Setting up at the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show, November 1, 2016

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Our booth is about half done

Our booth is about half done

We are in Winnetka, IL, this week to exhibit at the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show at the Winnetka Community Center. Yesterday was the first day of setup. Today we’ll finish in time for the preview party this evening. I’m not a fan of preview parties (as those who read my blog already know), but at least this one comes with good food and drink. I hope to sell something this evening, but the odds of that are very low. I’ll let you know in Monday’s blog.

The show is high quality and very diverse, so if you like antique shows, you’ll like this one. This is the only show left in the greater Chicago area in the fall. The only other one left will be in May at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago. Please visit the show and show your support. Shows that don’t get support fail, so let’s try and prevent that. Please visit my booth, C20, and say hello.

I’ve been negligent in listing new items, but that will soon be coming to an end. I’ve taken photos of many new items and I will start listing them shortly. Please check my site as often as you can.

Click here to check my website for the latest items and to look around. I will update it as often as time permits. We’re still very much in business between shows, so please don’t hesitate to email or call. I always strive to offer the finest objects for sale on my website and at every show. There are many items for sale, sold items with prices and free lessons about glass and lamps. And remember to keep reading my blog.

The Winnetka Community House

The Winnetka Community House

We’ll be traveling to Chicago this week to exhibit at the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show at the Winnetka Community Center. It’s one of two shows we have left in the greater Chicago area. The only other one will be the new Chicago Antiques, Art & Design Show at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago. As you may recall in a previous blog post, the spring show at the Chicago Botanic Garden has been canceled and the new show at the Merchandise Mart is being revived, May 18-21, 2017.

It’s an interesting show with high quality, diverse exhibitors from around the US, selling everything from paintings to furniture to art to jewelry to glass and lamps (me). We’re coming loaded for bear with a fantastic collection of French and American glass and lamps. You will not be disappointed with the show. It’s worth a trip from anywhere in the greater Chicago area. If you like antique shows, this is the only game in town until the spring. Please visit my booth, C20, and say hello.

Dramatic changes coming to Chicago antique shows

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

The Chicago Merchandise Mart

The Chicago Merchandise Mart

Dramatic changes are coming to Chicago antique shows. First came the good news. Rosemary Krieger, president of Dolphin Promotions, revived the antiques show at the Chicago Merchandise Mart, to be held May 18-21, 2017. Since this was my favorite show of the year, I was thrilled.

chicago-merchandise-mart-5-2017

Then came the bad news out of nowhere. The Chicago Botanic Garden decided to cancel their spring show permanently. The excuse sounded like double-talk. Here it is verbatim.

As you know, the Antiques & Garden Fair was repositioned in 2015 to become the Antiques, Garden & Design Show in the hope of bringing in new audiences. As the Garden has evolved, so too has this event. After careful consideration, we have decided that now is the perfect time to turn our attention to creating new opportunities to grow the Garden, reach new audiences, and surprise and delight our loyal members and visitors.

With that, 2016 marked our last Antiques, Garden & Design Show.

Huh? Truly disappointing. This was a lovely show, with an excellent facility, good attendance and good business. I will miss this show.

Our booth last year at the Chicago Botanic Garden

It first appeared that we would increase the number of our shows in the greater Chicago area from two to three, when we suddenly got shot down. Now we’re back to two and thankful to Rosemary Krieger for that. She’ll be able to choose from a pool of previous dealers at the Merchandise Mart plus Chicago Botanic Garden dealers, who will now want to exhibit at her show. It will be a strong group by the time she’s finished. Her timing couldn’t have been better or luckier. Rosemary, time to go out and buy a lottery ticket!

winnetka-2016Our next show will be in Winnetka, Illinois, November 4-6, 2016. This is our only fall show in the greater Chicago area. We always look forward to exhibiting there, especially to see all our friends and clients. Put it in your calendar. It’s a lovely show!

The results of the Baltimore Summer Antiques Show (video version)

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

I’ve been working hard on the video version of my post from last Monday about the results of the Baltimore Summer Antiques Show. I’ve been using a software program from Serif called MoviePlus X6 Digital Edition. Some programs have steeper learning curves than others and this one has been a challenge. Anyway I was able to create a beginner’s video. It’s got lots of mistakes and is far from polished, but it will give you a lot more insight into the show than my normal blogs. Click here to view the video on YouTube. Hope you enjoy it.

Please let me know if you’d like to see more videos and I’ll try to create them. (This is not a generic question. I really need to get some feedback and this means you!) I’m sure as time goes by, they’ll get a little more professional.

I want to publicize this first video, so I will leave this post for the entire week. There will be no new post this Thursday.

There were approximately 300 people on line at the opening on Thursday morning

The 2016 edition of the Baltimore Summer Antiques Show is now history. It’s changed somewhat from the recent past. First and foremost is that the show was smaller. I heard reports that there were 100 fewer dealers. Attrition is a big problem in the antiques business as both the dealers and the public are aging. Not sure why so many dealers dropped out, but I could speculate retirement, health, death, disappointment with previous shows, etc. The show was still outstanding with really fabulous merchandise from an international group of dealers. I don’t think any of the buying public was disappointed, except possibly the smaller size.

