The results of the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show, November 4-6, 2016

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Thursday, 8:40 PM. The preview party is almost over and I can’t wait to leave. There has been almost no interest in anything in our booth, except for one half-serious question. As usual, the food and drink has been excellent, but that’s about it. Of course there were no sales, not even close. Attendance was noticeably lighter than previous years, mostly with young women in their 30s. I’m guessing the men were at parties celebrating the Cub’s World Series victory. How about dem Cubs? Here’s hoping the weekend has nothing to do with the preview party.

Friday, 1:45 PM. Attendance has been light thus far. Two of our good clients came, but unfortunately didn’t purchase anything.

Friday, 5:30 PM. Attendance has been fairly dreadful all day. One of my best clients arrived late in the day and bought a very beautiful Gallé Fuchsia blownout vase.

Saturday, 11:30 AM. Attendance was very light during the first hour, but it’s picking up nicely. There is no reason the show should open at 10 AM. 11 AM – 5 PM is six hours of selling time and is more than sufficient for everyone to see everything and for the dealers to do business. Two of my good clients were in my booth and will hopefully be back later to make purchases.

Saturday, 4:30 PM. Everything improved on Saturday afternoon — attendance, interest and sales. One of our best clients came in late in the day and is considering purchasing several items. We’ll know tomorrow.

Sunday, 4:00 PM. The show is essentially over, even though it ends technically in an hour. Nobody is walking around.

We had a wonderful show, selling bronzes, French glass and American glass. Yesterday’s clients came back today and bought several important items. The only downside was almost every sale was to an existing client. Thank you, we love you, but we also need new blood.

I’ve been negligent in listing new items, but that’s already changed. I listed half a dozen new items this past weekend and I’ll be listing more this week. Please check my site as often as you can.

No more shows in 2016. Our next show will probably be the NYC Big Flea, the weekend of January 21, at the Lexington Avenue Armory. If not, we’ll be in Miami for the Miami Antiques + Art + Design Show, February 3 – 5, 2017. This is the airport show, which will be new and improved, with many additional exhibitors. It’s all happening because the Miami Beach Antiques Show will not be at the beach, instead moving to a new location in southwest Miami. It will all make for an interesting winter season.

We’re still very much in business between shows, so please don’t hesitate to email or call. I always strive to offer the finest objects for sale on my website and at every show. There are many items for sale, sold items with prices and free lessons about glass and lamps. And remember to keep reading my blog.

Setting up at the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show, November 1, 2016

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Our booth is about half done

Our booth is about half done

We are in Winnetka, IL, this week to exhibit at the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show at the Winnetka Community Center. Yesterday was the first day of setup. Today we’ll finish in time for the preview party this evening. I’m not a fan of preview parties (as those who read my blog already know), but at least this one comes with good food and drink. I hope to sell something this evening, but the odds of that are very low. I’ll let you know in Monday’s blog.

The show is high quality and very diverse, so if you like antique shows, you’ll like this one. This is the only show left in the greater Chicago area in the fall. The only other one left will be in May at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago. Please visit the show and show your support. Shows that don’t get support fail, so let’s try and prevent that. Please visit my booth, C20, and say hello.

The Antiques + Modernism Winnetka Show opens this Friday, November 4, 2016

The Winnetka Community House

The Winnetka Community House

We’ll be traveling to Chicago this week to exhibit at the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show at the Winnetka Community Center. It’s one of two shows we have left in the greater Chicago area. The only other one will be the new Chicago Antiques, Art & Design Show at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago. As you may recall in a previous blog post, the spring show at the Chicago Botanic Garden has been canceled and the new show at the Merchandise Mart is being revived, May 18-21, 2017.

We'll have this wonderful 19" Daum Parrot Tulip vase at the show

We’ll have this wonderful 19″ Daum Parrot Tulip vase at the show

It’s an interesting show with high quality, diverse exhibitors from around the US, selling everything from paintings to furniture to art to jewelry to glass and lamps (me). We’re coming loaded for bear with a fantastic collection of French and American glass and lamps. You will not be disappointed with the show. It’s worth a trip from anywhere in the greater Chicago area. If you like antique shows, this is the only game in town until the spring. Please visit my booth, C20, and say hello.

