The results of the Birchwood Manor Antiques Show, July 27-28, 2013

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

The Birchwood Manor Antiques Show was held this past weekend, July 27-28, 2013. Attendance was slow to moderate on Saturday, with few questions and only a couple of (decent) sales. It’s very tough to sit at a show for eight hours, with little to do. At least I got to take a short nap.

Attendance improved considerably on Sunday, but not sales. The day ended with only one Sunday sale, for a total of only three sales, and a show rating of “fair” from me.

I asked around and got the following feedback from some of the dealers — “Very respectable” from a dealer in Asian items; “mediocre and disappointing” from a dealer in general merchandise and art; “worst show I ever had here” from a dealer in general antiques; “good” from a dealer in art glass and watches; and “very good” from a dealer in art glass. There was no general consensus for the show, just the expected range from good to bad.

Are you coming to the Baltimore Summer Antiques Fair, August 22-25, 2013? Maybe two free tickets will convince you. Click here for two free tickets to the show.

I’m in the process of having my website totally redesigned, with many changes and improvements. It’s coming in the next few weeks. Can’t wait to show you and get your reaction!

The summer antique show season is about to begin

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday.

The summer antiques shows are almost upon us, with Denver first. We gave up on Denver a few years ago, but were convinced to try it again, since the show is under new management. Hopefully it will be better this time around, so we can look forward to returning the following year. The show will be held at the Denver Mart, beginning on Friday, July 19 at 10 AM and ending on Sunday, July 21, at 5 PM. Please visit us in booth 107 and take a look at our spectacular new purchases, accumulated from around the world.

The following week, we will exhibit locally in the New York area, at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany, NJ. It’s a short, weekend show, July 27-28. The quality is very good for a small show. Some years it’s gone very well and others not. We’ll see what’s in store for us this year.

August’s shows have a better track record. First we’ll be in Rosemont, IL, for the Chicago Summer Antiques Show at the Rosemont Convention Center, August 16-18. It’s a small, but good quality show. We always look forward to Chicago, as we have many good friends and clients in the area. We’ll no longer exhibit at Arlington Racetrack, if there is another show there (and that’s in doubt). That increases the importance of our other shows in the greater Chicago area.

The last show of the summer is also the best. The Baltimore Summer Antiques Show has been slowly evolving, first under the stewardship of the former promoter, Frank Farbenbloom, and now under the ownership of the Palm Beach Show Group. Every year, incrementally, the show has gotten better, with higher quality exhibitors, increased attendance, and stronger sales. In my opinion, it’s now one of the two best antiques shows of the year, competing only with the Original Miami Beach Antiques Show in January. Make your travel plans now and join buyers who drive and fly in from all over the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. Then stop by my booth to say hi.

The Birchwood Manor Antiques Show was held this past weekend, January 5-6, 2013. Attendance was fairly good on Saturday, but only light to moderate on Sunday. After a good turnout on Saturday, I was fairly confident of another one on Sunday, but that goes to show you what I know. Don’t understand it, because the weather was perfect.

My results were poor, breaking even at best. Ugh! Three days of hard work for what? It’s difficult to justify returning to any show in New Jersey, but I may try Birchwood Manor one more time this summer. We stopped doing shows in Southern California in the summer because of poor results, so that leaves a hole in our schedule. If next summer’s Birchwood Manor show fits into the schedule, we’ll give it one more shot. If it goes poorly, goodbye New Jersey.

And that would be a shame, as local shows are easy. Lower travel expenses and a smaller time commitment make good business sense. Fine show promoters, like Allison Kohler of JMK Shows, pave the way for a smooth setup and show. So it’s up to you, New Jersey buyers. If you want to see shows like the Birchwood Manor Antiques Show continue and flourish, visit the show and consider making a purchase. Compliments are appreciated, but they won’t pay the bills.

miami-national-2013

The important Miami shows are coming up shortly. First up is the Miami National Antiques Show (The Airport Show) at the Miami Airport Convention Center, January 25-27, 2013. Immediately following will be the eagerly anticipated Original Miami Beach Antiques Show, January 31 – February 4, 2013. That’s the big one that gets clients flying in from all over the world. The smart ones arrive a few days early to shop at the Airport Show. Don’t miss these shows. You can enjoy warm, beautiful Miami, in the middle of a cold northern winter and see the best antique shows in the country at the same time.

I will be posting videos on YouTube of my lecture on French Cameo Glass to the Metropolitan Glass Club. I need some time to edit the videos. When they’re ready, I’ll put the link on my website and here in my blog.

My goal is to publish new posts twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays. However, if you don’t see a new post on Thursday, it’s because I was too busy, so please look for a new one the following Monday. There will not be a Thursday post this week because I’ll be traveling to Europe on a quick buying trip. I hope to return with a few choice items, which I’ll display at my upcoming Florida shows.

Saturday afternoon at the show

The Birchwood Manor Antiques Show was held in Whippany, NJ, this past weekend, January 7-8, 2012. The show was shortened from a three-day show to a two-day show, based on my suggestion last year to the show promoter, Allison Kohler. Two-day shows have worked great for Stella’s Pier Show in Manhattan, so why not for Birchwood Manor in New Jersey? Here’s the way I see it. When a show is only two days long, more people attend per day. That makes for more energy — like critical mass in a nuclear reaction. Another big plus is that the time commitment for dealers (and the promoter and the rest of the staff) is one day shorter, and that’s a big deal. Everyone wins — the public gets to see the same show; the promoter sells the same number of tickets to the public; the dealers sell the same (or more) with one fewer day. How can you beat that?

So now that you know the theory, how did it work in practice? Very well, thank you. Attendance was fairly good both days, although a little slower on Sunday, perhaps because of the Giants playoff game. (Go Giants!) Because the show was more crowded, there was more interest, more questions, and thank goodness, more business.

I spoke to quite a few dealers. Most said they had good shows or at least passable. One dealer said she had a better show than she did in Miami Beach last year (wow!) — and that’s with only 14 total hours of selling. I’d say that was a successful show. The show is smaller than it used to be, so I think some of the dealers who dropped out should reconsider and exhibit again. Personally my show went well, with the most interest in French glass, Tiffany lamps and bronze, Fulper pottery and French bronze.

We’re looking forward to our Florida show circuit, which starts with the Palm Beach Winter Antiques Show at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in West Palm Beach on January 20th. You’ve got to admit that antique dealers are not stupid — all of the action moves to Florida in the middle of the winter. By the time we get back to New York, the winter will almost be over. In the meantime, I suggest you make your plans to visit some of the Florida shows. They’re filled with the best dealers and a fabulous array of merchandise that you won’t find anyplace else.
