The results of the Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show, May 19-21, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

The Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show ended yesterday after a three-day run from May 19-21, 2017. Most dealers were pleased enough with the show that they will be returning for next year’s edition. A few exhibitors did poorly, but that always happens at any show.

We sold this rare and beautiful Daum Bee vase at the preview party

The show started off with a dud of a preview party on Thursday night. The sponsor of the party, the Illinois Executive Mansion, failed to turn out enough people, so the party was very lightly attended. Additionally there was only cheese and crackers, bad wine and no liquor. Ugh! We were able to make a nice sale to one of our best clients, but that had nothing to do with the party. I already spoke to the promoter who said she will have a new sponsor for next year’s preview party.

Saturday afternoon in our booth

Attendance was moderate for most of the show and business was more or less steady. Each day started out very slowly, and picked up as the day went on. We made sales every day, so we’re pleased. French glass sold best (so what else is new?).

We sold this special Tiffany Studios Pine Needle double frame on Saturday

We’re looking forward to next year’s edition of the show. Surely there will be some changes in the exhibitors, with a few dropping out and a few replacements, but the overall quality will continue to be very high. The city of Chicago can be proud of the show.

Our next show is the Denver World Wide Antique Show in mid-July, so we’ll take some time to smell the roses. I’ll be buying and selling in the meantime, so be in touch if you’re doing either.

I recently listed some new items on my website and I’ll be listing more in the near future. Please check my site as often as you can.

There are many items for sale, sold items with prices and free lessons about glass and lamps. And remember to keep reading my blog.

Setting up at the Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show, May 16-17, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

We finished setting up yesterday at the Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show. We were given plenty of time from Tuesday through Thursday, but it went so well that we finished a day early. Yay! We now have today to play, so we’ll probably go to the Art Institute of Chicago to see their fabulous collection of French Impressionist art before tonight’s preview party (where I hope there’s plenty of free alcohol!)

We’re very pleased with our booth

The show is really great with high quality dealers from all over the world, including the UK and Argentina. I hope that attendance is fabulous and the dealers do well so it becomes a fixture on the show calendar. Tune in Monday for the results.

Only Authentics, New York, NY

Jeff R. Bridgman Antiques, York County, PA

Jayne Thompson Antiques, Harrodsburg, KY

Greenwald Antiques, Cleveland, OH

The show opens to the public tomorrow, Friday, May 19th, at 11 AM, and continues until Sunday at 5 PM. You won’t regret the trip to the show, so I hope to see you this weekend.

The Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show at the Chicago Merchandise Mart opens to the public this Friday, May 19, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

I’m thrilled the revived Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show will return to the Chicago Merchandise Mart, after an absence of four years. It opens to the public this Friday, May 19th, at 11 AM, and continues until Sunday at 5 PM, with a preview party on Thursday night.

The Chicago Merchandise Mart

I thought an antique show would never return to the Mart after the show closed in May, 2013. The Palm Beach Show Group forced the closing of the show by making dealers decide between exhibiting at the Mart or the Navy Pier. Dealers chose the Navy Pier, which hosted one show and then failed. I hoped the Merchandise Mart show would be revived the following year, but it didn’t happen until this year. Click here for the details from my blog post of January 6, 2014.

The new edition of the show will have a new promoter, Dolphin Promotions, headed by Rosemary Krieger. If the show goes well, it will become a permanent fixture, a result I’m hoping for.

We’ll have this wonderful Daum Nancy tumbler at the show

As usual, we’ve brought a fabulous inventory of French and American glass and lamps. I know you’ll enjoy the show and my display in particular. This fabulous show is one you should attend, no matter the distance. Please stop into my booth and say hello.

The results of the 2017 Michigan Modernism Art & Antiques Show, April 22-23, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Friday, 8 PM. I’m starting to write this post on Friday night from the preview party of the 2017 Michigan Modernism Art & Antiques Show. Silly me thinking I might sell something at a preview party. I should have hired a booth sitter and gone to the movies instead. The show opens tomorrow morning at 10 AM. Got my fingers crossed.

We sold this gorgeous Daum padded and wheel-carved Poppy vase at the show

UPDATE: Saturday, 4 PM. Attendance has been moderate all day, with decent interest, but only one good sale. Thanks to the client who made my day. I know you read my blog.

There were people in my booth on Saturday afternoon

UPDATE: Sunday, 6 PM. The show is over and I’m disappointed. We made one small sale today and not much else happened. Two sales do not a show make. We just about broke even. I do see the possibility for better business at this show down the road, so we’re going to sign up for the October, 2017 edition. If we don’t see improvement, that will be it for Michigan.

The show is very pleasant to do. The space is comfortable, airy and well lit (but that’s actually a minus for a lamp dealer). The show promoter, Bob Bockius, has bent over backwards to please the dealers and the public, including free wine and beer. Here’s wishing him and the show good luck.