Northeast Auctions, Portsmouth, NH, sold a beautiful Burgun & Schverer French cameo glass bottle at auction, October 25, 2016

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Burgun & Schverer (B&S) internally decorated bottle, Northeast lot #200

Northeast Auctions, Portsmouth, NH, held an auction, October 17-18, 2016. Included in the sale was a beautiful Burgun & Schverer French cameo glass bottle with silver mounts and internally decorated bleeding hearts decoration, lot #200. It sold for $4,320, including buyer’s premium, against a pre-sale estimate of $1,500 – $2,500. I was the underbidder. I would have bid higher, but the bottle had some minor condition problems, including a chip to the inner rim of the bottle and a chip to the stopper.

Following is a link to a prior blog post on B&S glass, so you can appreciate its importance and desirability. Click here.

winnetka-2016Our next show in Winnetka, Illinois, is next week, November 4-6, 2016. This is our only fall show in the greater Chicago area (and probably our last show of the year). We always look forward to exhibiting there, especially to see all our friends and clients. Put it in your calendar. It’s a lovely show!

Horta Auctioneers sold French cameo glass in Brussels, Belgium, October 17-18, 2016

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Horta Auctioneers, Brussels, Belgium, held an important sale, October 17-18, 2016. Included were quite a few lots of French cameo glass, including some very large examples, possibly from the same collection.

Monumental Gallé scenic vase, Horta lot #209

Monumental Gallé scenic vase, Horta lot #209

Top lot of the French cameo glass was #209, a huge 20″ tall scenic vase by Emile Gallé. Besides its enormous size, the decoration was very colorful and highly detailed. It sold below its aggressive pre-auction estimate of €25,000 – €30,000, realizing €24,000 ($26,125), including buyer’s premium. Sounds fair for such a huge vase. The problem for me personally would have been shipping, transporting and displaying such a gigantic vase at a show.

Monumental Daum Columbine vase, Horta lot #139

Monumental Daum Columbine vase, Horta lot #139

Lot #139 was another of the very large vases, this time by Daum, 21″ tall, with columbine decoration. It too sold below its estimate of €4,500 – €6,000, realizing €5,040 ($5,486), including buyer’s premium. (Remember the estimate does not include the buyer’s premium.) Personally I don’t have much luck selling very tall, narrow vases, so I tend to avoid them.

Monumental Le Verre Francais vase, Horta lot #145

Monumental Le Verre Francais vase, Horta lot #145

Le Verre Francais made some very large vases, but 27½” is ridiculously large. The decoration on this example was nothing special, but the vase still sold within its pre-auction estimate of €4,500 – €6,000, realizing €6,000 ($6,531), including buyer’s premium.

New Orleans Auction sold French cameo glass at its October 15-16, 2016 sale

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

New Orleans Auction Galleries held an almost 1000-lot sale, October 15-16, 2016. Included in the sale were quite a few lots of French cameo glass, mostly low quality. I was interested in two of the lots, but unfortunately I missed the sale.

Gallé scenic vase, New Orleans lot #149

Gallé scenic vase, New Orleans lot #149

Lot #149 was a large, 14″, Gallé scenic vase with very good color and a rare shape. It was estimated to sell for $1,500 – $2,500 and realized $3,500, including buyer’s premium. That was a fair price, so I probably would have been the buyer.

Argy-Rousseau? moth paperweight, New Orleans lot #928

Argy-Rousseau? moth paperweight, New Orleans lot #928

Lot #928 was possibly an Argy-Rousseau pâte-de-verre moth paperweight. It sold for very little money, $812.50, including buyer’s premium. The problem with this lot is that it may or may not have been authentic, as this particular paperweight has been reproduced. From the photo it was very difficult to ascertain its authenticity. My guess was 60/40 that it was a reproduction. In person I would have had no problem. So if I had bought it and determined it to be fake, returning it would have been a hassle. In retrospect, it was probably a good thing I didn’t buy it.

French cameo glass shapes matter

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Most of the time a French cameo glass vase is more valuable when the subject matter is more desirable. For instance a Daum rain vase is considerably more valuable than a floral vase if the two are the same size and shape. But what if the same subject matter appears on different shapes? It can make a difference, sometimes a big difference.

