The Morristown Armory Antiques Show finished yesterday, November 2nd, after a brief two-day run. I had vowed after the last Morristown show not to return, but Allison Kohler, the show promoter, convinced me otherwise. Unfortunately, she won’t be able to convince me the next time.

Attendance was moderate for a small show, but there weren’t enough strong buyers. My inventory was light-years beyond the other dealers, so we needed the well-heeled attendees to step up to the plate to make it worthwhile. I made a few small sales, so it’s possible we broke even, but I have better things to do than break even after all the time, energy and money invested. It’s a shame. Allison Kohler is a good promoter and I like to do her shows, but business is business. If I can’t do enough business to earn a buck, I can’t come back. So as of now, I’ve sworn off the whole state of New Jersey and would only return for some extraordinary circumstance.

Morristown-10-2014The Morristown Armory Antiques Show will open this Saturday, November 1st, at 10 AM and close on Sunday, November 2nd, at 5 PM. The Morristown Armory is a nice facility, just outside of town, with plenty of parking. Setup is easy with vehicles allowed to drive right up to their booths. It’s a quick show, with immediate results — either you did well or not. The quality of the show is usually quite good, so it’s worth a trip from anywhere in the greater NY, NJ, CT, or PA area.

We’ll be bringing some outstanding new objects that we’ve just recently acquired, including a fabulous Martin Brothers bird — the first one in a long time. Additionally, we’ll have new Tiffany Studios lamps, including two fine Linenfold examples, a wonderful 18″ Handel scenic lamp, a Daum Nancy scenic blownout vase, an Amphora portrait vase, English cameo vases, and numerous other items. It will be one of the best displays we’ve ever done.

Our next show, of four in a row, will be the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show, in a suburb of Chicago. That will be followed by the Kansas City Antiques Expo, and then our final show of 2014, back at the Pier in NYC for the usual November show. Remember to check my website for the latest items and keep reading my blog. Tune in Monday for the results of the Morristown Armory Antiques Show.

The results of the Morristown Antiques Show, October 26-28, 2012

Saturday afternoon at my booth

It’s 4:00 PM on Sunday as I start to write this blog. The show has not gone well and it appears likely the best I’ll do is break even. I can think of a lot better things to do than set up a show, spend the time and energy and then break even. However, I did buy a few things at the show that should be profitable down the road, so in the end, the show could become a slight winner.

Attendance was a little better on Sunday

I don’t really understand the reason. The show itself was very nice — filled with high quality dealers, located in a wealthy area of New Jersey, and well ran by Allison Kohler, the head of JMK Shows. Many shows are shrinking, but Allison was able to fill her show with quality dealers. I know more than a few show promoters who would give their right arms to be able to do the same. Hurricane Sandy, bearing down on the Northeast, may have had something to do with lower attendance, but that can’t be the whole explanation. (More on the hurricane in my Thursday blog.)

Some of the very nice displays at the show

Personally I had very little interest and few sales. I brought some really great items that should have garnered more attention, but all I got was a ho-hum response. I have high hopes the reception in New York City at the Pier Show the weekend of November 17-18 will be much better. I’ll keep you informed.

Just purchased this incredible 12″ Schneider padded and wheel-carved Medallion vase

I just purchased this rare, special Tiffany Studios red decorated Favrile vase

Look around my website. There are many items for sale, sold items with prices and free lessons about glass and lamps. I regularly add Tiffany vases, lamps and desk accessories, as well as French cameo glass by Galle and Daum Nancy and etchings by Louis Icart. Here’s the link. Philip Chasen Antiques.

The Northeast has been hammered with several major snowstorms this winter, with the latest one starting last Thursday. The rain/snow line was I-95 in New Jersey, with snow to the west. Unfortunately Morristown, NJ is west of the line, so the show started out with one strike against it. Many people called the show management to see if the show was canceled, but conditions improved rapidly, so there was no problem. The show opened on time, but attendance on Saturday was a little slower than normal. Sunday attendance returned to normal.

Sales on Saturday were lackluster with interest in Tiffany desk pieces and Fulper pottery. Sales on Sunday were dismal, but interest was strong in a couple of important items that may sell after the show.

I still haven’t made up my mind as to whether I’ll return to exhibit in Morristown. I’ll wait to see if any sales develop after the show. Right now, it’s probable that I won’t be back. It’s not enough for people to admire my display. The local people have to support the show by purchasing from the exhibitors or the exhibitors won’t be back.

I’m taking a lot of time to add new items to my website. I’ve already listed new items under Gallé glass (including a blownout vase), Daum Nancy glass and Tiffany Studios glass. Soon I’ll be adding pottery by Newcomb College, Marblehead and Rookwood. Please take a look, as every day I’m adding more. Click on this link chasenantiques.com.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, a surprise!

Lia and Bill feeding the turkeys

Lia and Bill feeding the turkeys

OK, we’re loading the van, preparing for the Morristown Armory Antiques Show this coming weekend, when Lia (my wife) calls me in the office and says “You’ve got to come down right away and see this!”. So I go downstairs to the driveway and guess what? Lia and Bill (my employee) are feeding five wild turkeys. I’ve lived on Long Island for over 30 years and I’ve never even seen one wild turkey, let alone five, so imagine my surprise! Nassau County is on Long Island and doesn’t have many wild animals. I’ve seen rabbits, raccoons, fox, one owl, various small birds and once a very large bird — a blue heron, but no deer or other large mammals. What is the meaning of their timing? Were they offering themselves for Thanksgiving dinner? We made a lot of jokes, but there’s no way I could do it.

Hey, lady! Any more bread?

Hey, lady! Any more bread?

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. It’s a wonderful time to get together with family and friends and actually be thankful for all of our blessings. At this time of year, let us be especially thankful to all of our brave young men and women in the military who are in harm’s way around the world. May they all come home safely and soon!
