The results of the NYC Big Flea Antiques Market, January 19-21, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

A few of the Gallé and Daum vases in our booth

It’s 12:30 PM on Saturday as I begin to write this blog. The show will end today at 7 PM, having opened at 9 AM today and yesterday. There were almost no people for the first hour, so the show should have opened at 10 AM. Closing today at 7 PM will be a burden. There will be no people here the last hour or two. The show promoters should shorten the hours to make it easier on the dealers. The public will have enough hours to do their shopping.

We sold this beautiful Gallé Chrysanthemum vase at the show

As of now, we’ve had very few sales, but those few sales coupled with a good purchase pre-show added up to a modest success. If we sell more today, it will be a success, period.

More Gallé and Daum in our booth

UPDATE: Saturday, 7 PM. The show is over and unfortunately it ended with a bust. No sales at all on what should have been the busiest and best day. Attendance was a little bit better today, but overall attendance ranged from very light to light. A few of my good clients showed up today, but no one made a purchase. It was a long, boring show that ended with very few sales and a small profit. Beats the pants off a loss, but still quite disappointing.

Now we’re headed to Miami for important shows, beginning with the Airport Show on February 3rd. This year may be the turning point for the show becoming the more important of the two Miami shows. If you missed us in New York City, don’t miss us in Miami.

The Original Miami Antique Show follows the Miami Airport Show, moving from Miami Beach to a new venue. If you can’t make both shows, make sure you visit this one.

I’ve been listing on my website many of the new items I’ve recently purchased and I’ll be listing more in the near future. Please check my site as often as you can.

The crowd at the opening on Thursday

The NYC Big Flea Antiques Market opened today, Thursday, January 19, and will run through Saturday, January 21, at 7 PM. It’s located at the Manhattan Center, Historic Hammerstein Ballroom, 34th St. and 8th Ave. in New York City. The show opened at 1 PM with a nice little crowd and a flurry of activity. By mid-afternoon it had slowed down, but hopefully more people will show up later and tomorrow. I’m guessing Saturday will be the busiest day.

Our booth

Setup was a much bigger hassle than usual. Our booth is small and on a stage several steps up, so getting everything into the booth was difficult and took several hours. We had to finish setting up this morning. Too much pressure without enough space or time, but we got it done, though not at the usual relaxed pace.

A sample of the Tiffany Favrile glass in our booth

The show was off to a good start with a very good purchase from another dealer on the floor, plus a nice sale, but it’s still far from being a good show. There’s plenty of time left. Tune in Monday for the results.

Following the show, we’ll be heading to the all-important Miami shows, beginning with the Airport Show on February 3rd. This year may be the turning point for the show becoming the more important of the two Miami shows. If you can’t see us in New York City, don’t miss us in Miami.

The NYC Big Flea Antiques Market opens this Thursday, January 19, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

This week we’ll be exhibiting at our first show of the new year, the NYC Big Flea Antiques Market at the Manhattan Center, Historic Hammerstein Ballroom, 34th St. and 8th Ave. in New York City. The show opens on Thursday at 1 PM and runs until Saturday at 7 PM. The facility is closed on Sunday, which explains the unusual show days. This is our only show in New York City, so please come and visit. The weather forecast for this coming week predicts 50s, so that should make for easy traveling.

We’ll have this fabulous B&S internally decorated vase at the show

We will be there with all of our new and exciting purchases including a sensational selection of French and American glass and lamps. You won’t want to miss us.

Don’t be fooled by the name NYC Big Flea Market. There will be plenty of fine merchandise at the show. It’s the perfect week to visit as there will be more exciting antiques events in New York City at the same time, as it’s Americana Week. Click here for a link to some of the shows, lectures, museums, etc.

Following the show, we’ll be heading to the all-important Miami shows, beginning with the Airport Show on February 3rd. This year may be the turning point for the show becoming the more important of the two Miami shows. If you can’t see us in New York City, don’t miss us in Miami.

The January NYC Big Flea Antiques Market show is changing venues and dates

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

First and foremost, I wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

Dee Dee Sides, CEO & Promoter of the NYC Big Flea Antiques Market, sent an email this past weekend about a forced change of dates and venue for the January show at the Lexington Ave. Armory. She wrote “We received notice from the 69th Regiment Armory and the state of NY that they just discovered the Lexington Avenue Armory has high levels of lead toxicity and they are having to close the facility.”

The Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center

The original show was scheduled for the weekend of January 21-22, 2017, but due to the new venue’s hours, the new dates will be Thursday – Saturday, January 19-21, 2017. The show will now be held at The Manhattan Center, in two adjacent ballrooms, including the Hammerstein Ballroom, 34th St. and 8th Ave, NYC. It’s a central location, a block from the world-famous, original Macy’s store. The new hours will be Thursday, Jan. 19th, 1-7 PM, Friday, Jan. 20th, 9 AM – 7 PM, and Saturday, Jan. 21st, 9 AM – 7 PM. No show on Sunday.

We will be bringing really great, fresh merchandise that was accumulated since our last show at the beginning of November. We’ve been buying like crazy in anticipation of good selling at this show and the Florida shows. Hope you can make it. It will be a new experience for us and probably you too.

I just listed this killer Daum Prairie pitcher for sale on my website

I’ve been listing on my website many of the new items I’ve recently purchased and I’ll be listing more in the near future. Please check my site as often as you can.

After the NYC Flea Market, we’ll be traveling to Miami for the Miami Antiques + Art + Design Show, February 3 – 5, 2017. This is the airport show, which will be new and improved, with many additional exhibitors. The changes are happening because the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show will no longer be in Miami Beach, instead changing its name to The Original Miami Antique Show and moving to a new location in southwest Miami. It will all make for an interesting winter season.

The opening crowd on Saturday morning

The opening crowd on Saturday morning

11:30 AM Saturday It’s slow as I start to write this blog. There was a modest crowd at the 9 AM opening, but not nearly enough people to fill the pier. There haven’t been too many questions as of now and one small sale. Hopefully things will pick up.

1:15 PM Saturday in front of my booth

1:15 PM Saturday in front of my booth

1:15 PM Saturday There are many more people walking around, but few questions and slight interest. No additional sales. I’m really bored and restless.

4:45 PM Saturday Attendance and interest picked up the last couple of hours. Made a couple of decent sales, but overall the show isn’t going well. Unfortunately the show is open until 7 PM today. I’m going to need a stiff drink when I get home. 🙂

9:00 AM Sunday Yesterday ended with a whimper, not a bang. After the two sales, the rest of the day was dead. Couple that with the extra long hours of the show and you can imagine it was insufferable. Hoping today will be a better day, but I’m not optimistic based on yesterday’s response.

12:00 PM Sunday There were very few people walking around this morning and almost no questions. Doesn’t look like it’s going to be a good day.

A view down my aisle at 2:10 PM on Sunday

A view down my aisle at 2:10 PM on Sunday

5:00 PM Sunday The show is over. We gave away many business cards — a sure sign the show wasn’t going well. There were a couple of reasonably serious inquiries, but no sales. We didn’t even make our expenses. Ugh! Unfortunately, it’s unlikely we’ll return.

winnetka-10-2015Our next show will be at the Winnetka Community House in Winnetka, IL, November 6-8, 2015. We used to exhibit at shows in the greater Chicago area 4-6 times yearly. Most of them have disappeared, so we now only exhibit in Chicago twice a year, once in the fall in Winnetka and once in the spring in Glencoe at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. Too bad, because we like Chicago and have lots of friends and clients. We’re really looking forward to seeing you at the show, so please put the dates in your calendar.

I’ve got the whole crew setting up our booth

Yesterday was the first day of setup for the NYC Big Flea Market at Pier 94. The first day went smoothly except for getting to the Pier. Unfortunately we got stuck in traffic due to the Pope’s visit, so we were delayed starting. After that, everything went well. We should have the booth looking great for the Saturday morning start.

Another view of the setup in progress

Last year we met quite a few new people at the show. Even though the venue is the same as the November Pier Antiques Show, the promoters use different advertising and publicity, attracting different people. Hopefully the same will happen this year and we’ll make sales to new clients (but all old clients are welcomed and encouraged). The show opens at 9 AM on Saturday and closes at 5 PM on Sunday. The Pope will be gone by Saturday, so traffic should be back to normal. Hope to see you there!

nyc-big-flea-9-2015The NYC Big Flea Market will open to the public this coming Saturday, September 26th, at 9 AM and close on Sunday, September 27th, at 5 PM. The show is an offshoot of the DC Big Flea Market by promoter D’Amore Promotions. It will be held at Pier 94, 54th St. and the Hudson River, on Manhattan’s West Side. This is the same facility where the customary Pier Antiques Show takes place twice a year in November and March.

