Christie’s South Kensington held its Interiors sale on June 8, 2016. Included in the sale was a nice grouping of Loetz vases, some of which did well.

Top lot of the group was #320, a signed, 6½” vase, decorated with iridescent hearts and swirled decoration, in beautiful shades of pink and red. It doubled it’s high estimate of £2,500, realizing £5,625 ($8,173), including buyer’s premium.

I thought highly of lot #318. It was signed, but small at 4½” tall. It featured gold iridescent drip decoration over a deep salmon, wave-decorated background. It sold for 50% above its high estimate of £1,800, realizing £2,500 ($3,633), including buyer’s premium.

Some good results at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ Modern Design sale, May 12, 2016

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers held a Modern Design sale on May 12, 2016, with some good results.

Loetz Phänomen vase, Hindman lot #267

Loetz Phänomen vase, Hindman lot #267

Lot #267 was a rare and desirable 6¾” Loetz decorated Phänomen vase, property of the estate of John P. Landis. It flew past its pre-sale estimate of $4,000 – $6,000, bringing $20,000, including buyer’s premium. I knew how rare it was so I was on the phone bidding, but I never even got to make the first bid — way too much for a dealer.

Left, Hindman lot #494. Right, the original candlestick.

Lot #494 was a rare Tiffany Studios candlestick that needed professional help. Regardless, it easily exceeded its high estimate of $12,000, realizing $17,500, including buyer’s premium. Someone had converted it into a ridiculous lamp by removing some original parts and adding modern parts. With the right professional help, it’s possible to find original parts and return it back into its original state as a candlestick. Almost surely that’s what’s going to happen. Nobody in their right mind would pay $17,500 unless they could do it. Should be worth $35,000+ when it’s done.

Tiffany Greek Key table lamp, Hindman lot #495

Tiffany Greek Key table lamp, Hindman lot #495

A Tiffany Studios 16″ diameter Greek Key table lamp, lot #495, brought a decent price. It sold within its pre-sale estimate of $15,000 – $25,000, realizing $23,750, including buyer’s premium.

Astonishing price paid for a Loetz vase at Susanin’s Premiere Auction, August 1, 2015

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

Rare Loetz vase, Susanin's lot #153

Rare Loetz vase, Susanin’s lot #153

Susanin’s held their Premiere Auction on Saturday, August 1, 2015. Included in the sale was a rare 10¼” Loetz vase with sunset on the ocean decoration, lot #153.

loetz-susanins-2I was on the telephone bidding because I knew it was a rare and desirable vase. I just didn’t know how rare and desirable. I had seen it in the books, but not in person. In my mind, it was a $10,000 – $15,000 vase at retail, so I was prepared to bid $6,000 – $8,000, against an estimate of $300/500. Ordinarily that would have made me a strong bidder, but not this time.

There is no better auction ammunition than a fresh, important item with a ridiculously low estimate. It means the item is there to be sold, so everyone thinks they’re in the game. Fresh meat to the lions. Before I could get in my first bid, the price was up to $40,000. It finally sold for $50,000 + buyer’s premium = $62,500. Wow! I found out most of the bidding was from Austria. Makes sense, because the top collectors often prefer antiques from their home countries. The vase is going home, as is often the case. The Chinese and the Russians have been buying back their best antiques for years.

So now I’ve expanded my Loetz knowledge base and yours too. If you see a signed Loetz vase with sunset on the ocean decoration, please call me.
