The results of the 2018 Original Miami Antique Show, February 9-12, 2018

Thursday’s post will be delayed until Monday to include the results of the the 31st National Arts & Crafts Conference this weekend.

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

We bought this fabulous Tiffany lamp at the show and sold it before the show was over

The 2018 Original Miami Antique show at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition Center is now history. Personally we did okay, certainly not great, selling mostly French cameo glass and Tiffany lamps and desk items. The pace was plodding, with a sale here and there. Most of the action took place each day before 4 PM, with very little after then.

Saturday afternoon in my booth

The coolest booth in the entire show, Eduardo Cohen, Buenos Aires, Argentina, displayed model airplanes and ships. Unfortunately I believe he had a poor show.

It’s a huge show that’s spread out over several buildings, with one whole building filled with just jewelry dealers. The other buildings were full of a very diverse group of antique dealers.

Monday was a total bust. I have no idea why show management insists on ending a show on Monday. Four-day shows should run Thursday –  Sunday. It put me in a foul mood, so I didn’t feel like asking other dealers how they did. Sorry. Blame the management.

The construction on the Washington Ave. (east) side of the Miami Beach Convention Center is ahead of the west side.

We’ve signed a contract for next year’s show at the renovated Miami Beach Convention Center. Got my fingers crossed that the construction proceeds smoothly so we can return to Miami Beach.

By the time you read this post we’ll be on our way to Asheville, NC, to exhibit at one of our favorite shows of the year, the 31st National Arts & Crafts Conference at the Grove Park Inn, this coming weekend, February 16 – 18. It’s a great show that I recommend you make the effort to attend.

I recently listed some of the new items on my website and will list more every week. Click Philip Chasen Antiques to take a look. I will make every effort to actively list new items as often as time permits. We’re still very much in business between shows, so please don’t hesitate to email or call. I always strive to offer the finest objects for sale on my website and at every show. There are many items for sale, sold items with prices and free lessons about glass and lamps. And remember to keep reading my blog.

We spent yesterday setting up our booth for the Original Miami Antique show at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition Center. Our booth is a bit smaller than last week, but setup is still going smoothly. We’ll have it all done for Friday’s opening at 11 AM.

We’ll have this fabulous, just acquired, Tiffany lamp in our booth

The show is much larger than last week with many additional dealers with incredible and varied selections. Nobody will be disappointed when they visit this immense show. It continues through Monday at 5 PM.

Based on the action last week, I’m cautiously optimistic. I will delay my usual post-show Monday post until Tuesday, since the show ends on Monday.

Next week we’ll exhibit at one of our favorite shows of the year, the 31st National Arts & Crafts Conference at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC, February 16 – 18.

The results of the Original Miami Antique Show, February 10-13, 2017

No Thursday post this week because this week’s post was postponed to Tuesday. Next Monday’s post will have the results of The Grove Park Inn Arts & Crafts Conference.

We sold this beautiful Daum Nancy Blackbird vase at the show

The Original Miami Antique Show finished its four-day run yesterday at its new venue, the Miami-Dade County Fair Expo Center. We had a reasonably good show, especially compared to my low expectations. French glass sold best, as usual. In asking around, some dealers did fairly well and others complained bitterly.

Here’s some of the scuttlebutt surrounding the show.

1. Many of the dealers and attendees were satisfied with the new location because of the extensive free parking. You probably remember what a pain parking was in Miami Beach.

2. Many of the heavy hitters who usually attended the show in Miami Beach didn’t attend at this location. There were plenty of people, but fewer qualified buyers among them. That resulted in a lack of electricity that the show had in Miami Beach. It was probably a combination of many things including uncertainty surrounding the new venue. One person told me that Pres. Trump’s travel ban caused some Europeans not to come. (I did notice far fewer Europeans than usual). I wonder if the Zika-carrying mosquitoes affected anyone’s decision. (That’s pure speculation on my part.)

The present state of the Miami Beach Convention Center

3. Rumors had been circulating since last year that the show would not be permitted back into the Miami Beach Convention Center after construction is complete. The latest information is that was totally untrue. The show will move back into the Convention Center in January or February, 2019, if the construction is complete. That means only one more year at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds. Here’s hoping.