Last year on Saturday afternoon in front of my booth

Last year on Saturday afternoon in front of my booth

Last year was the first time for the show and it worked out well for us. Attendance was good, interestingly with mostly different people than the usual Pier Antique shows, probably due to the different advertising and promotion. That’s a good thing. I don’t want to see the same people in the same facility in September and again in November. Last year we made some nice sales and had a profitable show.

We'll have this fabulous B&S Orchids vase at the show

We’ll have this fabulous B&S Orchids vase at the show

We’re bringing a really great selection of American and French glass and lamps by Tiffany Studios, Daum Nancy and Gallé, to name just a few. It will be worth your time and effort to visit this new and different show. Many of the dealers don’t ordinarily exhibit in New York, so the displays will be totally different.

Thursday’s blog will be delayed until Friday, so I can post from the show floor and next Monday’s blog will have the results!

In the more sad news category, I learned of the death of Don Williams, veteran antique show dealer, who passed away on September 16, 2015. I tried to find an image of Don, but he was old school, so he’s not on the Internet. He was a gentleman and will be missed.

There was a good crowd inside and outside just before opening on Saturday

There was a good crowd inside and outside just before opening on Saturday

The NYC Big Flea Market completed its maiden show, September 27-28, 2014. Attendance was good on Saturday, with lots of interest, but sales were not commensurate. The crowd was younger than at the November and March Pier shows, with lots of new faces. Sunday attendance wasn’t quite as good, but still significant. Sunday resulted in two good sales, a Tiffany lamp and a Pairpoint lamp.

Saturday afternoon in front of my booth

Saturday afternoon in front of my booth

It was tough sitting at the show — the hours were ridiculously long — 10 hours on Saturday and 8 hours on Sunday. It would have been less of a problem if we were busy selling all day, but we weren’t. Add the pungent smell of sauerkraut all day, from the food vendor at the entrance, for an unpleasant experience. What really counted were sales. Although we didn’t make many, the results were good enough for us to return in April, for the spring edition of the show. That means we’ll exhibit twice in the same facility within a few weeks, in March and April. I don’t think that will be a bad thing, since the two shows attract different crowds.

In asking around to just a few dealers, I got the following comments. Arnie Small of Barbara Gerr Antiques (American pottery) remarked “The show was OK. We saw more young people come through than at other shows. The gate was good.” Virgil Rogers of Only Authentics (handbags) said “The show was better than the normal Pier show in November. The crowd was large. I sold some very expensive Chanel and Hermès handbags.” Jeff Myers (glass) was enthusiastic. “I thought it was good. I’m going to come back in April. The crowd was completely different.” Peter Boehm of Dualities Antiques (general) of Larchmont, NY, didn’t feel the same way. “My show was horrible. The worst I’ve ever done.” Finally David Smirnofff of From Here to Antiquity (paintings) of Cheshire, CT, said “I sold a lot of inexpensive items. I’m disappointed that it was promoted as a flea market rather than a treasure hunt.”

Now for a little time off. No shows until November, when we have four in a row. We’ll start in New Jersey at the Morristown Armory, then travel to Chicago for the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka show, followed by the Kansas City Antiques Expo, ending up back at the Pier in NYC for the usual November show. Remember to check my website for the latest items and keep reading my blog. We’ll spend a lot of time finding some great new items for our November circuit.

The NYC Big Flea Market will open this coming weekend and run from Saturday, September 27, at 9 AM, until Sunday, September 28, at 5 PM. The promoters, D’Amore Promotions, will be using the same Pier 94 that is used by USA Antique Shows for their November and March shows. This is the first time for this show, with an entirely new cast of dealers.

D’Amore Promotions produces the DC Big Flea Market in Chantilly, Virginia and the Fredericksburg Big Flea Market in Fredericksburg, Virginia. They decided to duplicate their successful Virginia shows in New York City. Pretty gutsy move. A successful Virginia show doesn’t necessarily translate into a successful New York City show. It’s not exactly Field of Dreams — if you build it, he will come. First you’ve got to convince the dealers to exhibit at your new show. They needed a good response and got it. The show will be full, with many new dealers who never exhibit in New York City. The next step is to fill the place with buyers, who will make the dealers happy and so will begin a virtuous cycle.

I’ve got a good feeling about this show. I expect different people to attend, which hopefully will be a good thing. I’m bringing lots of fresh items to the show, which is always good for business. Look for the results next Monday.