Both Daum vases have wild orchids and spider web decoration

Both Daum vases have wild orchids and spider web decoration

Let’s take a look at the same subject matter on different shapes. I think it’s obvious that the above left shape is ordinary, while the shape on the right is special and rare. I would estimate the vase on the right would be worth at least triple.

daum-swan-comparisonHow about these two? Any shape with a swan is good, as the decoration is rare and very desirable. But let’s just compare the shapes. The covered egg shape is very rare and beautiful, but not everyone loves it. I would say the egg would be more valuable, depending on the size of each.

Gallé wasn’t as adventurous with shapes as Daum. Most Gallé shapes are fairly ordinary, but some are very pleasant. I personally like the flattened triangle pictured above.

More than a few collectors like Gallé’s banjo shape so much, they have amassed collections with over 75 different examples. The Rio de Janeiro banjo vase is the one of the rarest.

Christie’s South Kensington sold some French cameo glass at their Interiors sale, September 14, 2016

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Christie’s South Kensington held their Interiors sale yesterday, September 14, 2016, with total sales of £764,688 ($1,009,329). Included in the sale were about twenty French cameo vases. I probably would have bought a few of them, but unfortunately I missed the sale.

Daum Nancy Rain scenic vase, Christie's lot #201

Daum Nancy Rain scenic vase, Christie’s lot #201

Lot #201 was a nice Daum Nancy 8½” Rain scenic vase. It exceeded its pre-sale estimate of £3,000 – £5,000, realizing £6,875 ($9,151).

Daum Nancy Thistle vase, Christie's lot #139

Daum Nancy Thistle vase, Christie’s lot #139

The top lot of the Daum Nancy selection of glass was #139, a huge 19¾” vase, with nice coloration and very fine martelé work in the background. I’ve had similar vases in the past, which were superior to this example, in my opinion. I didn’t like the carving on the foot as it looked too haphazard, like the carver was trying to eliminate flaws in the making. It was all original, but not to my taste. Regardless, it exceeded its high estimate of £6,000, realizing £7,500, ($9,982).

Gallé wheel-carved and intercalaire vase, Christie's lot #138

Gallé wheel-carved and intercalaire vase, Christie’s lot #138

Top lot of the Gallé glass was #138, a Hazelnut vase with internal decoration, called intercalaire. Brown is not usually a desirable color, but the high-quality workmanship, including wheel-carving, was attractive to bidders. It sold over its high estimate of £6,000, realizing £8,750 ($11,646). I didn’t like it, so I wasn’t going to bid, no matter what the price.

All dealers walk around the show floor during the two days of setup buying from each other. I was able to purchase several wonderful Daum, Gallé and Argy-Rousseau vases during setup, which I’ll have at the show. Early buying is one of the advantages of being an exhibitor, which sometimes works out very well.

We don’t have a show scheduled for quite some time. We probably won’t exhibit at the NYC Pier Antiques Show, now that it’s become a very expensive version of the old show. The original show folded and was replaced by a show from the Palm Beach Show Group, who were forced to move after being shut out of the NY Armory.

A Daum Nancy vase with applied snails is a modern reproduction

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Which vase is fake?

Which vase is fake?

Authentic Daum vases with applied and wheel-carved snails are rare, highly desirable and valuable. So I was surprised yesterday when I received photos of a “Daum Nancy” vase with applied snails. It was immediately obvious to me that the vase was a reproduction. The fake vase is crude and harsh. Take a look at the photos above, comparing an authentic example and the reproduction example. If you have trouble telling which is which, you should only buy from an expert who unconditionally guarantees authenticity. The example on the right is a modern reproduction.

daum-fake-and-real-snail-vases-2The real snail on the left is delicate and beautifully wheel-carved by hand. The fake snail on the right is crude, with gilded details.

baltimore-8-2016The Baltimore Summer Antiques Show is right around the corner, August 25-28, 2016. It’s the best show of the summer and maybe now the best of the year (with all the changes coming this winter in Miami). People fly in from all over the world to attend, including from as far away as Japan. If you haven’t yet visited, you should. It’s big, with some of the best national and international dealers. You’ll also enjoy Baltimore. Hope to see you there!

In the meantime, we’re very much in business. Call or email me with your wants or items for sale. If you have what I’m looking for, I’m paying the highest prices. My decisions are quick and my payments just as quick. Just snap a photo and email it to me.