4. Other rumors had it that the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds was in an awful neighborhood in cow country. Again, totally untrue. It’s in an up and coming neighborhood that is perfectly fine and totally safe.

I recorded a short video of the show including several dealers reactions. They skew to better comments because most of the dealers who did poorly were unwilling to go on camera to say so. Click here to view it.

Today we’re off to the historic and beautiful Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC for the Arts & Crafts Conference this coming weekend. It’s one of our favorite shows of the year, which you will surely enjoy if you make the effort to attend. Hope you can make it.

Setting up at The Original Miami Antique Show, February 8, 2017

I spent a lot of time on Monday creating a video of last week’s show, the Miami Antiques + Art + Design show. It’s not a polished, professional presentation, but I think you’ll enjoy watching it. Click here to view it. PLEASE send me an email and let me know what you think. philip@chasenantiques.com.

Yesterday was the first day of setup for the Original Miami Antique Show at its new venue at the Miami-Dade County Fair Expo Center in southwest Miami. I didn’t know what to expect and truly I was surprised. It’s an extra 15-20 minutes drive, but I assure you it’s worth it. The show is huge with many, many high-quality dealers. I can’t think of a better show to travel to. The quality and the size make it a must-see show!

I’ve put together a very short video to give you a little taste. Click here.

The show opens to the public this Friday at 11 AM and continues until Monday at 5 PM. Make sure you visit!!

We’ll have this just-purchased, incredible Daum Nancy Blackbird vase at the show.

We always bring a strong inventory to Miami, but this year is exceptional. You won’t believe the quantity and quality of the French and American glass and lamps we’ll have at the show. We had to rent an additional showcase beyond the eight we already bring just to fit it all. Come and visit the show. It’s always good but this year it will be great!

Making sense of the new order at the antique shows in Miami this February

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

The Miami antique shows will be turned on their heads this year. Here’s my take on what’s to come, but first a little background.

Our booth at a previous Miami Airport show

The date order of two important antique shows in Miami has always been the Airport show first (that’s the one at the Miami Merchandise Mart), followed immediately by the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Over the years, the Airport show shrank until it finally failed and was immediately replaced by a cloned show. The public wasn’t able to tell that anything had changed, but it had behind the scenes. For more about the details, click here for one of my previous blogs. As the Airport show shrank, so did the attendance. Many dealers and many attendees skipped the Airport show altogether and arrived in Miami only for the second show.

An artist’s rendering of the future Miami Beach Convention Center

In the meantime, the second show, the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show, was forced out of the Miami Beach Convention Center because of construction. Click here if you want to read about the details. The transformed new show will change its venue to the Miami-Dade County Fair Expo Center and its name to the Original Miami Antique Show, removing the word Beach from its title. Its dates of February 10 – February 13, 2017 will still follow the Airport show.

Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition Center

So what has happened and what will happen? Many of the dealers weren’t thrilled by the move to the new venue and have jumped ship, electing instead to exhibit at the Airport show and skip the second show, the Original Miami Antique Show. Other dealers, including myself, are going to give both shows a chance.

Rosemary Krieger, owner and promoter of the Airport show (now named the Miami Antiques + Art + Design Show), told me that the upcoming February, 2017 show has gotten much larger, with plans to get even bigger next year. Last year only 60 dealers exhibited at the Airport show, while this year the entire first floor will be full with 200 dealers. The second floor will have a special exhibition of Art Deco photography (for sale) presented by the Art Deco Buenos Aires Argentina Institute. If things go well this year, the show will expand to the second floor next year, bringing it back full circle to where it was years ago. That would be an exciting and ironic turn of events.

I’m on the fence about the newly relocated Miami Beach show. If the public and the dealers reject the new venue, the show will fail, and the Airport show will benefit. If it does well, the shows will be similar to what they’ve traditionally been. I suggest when you make your plans to visit the shows in Miami next month, you arrive early to include the Airport show. If you miss the first show, you may miss what could become the more exciting and important of the two. Tune in in next month and I’ll let you know how it all shakes out.

The Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center

In the meantime, come visit me at the new NYC Big Flea Antiques Market at the Manhattan Center, Historic Hammerstein Ballroom, 34th St. and 8th Ave. in New York City. We’ll be there Thursday – Saturday, January 19-21, 2017.