I spoke to several dealers about their results and recorded them on video. I just bought a new software program to edit video (Serif MoviePlus 6) and I’m learning, but it definitely has a learning curve. If you’re an expert, please contact me as I have a few questions. I hope to have a reasonable video of the show with firsthand interviews with several dealers for my Thursday blog. You won’t want to miss my first attempt at video, so tune in Thursday. For those who want a quick summary, here goes. Most dealers I spoke to did fairly well. Personally we had a good show, but not great. It was 20% off from last year, but 50% ahead of the year before. Attendance was fairly good most days. If you want specifics, visit my blog on Thursday. (UPDATE – MONDAY)

All dealers walk around the show floor during the two days of setup buying from each other. I was able to purchase several wonderful Daum, Gallé and Argy-Rousseau vases during setup, which I’ll have at the show. Early buying is one of the advantages of being an exhibitor, which sometimes works out very well.

We don’t have a show scheduled for quite some time. We probably won’t exhibit at the NYC Pier Antiques Show, now that it’s become a very expensive version of the old show. The original show folded and was replaced by a show from the Palm Beach Show Group, who were forced to move after being shut out of the NY Armory.

A previous year in our booth

A previous year in our booth

The much anticipated Baltimore Summer Antiques Show has arrived! It opens to the public this Thursday at noon and continues until Sunday at 6 PM. It’s probably the best show of the year, especially now that the Miami shows will be in a tumult this coming winter. Both exhibitors and attendees come from all over the world, including Europe, South America and Japan. So wherever you are, you don’t have a good excuse. Baltimore has great restaurants, the Inner Harbor, street performers, stores, and the National Aquarium.

baltimore-8-2016(2)There’s still plenty of time to make arrangements to visit the show. I like to use Hotwire for the best deals on hotels. I just checked a 3-day stay in the Baltimore Inner Harbor area (walking distance to the show), starting on Thursday and departing on Sunday and found two 4-star hotels for $102 and $103/night, respectively. That’s a pretty great deal.

Saturday afternoon in my booth

Saturday afternoon in my booth

I’m starting to write this blog on Friday afternoon at 1 PM. (The show closes at 6 PM today.) The show is slow at the moment, with only a few guests walking around. Attendance has been fairly light. We’ve only made sales to two dealers pre-show and none to the public as of this point, but we’re keeping an open mind. Part of the reason we’re still exhibiting in Denver is because we made a stop on the way to a very good client who bought enough to make the trip worthwhile.

Update: Saturday, 1:50 PM. Business was a little slow yesterday, but not bad — one sale and one good trade. Today started off nicely with two good sales. Hope it continues.

Update: Saturday, 5:30 PM. A client from earlier today came back and made an additional purchase.

Update: Sunday, 4:00 PM. A dealer on the floor of the show came to my booth and bought several French cameo and Tiffany vases. That was followed by a client buying a red Tiffany Favrile vase. Then after the show closed a dealer on the floor decided to buy a monumental Daum vase that she had been considering. Looks like we’ll be coming back to Denver next summer. 🙂

baltimore-8-2016Our next show will be the eagerly anticipated Baltimore Summer Antiques Show, August 25-28, 2016. It’s the best show of the summer and maybe now the best of the year (with all the changes coming this winter in Miami). People fly in from all over the world to attend, including from as far away as Japan. If you haven’t yet visited, you should. It’s big with some of the best national and international dealers. You’ll also enjoy Baltimore. Hope to see you there!

In the meantime, we’re very much in business, as witnessed by the 10 or more new vases I just listed (and more coming every day). Call or email me with your wants or items for sale. If you have what I’m looking for, I’m paying the highest prices. My decisions are quick and my payments just as quick. Just snap a photo and email it to me.

We got a good start yesterday

We got a good start yesterday

Yesterday was the first day of setup for the Denver World Wide Antique Show. Everything went very smoothly. We finished about 60% of the work, which will make for an easy day today. Since we exhibit in Denver only once a year, our booth changes each time. This time we have the first booth in the first aisle to the left, as you enter the show.

I didn’t buy anything from other dealers yesterday, but I did sell one vase. Other dealers have expressed interest in purchasing other items, so that will be a nice start to the show.

I’ve been buying great glass and lamps since our last show at the Chicago Botanic Gardens in April. It will all be on display. Come to the show and take a look. The show opens to the public this Friday at 10 AM and continues until Sunday at 4 PM. Hope to see you there.

The show is medium-size — just right for the Denver market. The quality is better than you might expect for a local show. Don’t expect a flea market with a lot of junk. If you’re anywhere in greater Denver area, you should visit, as you won’t be disappointed. My display will be top-notch and many others will be too.

We’ll have a large selection of Tiffany Studios lamps, including an 18″ Peony. We’ll also have a fine selection of Handel reverse-painted and Pairpoint puffy lamps. Our French glass collection will be second to none and will include extensive examples of Daum Nancy’s and Gallé’s works. Our American glass collection will include superior examples of Tiffany Favrile glass. In addition, we’ll have great bronzes, American and European art pottery and many miscellaneous examples, too numerous to mention.