I’m really looking forward to our next show, the revived Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show at the Chicago Merchandise Mart. I was quite sad when it folded a few years ago as it was always one of my favorite shows. The new edition will have a new promoter, Dolphin Promotions, headed by Rosemary Krieger. There hasn’t been an antique show in downtown Chicago for several years, so I’m hoping this one will be met with a lot of enthusiasm. The show runs from May 18-21, 2017.

Setting up at the 2017 Michigan Modernism Art & Antiques Show, April 20, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Yesterday we spent the entire day setting up at the 2017 Michigan Modernism Art & Antiques Show in Southfield. It went very well for a variety of reasons including 1. We unloaded and set up the showcases on Wednesday. 2. We had an additional person helping, so there were four of us. 3. We had a huge booth, so we weren’t stepping all over each other. We finished in one day, which was quite an accomplishment. We’ll have the day off today, Friday, but we have to come back for the preview party this evening, 6:00 – 9:30 PM. I really hate preview parties, but I have a funny feeling that we might do some business at this party. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Thursday setup in our booth

We set up a killer booth, with the best assortment of French and American glass and lamps that we’ve ever brought. With the huge amount of space, we were able to set up a great booth with everything showing well. It looks great! We’re set to have a fabulous show if the buying public cooperates. If the show goes well, we’ll be thrilled to return. If it’s a bomb, goodbye Michigan.

Meyers-Huffman is setting up a beautiful booth at the show

The show opens to the public this Saturday at 10 AM and continues until Sunday at 5 PM. Please visit the show and do your part. If you want me to return, pay me a visit. Thanking you in advance!! Click here for more information.

The 2017 Michigan Modernism Art & Antiques Show opens to the public this Saturday, April 22, 2017

Thursday’s post will be delayed until Friday as setup in Southfield, MI doesn’t start until Thursday.

We’re traveling to Michigan this week to exhibit at the 2017 Michigan Modernism Art & Antiques Show in Southfield. We haven’t exhibited in the greater Detroit area in over 10 years, but at the encouragement of a fellow dealer, we’ve decided to give it another shot. I enjoyed doing the show years ago and hope that business is good so we can add it to our regular schedule. The show opens to the public this Saturday at 10 AM and continues until Sunday at 5 PM. There will be a preview party on Friday from 6 – 9:30 PM. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am about that. 🙁

We’ll have this killer Daum Nancy Spring scenic vase at the show

We’re bringing one of the strongest inventories we’ve ever carried, including an amazing selection of French and American glass and lamps by Tiffany Studios, Handel, Pairpoint, Daum Nancy and Gallé, to name a few.

Just got this Tiffany Studios 20″ diameter Linenfold table lamp with a rare Silver Dollar base

The dealer list will include important dealers with beautiful displays, including Alan & Adele Grodsky, Myers-Huffman Antiques, Del Giudice Antiques and Ray Kisber. For the complete list of dealers, click here.

If you’re anywhere in the greater Detroit area, it will be worth your while visiting the show. Click here for more information. I hope to see you there.

The results of the Charleston Antique Show, March 16-19, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

There’s no one in our booth at the preview party

Thursday evening, 7:50 PM. I’m starting to write this blog from the preview party on Thursday night. Those of you who follow my blog know my disdain for preview parties. Well this one is as bad or worse than most. There has been very little to no interest, so I occupy my time playing Spider Solitaire and drinking. What also makes it difficult is there are only hors d’oeuvres to eat. We will have to go to a restaurant after the preview.

We set up a nice booth for the show with limited resources

UPDATE: Friday, 4 PM. The show has been open since 10 AM and based upon the first day, the show will be a disaster. Not only haven’t we sold anything, we haven’t had many questions and no one seems to know what they’re looking at. I’m not completely giving up hope, but it’s not looking good.

On the other hand, the show promoters have set aside a room for dealers to rest and eat a complimentary, lovely lunch each day. Very nice.

We sold this Tiffany Studios 18″ diameter Lemon Leaf table lamp at the show

UPDATE: Saturday, 12 PM. Well, what do you know? We sold a Tiffany lamp to a lovely lady visiting from Missouri. At this point, we’re breaking even. If we sell something else, we’ll actually earn a profit. That would be a pleasant surprise.

UPDATE: Sunday, 5 PM. The show is over and the verdict is in. We will not be returning to exhibit in Charleston. One sale, which covered our expenses, is no reason to return to a show. There was a distinct lack of interest and knowledge. We only had a few questions in three days. Too bad, because everything about the show was nice, except the lack of business.

We will exhibit at the Charleston Antique Show, March 16-19, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

After a very difficult week that started with truck trouble, we will exhibit at the Charleston Antique Show this coming weekend. We had to leave most of our supplies in the truck, and two-thirds of our merchandise in New York, so our exhibition will be improvised. We had to buy all the basic supplies we always carry, like light bulbs, electric wires and fabric. We were able to rent a single showcase from a local dealer. But now it’s all new, so after exhibiting at hundreds and hundreds of shows, it’s like starting all over again. I’m not a fan.

