiques Show

What a difference a city makes. After two very good shows in Chicago, I was cautiously optimistic about my show in Denver. This was my second time in Denver after having exhibited there this past July. That show went well enough for me to want to try Denver a second time. I can now report that Denver is not Chicago. Big surprise. It’s not for lack of attendance. There were quite a few people at the show, but there was a distinct lack of sophistication. Most of the people strolling by had no concept of what they were viewing. With a paucity of educated questions, it was highly unlikely that I could make a sale. Unfortunately that was the case.

Day 1. One small sale. Not only was business poor, but I had to raise my voice to an elderly gentleman who was opening my showcase without permission (he was quite hard of hearing). As many of you know, that is verboten in my booth (and most everybody else’s too). Day 2. One book sold. A rotten day. To make things worse, I was busy all day bidding on the telephone at the Skinner auction of the Richard Wright collection. Prices were on fire in Boston, with little business in Denver. It was an interesting juxtaposition. Day 3. One book sold. A lady asked me the price of a Tiffany Dragonfly lamp “just for fun”. When I told her the price, she started laughing hysterically. Lady, I’m having a tough day. Go away! Later a good client called to tell me she wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t attend the show, nor could she make up her mind yet about a prospective purchase. Some days it doesn’t pay to get out of bed.

I was thinking of exhibiting in Denver again in March, 2010, but that won’t be the case. I will give the city another shot in July, 2010, on the way out west to my shows in Redondo Beach and Pasadena. My plan will be to exhibit there every July if the next one works for me. If not, goodbye Denver. It’s a nice show, so I hope it works out.

Please send me your suggestions or questions about art glass, lamps, Louis Icart, shows, auctions, etc. If it’s interesting, I’ll answer your question in a future blog entry.