We’re trying to figure our improvised display

The show opens with a preview party on Thursday night. I can’t tell you how thrilling that is. NOT! Then the show opens to the public on Friday at 10 AM and closes on Sunday at 5 PM. Charleston is a very nice city and I expect the public to be very friendly and courteous. What I don’t expect are sales. Exhibiting in Charleston was a shot in the dark, but not having our usual display makes me truly apprehensive about the results.

We’re making some progress

I hope I’m wrong, but I think this show will not end well. Tune in on Monday for the results.

Hopefully we’ll exhibit at the Charleston Antique Show this week, March 17-19, 2017

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

We’re scheduled to exhibit at the Charleston Antique Show this week, March 17-19, 2017, but it’s not sure at this moment. Not that we don’t want to, just that circumstances may prevent us.

My driver, Bill, showed up on Saturday to load the truck for our trip. The problems started immediately when the truck wouldn’t start. We finally brought a mechanic to the truck and he diagnosed a frozen starter motor. Since it was Saturday afternoon, we couldn’t get the part and would have to wait for Monday morning.

We were scheduled to fly to Charleston on Tuesday to begin setting up the show on Wednesday, but as you probably know, a huge Nor’easter is bearing down on the Northeast. So we were forced to fly to Charleston yesterday. Now we’re in Charleston and I’m biting my nails awaiting word from New York that the mechanic was able to fix the problem.

If Bill can load the truck and start driving by the afternoon, he just might be able to beat the brunt of the storm which threatens tremendous snow and wind from Washington, DC, to Boston.

UPDATE: Monday, 6:00 PM. The situation with the truck went from bad to worse. The truck couldn’t be started. It was towed to the dealer for repair. So we had to go to Plan B, take the van, with no showcases. So we’re going to exhibit at the show with tabletop lamps and glass. That is assuming Bill makes it safely through the storm. He left New York about 5 PM. Another update tomorrow.

UPDATE: Tuesday, 2:00 PM. It’s still up in the air if we can exhibit at the show. Now the van has transmission trouble and it’s 60/40 if Bill can make it all the way to Charleston. He’s in North Carolina at the moment, so I’ve got my fingers crossed.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 7:30 AM. The transmission on the van held up and Bill made it to Charleston. We were able to rent one showcase, so we’ll have a modified display, but not our usual. To make things worse, the problem with the truck was the starter motor. The mechanic who came to change the starter motor on the truck misdiagnosed the problem. Had he actually replaced the starter motor, we would have had the truck and all of our showcases, but that’s life. We have to play the cards we’re dealt.

The results of the Original Miami Antique Show, February 10-13, 2017

No Thursday post this week because this week’s post was postponed to Tuesday. Next Monday’s post will have the results of The Grove Park Inn Arts & Crafts Conference.

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

We sold this beautiful Daum Nancy Blackbird vase at the show

The Original Miami Antique Show finished its four-day run yesterday at its new venue, the Miami-Dade County Fair Expo Center. We had a reasonably good show, especially compared to my low expectations. French glass sold best, as usual. In asking around, some dealers did fairly well and others complained bitterly.

Here’s some of the scuttlebutt surrounding the show.

1. Many of the dealers and attendees were satisfied with the new location because of the extensive free parking. You probably remember what a pain parking was in Miami Beach.

2. Many of the heavy hitters who usually attended the show in Miami Beach didn’t attend at this location. There were plenty of people, but fewer qualified buyers among them. That resulted in a lack of electricity that the show had in Miami Beach. It was probably a combination of many things including uncertainty surrounding the new venue. One person told me that Pres. Trump’s travel ban caused some Europeans not to come. (I did notice far fewer Europeans than usual). I wonder if the Zika-carrying mosquitoes affected anyone’s decision. (That’s pure speculation on my part.)

The present state of the Miami Beach Convention Center

An artist’s rendering of the future Miami Beach Convention Center

3. Rumors had been circulating since last year that the show would not be permitted back into the Miami Beach Convention Center after construction is complete. The latest information is that was totally untrue. The show will move back into the Convention Center in January or February, 2019, if the construction is complete. That means only one more year at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds. Here’s hoping.

4. Other rumors had it that the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds was in an awful neighborhood in cow country. Again, totally untrue. It’s in an up and coming neighborhood that is perfectly fine and totally safe.

I recorded a short video of the show including several dealers reactions. They skew to better comments because most of the dealers who did poorly were unwilling to go on camera to say so. Click here to view it.

Today we’re off to the historic and beautiful Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC for the Arts & Crafts Conference this coming weekend. It’s one of our favorite shows of the year, which you will surely enjoy if you make the effort to attend. Hope you can make it.
